What film did you watch last night?

Ha! Interesting opposing views! As a Kingman movie, it wasn't the best. But the later set movies are goofy and rely on technology, The Kings Man took us back to the gritty origins of how the agency was formed - no gadgets etc, just proper cloak and dagger. So as a standalone movie 7/10, as a Kingsmen movie, then yes, less.

It was clever however, how they tied real historic events/characters into the story ie Rasputin and poisoned cake, UK Royalty are German etc.

Now..............
why did they feel the need to kill off Conrad? Were they forced to do this as his death was referenced in the movies? It hurt on 2 counts, 1. Dad promised his wife to keep him out of war - failed. 2. He was a good character and it would have been good to see him in the next movie taking on an agent role, building the Kingsman shop etc. We built him up so much and in a fleeting second - gone :(

I know it could be said that his death drove Ralph to create the Kingsmen, but there was already enough evidence for this to happen without the death being needed.
It's referenced in the first one that Kingsman was set up by nobles who had lost their sons to the war and had wished to prevent such atrocitites happening again

And yes, Rhys Ifans is great in it, didn't realise it was him either.

Just got back from seeing death on the Nile. Was a big fan of murder on the orient express, so had high hopes for this and it certainly delivered. Hope there's another in the making.

Resident Evil - Welcome to Racoon City - 4/10.
Paid £25 for the 4K disc but might as well have saved £10 and made do with the Blu-ray. Entire story took place at night, appalling lighting even the indoor scenes hard to see what was going on.

Some retconning with a half hearted attempt to tell the backstory of Chris and Claire Redfield, plus Wesker and Leon. The story which was supposed to parallel the events taking place underground in The Hive during the first movie never really gelled and it would have been nice if they could have given "Alice" at least a cameo at some point during the movie, to cement the link.

With hindsight should probably have saved £20 and rented it on iTunes.

Pleased I saw this for free. Just a bad forgettable film. They have been cashing in on the first one for far too long.

Batman 1989.

Watched a few times as a kid. Jack Nicholson is the star of the show, while Keaton is far from it. Basinger hot as ever.

The stages are so fake sometimes it's comedy. Still overall it hasn't aged too badly. Good fun. 7/10

Uncharted (2022) - 7/10

An enjoyable adventure with plenty of action, adventure and acrobatic hijinks.

The story’s predictable and with a good balance of modern day and historical locations, although the villains aren’t particularly interesting and the constant one liners between the leads aren’t particularly funny.

Overall things are kept light and with good pacing which makes for good, if not particularly memorable, entertainment.

Pintu Terlarang.

Joko Anwar explores the darker aspects of Indonesian society in this slow burning retro styled psychological neo-noir thriller.

Gambir, a gifted sculptor, wins fame and fortune with his realistic statues of pregnant women. Over time, however, he becomes disillusioned and even concerned by the monotony of his work. Yet his ambitious wife and manager compel him to go on, and its not long before cracks appear in their relationship.

At the same time, Gambir is haunted by strange experiences that seem to hint at a lurking danger. Combined with the guilt of his hidden past, this mysterious threat weighs heavily on his fragile mental state, leading to a catastrophic event that will change everything he knew!

While there's no denying the bold ambition of Anwar's work, Pintu Terlarang fails to satisfy. It is oddly directed, with unusual cuts that only distract from scenes that would otherwise be impactful. This is made worse by an unnecessary number of twists and turns in the plot, which inspire more irritation than intrigue.

Thematically, Pintu Terlarang is all over the place. Anwar has scooped up a bunch of social issues, thrown them at the wall with no particular enthusiasm, and waited to see what sticks. The result is as messy as you'd expect. When the big reveal finally occurs, there's not much reason to be excited about it.

I rate Pintu Terlarang at 16.65 on the Haglee Scale, which works out as a lacklustre 5/10 on IMDB.

Meet the Parents (6.5/10)

Neither of us had seen it in yeeeeeeeears but it popped up on Plex and thought "why not?". We laughed at the ridiculous nature of the story and the epic bad luck of Gaylord Focker, more than we expected to. Genuine laugh at the final scene where Stiller is talking-trash to the nanny cam and the water polo scene.

It flew by, which for a near 2hr film made in 2000 is astounding. I've got no appetite to watch the sequels though :p

Stan & Ollie
Not watched since it came out in 2018, really touching film without being too smalzy. 9.5/10.
.... then in a similar vein?
Judy
Like S&O, superb acting, sad that Judy Garland died at 47, which i had forgotten 9/10

Was talking about watching this the other day as we've not seen it since pretty much release.

Irreversible. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0290673/

I think I may have seen a little of it before but I noticed Irreversible mentioned a couple of pages back,
so I thought I'd give it another try. As the other poster said, it is, at times, very violent and quite shocking
but the trippy, surreal nature of the cinematography was a bit hard going for me at times.

I didn't manage to make it all the way through but it might be worth checking out for some.

The Kingsman

3rd in the trilogy? Ww1 prequel...
Lacks almost everything that made the 1st one great and the second one average.
Easily the worst of the 3 and 2 was meh.

Some ok cliché scenes you come to expect from the formula, now established but overall.
7/10

A weird choice they took half way through ruined it for me, it was meant to be super edgy but I just laughed. It might tie into a previous film but honestly its been so long since I've seen both all the references fell flat on me.

Was really expecting a certain timelord to be in it ..... :P
