What film did you watch last night?

Year One - 2009

Was slammed by pretty much everyone upon it's release.

Definitely needed the humour (as immature as it is) trimmed down - too many long 'haha this is funny' stretched too long but some really good jokes,

Apparently it's a bit of a 'cult classic' but I would say 6/10 - some jokes are really good. Some are really way too long and drawn out.

Civil War (2024) - 9/10

A story of 4 war journalists at different points of their careers as they cover a modern day American Civil War.

It doesn’t go into much detail of the war itself or what drives these people to seek out danger for a profession, but there’s enough in the setting and context to show both the calm and the storm during a conflict.

It also doesn’t demonize or glamorize the profession or the war, just showing the events as they unfold and lets the audience make their own mind up.

Powerful and shocking imagery, great acting performances and realistic urban battle scenes make for a tough but entertaining film, even if the ending was a bit over-sensationalised.

Red Right Hand (2024)

There's a few moments of tension from a couple of torcher scenes and ones that might make you wince a bit. Butt it's not going to win any awards for originality but a perfectly watchable film non the less.

5/10

Monkey Man - 8.5/10

Really good! Wasn't expecting this at all. Held a good pace generally but felt it little slow in the middle for a while. Yes, ultimately it's a simple a revenge story but with the backdrop of current Indian political nationalism sentiment and wealth disparity. Shot beautifully to show the different sides of India. Amazing performance from Dev Patel and what a directorial debut. (Only behind Godzilla Minus 1 as the best new film I've seen in the last year).

As for a few others seen recently at the cinema.

Blade 1 - 7/10 forgot how good but cheesy this was.

Dune 1 - 7/10

Dune 2 - 8/10 Enjoyed this more than the first. Good mix of action and politics

Godzilla x Kong : New Empire - 3/10

Interview With The Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles (1994) - 7/10

The Holdovers - 8/10 Best surprise so far this year. Excellent film and well worth a watch

Rogue One

Forgot how much of a yawn the first hour or so of this was, along with some of the stupidity in the storyline. Though the final act is reasonably good. It does make the transition to episode 4 a bit awkward though, Leia acts all innocent saying the ship was on a diplomatic mission, yet Rogue one is said to be set literally minutes before Episode 4 begins so her denials about not knowing what Vader is talking about come off as totally stupid given what happened a few minutes beforehand.

I also forgot just how distracting Felicity Jones is in this movie. She spends so much of the movie with her mouth closed tightly and once you notice it, it can't be unseen. She has slightly prominent teeth and seems to be really self conscious about it, so anytime she's done flapping her yap she goes back to having her mouth tightly closed and it looks so unnatural, you can basically see that she's making a conscious effort to do this and it gets a bit odd looking at times. Makes me wonder if it bugs her so much why not get it fixed, not as if she's skint..

The cg Tarkin was meh, and the cg Leia was comical.

anyhoo.. 6/10

Footloose (1984)

A film that probably wouldn't get made if it was pitched today, let alone make 10 times it's budget.

I don't have much nostalgia for it and thought it was a bit daft back in the day, but to my surprise my hadn't ever seen it so we gave it a watch yesterday afternoon. However, the sound track has loads of nostalgia for me and that's about the only thing that kept me watching.

I didn't realise Chris Penn was in it and he was actually very good. It's probably the only time I've seen him not overweight in a role.

4/10 for the film 7/10 for the soundtrack.

Oppenheimer

Not as good as I was hoping it would be. The political bits were a bit boring/laboured. I wasn't a massive fan of the score either.

Still pretty good though, and well acted throughout.

7.5/10

Suzume (2022) - 8/10

A quirky and heartfelt adventure full of fantastic animation and dramatic music.

From the beautiful idyllic rural scenery to the hauntingly eerie ruins, the urban metropolis and cosmic landscapes, every scene is a visual treat.

The story covers numerous themes such as modern fears, young love and moving on all with a strong human moral element, but is a bit scattershot in what it wants to say.

The setting is quite formulaic for Japanese anime with a big-eyed orphan girl with a tragic past, a mysterious handsome stranger and a metaphorical threat of epic proportions, but also has its weird comical moments thanks to the non-human companion (or 2) and well-rounded supporting cast.

Thoroughly enjoyable and relatively moving.

Amazon prime looking for a comedy
Bottoms - Really bad turned off after 10 minutes

Mordecai - This popped up and had a good cast so put it on. It was better than bottoms but was still pretty dire. We both ended up on our phones but it did play till the end at least.

American Fiction - 6.5/10.

Always enjoy Jeffrey Wright in films. It was really funny at times, but felt a little twee and ‘Sunday afternoon’ TV at others. It was pretty uneven basically. Definitely worth a watch though.

It was a random movie night and this was the selection.

It's not terrible. Not great either, but It was certainly better than I was expecting. Has a few moment that made me grin. But the fashion... Oh god I'd forgotten (or mentally blocked) how bad the 80's was.

5.5/10

Civil War - 5/10 - A road-trip movie more than an action film, the cast are good actors but don't have a lot of consistency (strong one second, falling apart another) and the young woman holds up well considering who she's acting next to but I'm a little disappointed in the Writer/Director (Garland), whose earlier work I really liked (28 days, Dredd, Ex Machina etc), over some of the writing choices he made. The story is meh TBH, in an attempt to not "pick a side" it comes across as very inoffensive and misses the mark a lot due to that, but if you want to keep both "sides" happy (and your box office full) thats the path I think you have to pick, only with such a film I wish they'd been more insightful and shown the the extremes of both sides in action.

There will be a lot of talk about "is it left/right, is it about Trump" etc and as they picked a more neutral tone, its not really about any of that. As mentioned its more of a road trip through the war following the Journalists through small towns/situations hitting small little stories (lots of cameos), then moving on after 10 minutes to the next small story then rinse/repeat, which means it seems to lack the "bigness" that a real US civil war would have all around the world (which gets virtually no mention, its all kept inside the US).

In the end it felt like the desire to not offend is this films biggest weak spot which, although this may have been done for solid financial reasons, leaves you feeling a bit "is that it" by the end. The 3rd act in Washington has some good combat scenes (mostly in the Trailer) but by that point the scale so far has been so small that this final "OMG!!!!" feels like watching the intro to a "White House Down" movie, rather than the thrilling climax to the entire US civil war.

I won't spoil the ending but people will take from the ending exactly what they want to see. It's not something I'll bother seeing again, its just OK at best TBH with nothing that stands out enough to make repeated viewing a necessity for me.
