What film did you watch last night?

No Way Home Extended Edition - 9/10

Got to admit I was curious how this would stand up to a second viewing. Was it all hype with the various cameos and big names? Honestly enjoyed it just as much the second time through. it's a great comic book film with some really good performances and fantastic scenes. The extended ones didn't add anything crazy, just nice little extras.

Everything Everywhere All At Once - loads of fun! It took a bit to get going but once it did it lived up to its title!

I read they they (writers and directors of the excellent Swiss Army Man) have been trying to get it made for years. It's a shame as the whole multiverse thing is everywhere at the moment it diluted this film a bit.

Anyway, well worth a watch. 4/5 Maybe a five as it deserves a bonus point for two of my favourite 80's actors!

Really couldn't get on with this. Just a frantic mess I thought. Gave up after half hour. Maybe didn't give it long enough, I don't know. A lot of people seem to like it.

Mad God : 6/10

Not sure what I just watched there tbh!

A surreal, grotesque nightmare vision from the director, mainly done with stop motion animation but interspersed with a few live actors.

If Tim Burton and Ed Wood had a lovechild, this is the sort of movie they would make.

The King's Man

What an odd film. Tone was all over the place. The fight scenes were boring and too long. Script was dire.

4/10

Shame, as I enjoyed the other films in the series.

High Plains Drifter (1973) - 6/10

A gritty revenge thriller which doesn’t seem that special until the ending when everything suddenly makes a lot more sense, and what a superb twist it is.

Lots of ponderous views, some comical moments and some action within the limited plot, but not a lot else.

The anti-hero’s bullying antics and animal magnetism make him as villainous and unlikeable as everyone else and apart from the weirdness of ‘painting the town red’, nothing really stood out.

Hellraiser (1987)

I remember the iconic front cover from the video rental shop as a kid, but never got round to watching it until now.

Good horror film with a supernatural element. I'm not a big horror watcher but it felt much less generic than the ones I have seen. This plus Candyman were a couple of Clive Barker adaptions done well with the creepy world building and orchestral music.

7/10

Thoroughly recommend Pale Rider (1985) which I think is the better film. :)

As it's coming up to Halloween, last night re-watched The Woman in Black (BBC adaption) originally aired Christmas Eve 1989. 10/10. A perfect ghost story with some genuine moments.

The spooky story on Christmas Eve is the only bit of Xmas TV I genuinely look forward to each year, last year it was Mark Gatiss' Mezzotint which was an awesome adaption of the MR James story.

P.S. BBC iPlayer has got some decent classic horror films listed.

Barbarian

This might be the worst horror movie I've seen all year. Even more overrated than Hereditary. Someone must be astroturfing these reviews.

I thought Smile was a fine, albeit generic slasher. 7/10. This pushes it to a 10/10. Starts off decent. Follows the 90-minute horror movie script to a tee. You know what's a fakeout, and how long till the actual monster shows up. There's some MeToo commentary. But apart from that, you have a generic horror girl bimbo making the same old mistakes. She even has her Get Out/Nope moment, but goes inside anyway. But she's a genius in comparison to the person who follows. They're supposed to be a dumb character, but horror movies take off an extra 30 IQ

The monster and its explanation are lame. And it turns into a comedy halfway through. The ending couldn't be dumber. It's a shame this director, who hasn't made a decent film in his life, is going to get more work off this. I can see him directing a Marvel film in a couple years. The violence is actually tame. If you've seen S1-4 of GoT, you've seen way better kills.

I watched this off the back of reviews and thought the same. Absolute garbage.

Honest Thief
easy watching action film. you know what you get with Liam Neeson and (for me) it didn't dissapoint. 7.5 / 10. quite a decent cast in it as well

(can't say I approved of his life choices after he met his girlfriend however........ I won't say more due to spoilers but I would not have gone that way)
