What film did you watch last night?

I think you're doing it a disservice. Horrors are probably the most opinionated genre, but I think this is good. There are not many horrors that I like, but I thought this was well-directed, and the lead was brilliant, in my opinion. Yeah, the story and plot are silly, but you need that quirkiness in horrors nowadays, as it's all been done before.

Not for me.

It wasn’t a patch on the first one which I liked.

Juror #2 (2024)

My wife and I are quite partial to a courtroom drama and both enjoyed this one. It might lack a bit of tension and drama in the middle. Or at least my interest wained a little then, but it's a well made and well acted film.

I was quite surprised to see Keifer Sutherland and JK Simmons take relatively small roles. I assume they wanted to work with Clint Eastwood while they still had the chance.

7/10
Just watched this tonight. Probably the first Clint film since Gran Torino, from his most recent batch, that I've watched. Decent.

Hot Shots (1991)
7/10
A really very funny spoof of Top Gun.

Atlantic Convoy (2023)
8/10
A Norwegian subtitled story about an Atlantic Convoy trying to supply the Soviet Union in 1942. Very gritty. Loved it.

Rules of Engagement (2000)

Samuel L Jackson's hair piece was more convincing than him playing a battle hardened US Marine. He really was totally miscast in my opinion. Tommy Lee Jones just played his normal crabby self and Guy Pearce was borderline over acting.

The film itself was trying too hard to be A Few Good Men and failed quite miserably really. The combat sequences were ok, if a little bit to gratuitously violent at times.

To top it all, it makes out like it was based on a true story at the end, when it wasn't at all.

It's a good job William Friedkin made a shed load of money from The Exorcist and The French Connection. Because if he'd made this early in his career, it probably would've ended it with this turd.

Moana 2 (2024) - 7/10

A traditional Disney animated adventure which strays a bit too far from what made the original special.

It was a lot more magical than spiritual with over the top montage sequences and death defying stunts but the songs were good and the animation was great.

The story was as expected with a good if overtly happy ending but the villain lacked personality and the mid-act villain, whilst entertaining, didn’t get any closure and felt a bit pointless.

It was enjoyable and entertaining throughout with plenty of light hearted humor from the varied cast, even if it was a bit too childish at times.

Conclave (2024) - 7/10

A Vatican political drama which had plenty of scheming and secrets but could have done with more bite.

The story balanced the proceedings, the characters and their ideas well but apart from the odd scene and the twist in the finale, little was sensational or thrilling.

The acting was great, the imagery striking and the music really added to the atmosphere, but I wasn’t really that invested in the outcome, even though it was interesting to watch.

I'm surprised that I'm not see many mentions of Paddington 3 (in Peru) here. Yes it wasn't as good as P1 or P2 but I thought it would have still done well.

Glad Moana 2 is getting a few mentions. That will probably be my next film.

On-topic, I saw Kung Fury last night. It was crowd-funded but is now available on YouTube. It's a light hearted Micky-take on 80s action genre and 80s references e.g. arcades, early computers and robots. The main character uses an improvised time machine to hop through different time periods, climaxing in Nazi Germany. An 8 out of 10 from me. A Kung Fury 2 is meant to be out soon and it's going to star Arnie :D

We saw this. Slow start and a slow burn for sure. But the intrigue gathered and it kept your attention. Good performances from a great cast too. The ending though, hmmmm

Oldboy - 8/10.

The Korean original, not whatever the hell that American one was.

Great film, loses a little of its edge with knowing the ending from having seen it at release years before. But pretty brutal and the ending always makes me wonder whether the hypnosis actually failed and he remembers… but that’s the sign of a great ending.

The 4K Blu-ray looked great, the source material is a little ropey in places but the HDR really works wonders with the colours.

Stardust (2007)

Didn't know anything about it going in and this my wife's pick for yesterday afternoon.

Reminded me of a cross between The Princess Bride and Harry Potter, with a touch of Pan. Like Harry Potter it's full of mostly British actors and the humour is definitely British.

For me it was a touch slow in places and I would've preferred more humour or action. I also would've liked to have seen more of the ghost brothers. As they were more interesting than the two leads, who were a bit dull for me.

Robert De Niro was particularly unconvincing when his character showed his camp side and was probably only in it to boost its box office appeal. But most of the rest of the cast were great and the film definitely has a likeable charm.

Twisters

Poor film. Actors felt B league to me and the action was mostly fancy camera shots of off-road vehicles driving along.
