What film did you watch last night?

Free Guy - 8/10
Leans very heavily on The Truman Show as noted in other comments (one scene being largely a copy of one from Truman), with a smattering of Groundhog Day and even The Matrix to a certain degree with some of the action scenes and the concept.

Jodie Comer sparkles.

I really enjoyed Doctor Sleep, Mike Flanagan did a really good job with it, it's a bit jarring with some of the character replacements for Nicholson and Duvall. That's my only real issue with the movie. Ah, i'll just quote my own comments from last year :D

I have to admit that I'm not a fan of The Shining either. I prefer the tv series which apparently Stephen King preferred too. It followed the book a lot more closely and I found it a lot more creepy than the film.

I keep hoping Dr. Sleep will be shown on TV shown but I'll definitely keep an open mind.

Although 3 hours long??!!

The Cobra Snake eyes thing... Everyone involved in this shouldn't be allowed to work in film again.
What a brilliantly funny but equally brutal critique jammed into a nice one liner.

While this sort of film nonsense is often my cup of tea I think I will give it a miss due to how utterly scathing your review is. This is now the benchmark with which I will measure all other reviews henceforth.
I thank you sir for brightening my evening. :)

Independence day

I can't believe that I have never watched this before!

Absolutely loved every minute of it despite the visuals looking a bit tired and dated.

A proper adrenaline fuelled Sci fi family thriller with lots of laugh out loud moments.

Easy 9/10

Independence day (2nd one)

What a load of utter rubbish.

It just wasn't a patch on the first one and I have deleted it with disgust and disappointment.

3/10

Slowly working my way through the six Peter Jackson Middle-earth films.

Finished The Hobbit 9/10 and now on to the multitude of behind the scenes stuff that was included. It's truly fascinating just what goes on!

Birds of Prey

I didn't have particularly high hopes for this one after watching Suicide Squad but it's a completely different kind of movie and altogether better. Quirky and funny, stylish and slick, it manages to make Harley Quinn a sympathetic protagonist whilst never asking us to overlook her massive flaws. The story is fun, told at a decent clip without the bloated runtime of so many modern films, and coherent enough for a story in the Batman universe.

A fun watch 8/10.

Barely notice it's 3 hours, sign of a well paced/written movie.
Definitely a good sign!!

Pyewacket.

This psychological horror was a bit slow to start off with and full of typical clichés.

But once she had summoned this demon to get back at her mother, it improved massively.

The demon was brilliant and fantastically done. Perhaps one of the best I have ever seen. Maybe because of the clever effects they used. The way it appeared like mist and then slowly crawled into her bed was so cool.

Most films like these have poor endings because they have no idea how to wrap them up but this films ending does not disappoint.

7.5/10

I would have enjoyed it more if not for the obvious 'all men are bed, don't forget all men are bed, btw, see this guy who doesn't seem bad, is really bad' message that was rammed down our throats from the start.

Also, why does she hate knees so much, I did wince a lot.

The Black Hole (1979) 2/10

Always enjoyed watching this at Christmas years ago, decided to watch last night once more, having re-engaged Disney+ in readiness for the next Walking Dead series
Sorry to say it hasn't aged well at all! The script is laboured and cliched, the acting is camp and awful. The sets look like Doctor Who+ and the costumes are off the reservation, Ernest Borgnine's tweed jacket and trousers on a deep space mission for goodness sake. The end sequence made no sense at all, on reflection.
How did Reinhart both survive in the vacuum of space then end up inside Maximillian The Robot? The whole Hell followed by Heaven sequence seemed a cheap religious parallel then the movie ends with the probe ship in an unknown star system, no idea how the crew survive or get back to Earth; for that matter do we care!

This was (supposedly) Disney's challenge to Star Wars, but Lucas left them in the dust in just about every area. Will be a while before watching again.

I read the book as a kid and vaguely recall that they go through the Black Hole and everyone merges with everyone else briefly while travelling then they emerge on the other side separated and the book ends. There was supposed to be Beyond the Black Hole but I think this bombed.

Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins (2021) - 6/10

A good old fashioned action movie that takes itself far too seriously and doesn’t seem to have much to do with G.I. Joe.

The story isn’t complex and is lacking in scale, but it has lots of Japanese culture and style and plenty of fast paced and exciting action scenes.

The acting and characters are ok, although some characters are brought in for little to no reason, and it lacks that spark that makes a good movie great.

For what it was, I enjoyed it.

I never realised there was a book, I’ll need to track it down. Anyhoo on reflection amend my score to 5/10, not least because two days later John Barry’s excellent music is still going round inside my head and still being hummed, much to the annoyance of my missus.

Thinking about it, it might have been more of an Album or comic book of some sort. Shame I don't still have it. It might be worth something!
