What film did you watch last night?

Rebel Moon

Ponderously slow. Almost completely lacking in original ideas. Poorly written, with shallow, unexpressed characters that its hard to care about. I realised I remember the name of just one character in the whole movie; that's how badly it puts them across. The visual design is poor, made worse by constant smears of overdone lens flare, and apart from a couple of flashes of inspiration in the "not the Mos Eisely Cantina honest would I lie to you" scene heavily derivative. Like, maybe a decade ago it'd have seemed visually impressive but not it's just a slew of things you've seen before. The fight scenes are all utter garbage, not even reaching the kind of pretty-but-dumb you expect from Snyder.

I don't have anything positive to say about it really, but it's not actually terrible, but it sort of skirts along at just that level where you think it might, maybe, rise to being something worth watching at some point but then never gets there which is almost worse. It's infuriating to see such a big budget sci-fi movie get made and then be such drekk. It's just so incredibly generic that there's not even fun to be had laughing at its stupidity as with movies like Jupiter Ascending, the other terrible big budget sci-fi movie it reminds me of.

4/10. Save yourself the hours.
Didn't it start life as a Star Wars script but Disney rejected it, so he rewrote it and now we have this.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023) - 5/10

A full-on superhero movie which puts too much in to give it any depth.

Tonally it’s all over the place but with its ample energy, passable humour and fast-paced action scenes, you can’t help but be swept along for the ride.

The acting’s ok, the story isn’t great, the villain is somewhat overshadowed by the real villain and the support characters don’t do much beyond filling their roles, but it all looks good and there are some wondrous underwater scenes filled with colour and inventive creature designs.

The Lord of the Rings, Extended Editions. 4K HDR - 9.5/10

Once upon a time I’d have said Star Wars was my favourite series of films, but now it’s easily LoTR. Looks fantastic in 4K and although the running times are ridiculously long other than a pee break I don’t think I was distracted to look at something else the entirely length of the movies, watching each movie on a separate night.

Rebel Moon - 5/10

I was expecting rubbish and I received rubbish. It just felt so disjointed, with no real story or character development to actually make you feel anything. Also the CGI was pretty bad in some parts.
There's a part two but it seemed a lot of build up to a pfff finale.
Hopefully part two is better

The Killer & Hard Boiled

I've seen both before on VHS, but I thought I would do a rewatch before treating myself to Woo's latest blastathon.

Truth be told, I've now got a headache from all the mayhem :)

Maestro (2023)

Difficult to fault really. I thought everything from the acting, to the music, the production design, cinematography were great. Even the the make up on Bradley Cooper as he aged throughout the film was faultless.

Having said that, I didn't really enjoy it all that much. Maybe because I knew nothing about Leonard Bernstein in the first place. Or because the film condenses his life story over such a short period of time that I still don't know that much more now.

A good film that's difficult to recommend, unless you're interested in the man or his music. But I still think it deserves a decent score.

7/10

Beverley Hills Cop 9/10

Bit dated and load of plot holes but I still enjoy it. Reminds me of my youth :D Seeing the youtube trailer for the new one on here made me decide to watch it. The new one though is definately gonna suck !

Leave the World Behind 3/10.

A well produced film with an interesting premise but the film makes no sense and disjointed. My daughter said it’s confusing and didn’t make much sense to her. The film presented a lot of questions and never answers any of them a lot like lost did back in the day. The ending is little abrupt after learning the what happened.
