What film did you watch last night?

Logan (2017) - 9-9.5/10

Seeing the Deadpool and Wolverine trailer made me rewatch this epic film. Probably my 4th time watching it. Peak X-Men, peak Wolverine, almost peak any sort of Marvel tbh (I would only rate 3-4 MCU films at this level or higher).
Dafne Keen (Laura/X23) almost steals the whole show tbh, but Jackman is absolutely amazing in this. I would struggle to pick between this and Days of Future Past as his best movies as Wolverine. Logan pips it just due to his interactions and relationship with Laura.

I'm happy to go into the new movie knowing it won't be as good as Logan, won't even come close imo, but we get to see him use his claws one last time.

Yeah, actually cheaper than going to see a theater show or something like that. It is the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra though to be fair, it's not a couple of blokes with didgeridoos wearing sandals. Centre of the city, everything is expensive here!

Gladiator with live orchestra was an amazing experience.

Convenience - 7/10

Really enjoyed this. Low budget British comedy about a couple of crappy robbers trying to rob a convenience store. Has a couple of famous guest stars. Got Four Lions vibes from it.

Worth a look if you're into horror movies or like something a little spooky.
Decent length for a movie of this type.

I thought the ending seemed somewhat unresolved or maybe even a little premature.
Also watched this tonight. Great suspense and atmosphere for the first 2/3's. Starr and Caplan both wonderfully unsettling (that ******* nightmare). Did lose it's way a lot towards the end though, and as you said, weirdly sudden ending.

Boy Kills World (2023) - 6/10

Very, very odd and excessively gory, I think it would have worked better as an animation.

The setting is similar to the Hunger Games with its totalitarian state, televised culling, opulent ruling class and underdog revolutionaries but it’s a bit tone deaf, swinging between quirky black humour and serious political issues.

The plot has one too many surprises and pacing issues and it doesn’t really develop its larger than life characters, although they do look quite iconic.

The fight scenes were mostly good if completely unbelievable with plenty over the top violence – one in particular was very bizarre and entertaining – but something about them, and the production as a whole, looked and felt off.

The Bricklayer (2024)

Aaron Eckhart stars in the most generic, by the numbers, run of the mill action thriller.

I can't believe anybody could be bothered to even make a film so unoriginal these days. There's simply nothing here that hasn't been done a thousand times before.

It's no surprise that it was originally a Gerard Butler film, but could've been a film for other any aging B list actor.

Unless you've never seen a film before in your life, then give this one a miss and do something more interesting for two hours, like a tax return.

Not worth scoring/10

The Clocksmith, The Blacksmith or next the dog keeper

Got round to watching Asteroid City. 7.5/10. Didn't know about the 'twist' but found it quite enjoyable. A typical Wes Anderson film. I would group Asteroid City with Royal Tenenbaums, Fantastic Mr Fox and Grand Budapest Hotels in terms of Wes Anderson films I like and definitely not in the group of The Life Aquatic, Moonrise Kingdom and The Isle Of Dogs as Wes Anderson films I just didn't get.

The Man Who Would Be King (1975)

I finally persuaded my wife to watch one of my favourite films and I can't believe she didn't like it at all.

I think it's easily one of the best films either Sean Connery or Michael Caine ever appeared in and they are just delightful to watch for the entire runtime.

9/10

In the Land of Saints and Sinners

Put this on expecting another generic Liam Neeson film but it ended up being better than expected. Great to see Jack Gleeson back to acting as he was scene stealer.

It showed some beautiful Irish countryside and would have looked better made on proper film instead of the clean digital video look. Also there was an obvious box ticking exercise on the casting which was out of place in 1970s Ireland.

7/10

An absolute classic of a film. Reminds me I need to watch it again. It's been year since I last saw it. Totally agree it is one of the best films Connery or Caine starred in.
