What film did you watch last night?

Godzilla Minus One - 6/10

I liked this film more than I should have, primarily because I am a sucker for monster films. The creature effects are great, the acting is good and yet the plot is not so. It feels like a missed opportunity. By the time Godzilla came ashore, I felt even he had fallen foul to the bad plot. For all the great effects, it often felt like he was just plodding home after a hard days work and these pesky ant like creatures with their tiny buildings were just getting in his way.

If you like creature features, it's worth a watch otherwise, no.

Uncharted - 6/10

It's incredibly derivative, has some silly errors and plot missteps and is basically just an Aldi Indiana Jones (but then so are the games pretty much) I still kind of enjoyed it though, I love adventure films and Holland is a great lead imo. Wahlberg was less good but the two women were both good.

Monkey Man - 7/10

Quite enjoyable if you don't ask too many questions.
Dev Patel suddenly turning into prime John Wick without any real explanation in the plot was a bit of strange one
Like this for example, or about his apparent new best friend at work. But some fun fight scenes and a simple enough revenge plot. A few subtitles, but not many.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (2024) - 8/10

A solid and enjoyable epic with a good plot, great acting and excellent CGI.

The action scenes were frequent, looked good and worked well within the story which was interesting and balanced the exposition, wonder and the little things.

The ‘Kingdom’ didn’t really come into it and the ending sequences stretched their credibility, but the poignancy hit hard and it sets the series up nicely for a continuation.

Reign of Fire (2002)

Mathew McConaughy feels miscast and Christian Bale borders on overacting at times to deliver some pretty poor dialogue.

Overall it's one of those films that you're no better for watching or not watching. If you haven't seen it then don't bother and if you have seen it, you'll have no desire to watch it again.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (2024)

A bit disappointing for me. I think it's the weakest of the four films, too slow to get going and a bit light on action.

Looks like they have plans for this to be the first in a new storyline and maybe a second (5th/11th?) film will have more humans vs apes.

From a technnical point of view it's mind blowingly good and every single thing just looks real.

My wife was also disappointed and she's a far bigger Planet of the Apes fan than I am.

Rolling Thunder (1977) 7/10

Never heard of this film, dropped into my recommended watchlist on Amazon.

When I first started to watch I envisioned it to be a David Carradine style film akin to Death Race 2000. I was surprised and think it's decent! I didn't read any blurb or spoilers but later learned its one of Quentin Tarantino's favourite films. Makes sense as you can see it probably inspired some of his movies.

Stars William Devane, one of those recognisable actors of my childhood and yet I can never remember what he starred in! Tommy Lee Jones also stars.

Surprised it has not been remade.

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare - 5/10

I can see why this went straight to streaming. It’s one of the poorer Ritchie efforts. It’s devoid of tension, peril or any real humour for that matter. Alright if you’re stuck for something to watch, I guess. Disappointing.

Four weddings and a funeral. Seen it countless times, still makes me laugh. I am a fan of Richard Curtis films though.

Land of Bad (2024)

Fairly bog standard "soldier stranded behind enemy lines" but still worth a watch. There's some creative camera work and all of the soldiering side of the film feels very authentic and realistic.

I really wanted to like this film over the years but just couldn't get into it. I thought the premise of the film was brilliant especially with that great intro but the acting and script really let it down.

I thought that when the boys eyes got covered in the "dragons saliva" near the beginning and his eyes changed, that would have some significance later in the film.

Mother of the bride.

I don't know what's worse - that there are people out there with such limited mental capacity that they find this enjoyable, or that the likes of Brooke Shields actually puts her name to this.

Not just a crap film, but so poor that if I paid for it I'd not even ask for a refund but rather break the disc in half to ensure no other person has to endure this load of absolute tosh. I'm actually offended by the fact that the creators of this drivel have the gall to charge for it.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire - 5/10

Just, not very good, IMO. I didn't really have any 'buy-in', some of it didn't really make much sense, too much just 'this is how it is'.

Seconded, it was a bit crap.

Monkey Man - an absolute mess, 5/10.

Confess, Fletch - genuinely surprised by this one, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Witty, funny, not overdone. 7/10.
