What film did you watch last night?

Killers of the Flower Moon.

I mean this is a Scorsese and he a great director but this was terrible. I turned it off after 45mins. Something about it just didn't work for me and I was very bored.

It may not have helped that De Niro was in it, who frankly I think has been off the boil for years, and I'm sick of his grumpy face.

I'm probably also overloaded with Dicaprio in everything and a lot of things set in the past, and he was miscast in this. He's 50odd years old and he's playing a young man back from war? What?

Solid mmmmmh/10 for me, which I know is harsh since I didn't see most of it, but if you can't grab me in nearly and hour, then what's the point in watching the rest.

Chicken Run (2): Rise of the Nugget

This contains too much eye-rolling 'family friendly' material to be anything other than 'passable' for most adults. The driving force of the plot is overplayed 'parent / child' relationship which is just boring. There are some overly twee characters that don't act like adults (such as the 'scientist') and even Rocky the Rooster seems void of personality this time too.

Damagingly, it has jokes like... well, are they even jokes?

*popcorn falls from the sky*
"Ah - popcorn falling from the sky? That's British weather, unpredictable!"

What... I mean, what is that?! Who thought that was funny, or even interesting?

As a saving grace, the systematic brainwashing and food processing of the chickens is pretty darn dark / creepy! But it can't save the film.

5/10

Matrix - 9/10

Decided to watch the originals again. Such a great film, the start is just perfect. I'm not keen on the whole 'you can't die because I love you' that was just dumb, but thankfully the very end of the film is great.
10/10 I'd say, it was the first of its kind with all those camera effects etc. Once in a generation film.

I don't give 10/10 lightly either.

Hmm, I’m not sure if you’ve slightly misunderstood something based on how you wrote that. Possibly not, but:

It wasn’t the case that he was literally saved by the fact she loved him.

It was more that the prophecy told to her by the Oracle was that she would fall in love with a man and that he would be the one:

Neo, I'm not afraid anymore. The Oracle told me that I would fall in love and that that man... the man that I loved would be The One. So you see, you can't be dead. You can't be... because I love you. You hear me? I love you.

Therefore despite all the terror of the situation she realised in that moment that he must be the one.

It wasn’t love that saved him. Rather Trinity’s feelings simply revealed his true identity to her.

Put another way, he presumably would have come back to life even if she had said nothing.

Or alternatively, Neo hearing that Trinity’s prophecy did confirm he was the one awakened what he was refusing to believe about himself… but again, it’s not ‘the love’ that saved him. Directly, anyway :p

It’s open to interpretation I suppose - I may be wrong :)

Oh I get it, it just feels like a lazy get out to me. Compared to the rest of the film it stands out like a sore thumb. I think if it had instead being Neo realising his power over the matrix and spitting out the bullet (kind of similar to how he saves Trinity in Reloaded) that would have been better imo.

There are other scenes that stand out too. Like when Trinity who has been shown throughout the film to be a smart, resourceful survivor just stops next to a ringing phone to have a conversation that could clearly wait until they're back in the real leading to Neo being caught by Smith and the subway fight happening. That felt out of character and cheap too.

It's a great film but I think it falls short of 10/10 territory for me.

Surprised me how well the effects have stood up though, I'm sure Reloaded will have aged a lot worse in that regard, the Smith fight in particular looked a bit ropey at the time.

Godzilla Minus One (2023) - 8/10

A Japanese historical WWII drama which happens to feature a giant lizard.

The plot plays out as expected but has a more traditional style, focusing on the characters as they struggle to deal with the aftermath of the war and a new threat of the giant monster.

Cultural issues such as the virtues of honor and survivors guilt are well portrayed by the varied cast of characters, but it does make it a bit slow to get going and some scenes felt labored.

Godzilla itself looks impressively menacing and the special effects and scale of destruction invokes shock and awe.

Great use of music and an emotional ending, even if it was a bit too happy.

@Shamikebab good luck for enduring Reloaded and Revelations… those were never great and they haven’t aged well in any sense. Everything that is ‘cool’ about the original seems very forced :o

Revelations is particularly painful for barely having any ‘real world matrix that we are trapped in’ in it (if any?) and an ensemble cast that’s really hard to care about.

Bill and Ted 3 - 2/10

Nonsense. Awful. Keanu Reeves acts like a malfunctioning android with a tick. His daughter in the film was pulling faces so awkward that I think she was intentionally soiling herself to mask the stench of her acting.

For me it's 10/10 because after all these years it still stands out as a great film, minor grips aside, I'm not sure any similar film, especially sci-fi/action film has come close since.

And no film has blown me away like that did the first time I watched it.

Eager for suggestions of a better film though, as most films are crap in comparison. Do you have a 10/10 that you'd recommend?

Violent Night - 6.5/10

Reasonably entertaining if you can just accept a few things.

I was a bit confused by it, was it aimed at kids or adults? It seems to be caught in between.
I have to ask, why do you think it was aimed at kids?!

Miracle on 34th Street - 6/10

A nice enough movie, just rather simple and basic. It's funny, I don't want B&W movies generally as I think about how they can't do what we can do these days, but a story doesn't rely on modern tech and the story just seemed really quite basic? It was a nice story though.

Lethal Weapon - 7/10

A classic, but a little as above, a little simple in some ways. As we know, great chemistry between Riggs and Murtah.

Some of the dialogue seemed to be from a kids film, rated 12 or something, I think I'm referring to the light-hearted nature of some of it and the belief in Santa Clause etc. The theme around how believing changes things. It's not a serious film but it sort of is at the same time, the graphic nature.

Typing that out has made me realise that I guess this is due to it trying to be a 'normal' Christmas film but with an adult twist. Makes sense now.

Shawshank Redemption is always my go to 10/10

Alien
Fellowship of the Ring

I'd have to think about it for others.

Interstellar - second time watching it, first time being many moons ago.

9/10? Great acting, good action, underlying message, thought provoking.
It is one of the best films ever made, isn't it!
I like that Anne Hathaway and Michael Caine make an appearance out of nowhere when you least expect it, what a perfect cast throughout! SO good.
