What film did you watch last night?

Ricky Stanicky (Amazon Prime) 5 / 10
A pretty dire comedy with a few comical lines. I've discovered some improvisational stuff involving Andrew Santino and some of his absurdity amuses me and I've no idea why.

Just did two nights of movies due to the Mrs having to rest, so she was bored!

Official Secrets (2019) - It's been in my backlog for ages, just looked un appealing, but actually surprisingly good.. having GCHQ relatively on my doorstep, it's got a local connection, but it told a good story and both myself and the Mrs would rate that a 7/10.

One Life (2023) - Surprisingly moving, it certainly touched a nerve with my Mrs and another true to life story.. 8/10

Roadhouse (2024) - I liked the original, we watched that last week in anticipation, but this one is shockingly bad.. OK to watch and that is about it.. Gyllenhaal was trash IMO.. that gormless look/persona was dire and the antithesis of the original movie.. whilst Conor McGregor is not actor, the mad as a hatter domineering nutter was surprisingly entertaining for what it was.. 3/10 mainly as its hard to see a so-so original film actually be markedly worse.

Heat (1995) - A classic that was a bit more middling than when watched it back in the 90s.. good actors, slightly pushed plot and slightly dodgy acting in places, but overall much more engaging than roadhouse!

Repo Man (1984)

Black comedy that was probably more relevant when it was released than now and so doesn't have the impact it may have done. It raises a rye smile now and again, but it didn't really hold my interest throughout. Maybe if I'd seen it when it was originally released I may have had nostalgia for it, but even then it's squarely aimed at an American audience, despite it's British writer and director.

It did make me want to watch Sid & Nancy again, which I think I've only seen once on TV or maybe VHS. Which is also written and directed by Alex Cox, who I mainly remember from presenting Moviedrome.

5/10

Transformers - 9/10

Transformers - Revenge of the Fallen - 8/10

Well we all know these films. The last time I watched the first one was on my HD-DVD disc, so 1080p Stereo if I recall. The first title in glorious 4k looks amazing, fueled by a very lively 5.1 stream. This film still kicks, and powered by Shia and Megan it is still a very enjoyable romp. The OST as Bumblebee lays his hands on the All Spark is superb.

Revenge of the Fallen still rocks, but could do without the rapping autobots and that comedy relief lad who was Shia's roommate. The film feels a bit too long, especially the action packed final segment. Atmos audio is in full whack here and explosions and bullet richochets sound great.

Off to start watching Dark of the Moon now...it's only downhill from here! :D

Road House (the original).

Sure, it's cheesy as ****, but I actually watched the whole thing! The remake, not so much (around 35 mins before I switched that **** off).

Sam Elliott was cool as always, and Kelly Lynch well...yeah.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023)

Having watched all the previous DC films, you feel like you have to watch them all (I still haven't seen Wonder Woman 1984). Even if non of them have been particularly good, some of them do have their moments.

This one, however, is just a steaming pile of turd. I'd even go as far to say it's worse than The Flash.

On the positive side I do think Jason Momoa has enough charm and charisma in the film to be watchable until he has any "serious" lines or acting to do, but then he just looks and sounds daft.

On the negative side I could be here all day. The CGI was mostly garbage, most of the dialogue is laughably bad, most of the acting is poor, particularly Amber Heard. Who managed be the worst actor on screen, even in scenes with Dolph Lundgren or a 6 month old baby.

I also found myself completely distracted from a lot of the film by the just plain stupid physics, logic, science and nature. I know you have to suspend belief for superhero films, but this one just takes it too far. Like the ice caps have melted but Manhattan isn't under water.

1/10 (a point for looking good on and OLED TV)

Monkey Man (2024) - 8/10

An intense and powerful revenge thriller steeped in Indian folklore and culture.

The story has simple motivations and relatively standard characters but it was interesting to see the modern day political issues as well as the great disparity between the rich and the poor.

Superb performance from Patel and directorially with iconic scenes and even a few lighter-hearted moments amongst the blood, pain and suffering.

Although there’s a lot of fast, brutal and very violent action scenes, none are without cause but with the volume of people, colours and close camera work, it invoked a strong sense of claustrophobia as well as not being able to see what was going on at times.

The Omen 1976 9/10

Watched again and still one of the greatest horror films. It's in my top favourites along with The Exorcist, The Twilight Zone, and The Shining.

The child actor who played Damian just made this film. Also, Gregory Peck, Lee Remick, add that gravatas.

Curious whether The First Omen will be a lemon - I hope not, but with any modern remakes/takes on old horror films, they tend to become crap over the top CGI fests.
