What film did you watch last night?

The Electric State.
Cliché story, but I was just fascinated by the robots, which were just brilliantly designed and executed. This is one of those very rare movies that does stand up on it's special effects. Well, for me anyway, but I can understand why it wouldn't for other people. 7/10.

Black Bag - Spy drama starring Fassbender and Cate Blanchett as a married couple who both work for the Secret Service. Fassbender is then asked to spy on his own wife who is suspected of being a double agent. 7/10.

Watched this last night and i was going into it judging from what i saw on the trailers. It didnt look spectacular but had me intrigued. The cast was somewhat simplistic and tone of the movie didnt look too grand. How I was wrong, it opened up to be a pretty nifty story with lots of intricacies and complex character interactions which had me guessing as the plot unfolded. Superb, was so surprised how it all played out. Definitely much better than i expected. 7.5/10 for me. Good recommendation for those that like Spy Thrillers.

I don't really like spy movies generally but this one was different to the usual stuff which is why I liked it.

This has been savaged by the critics. 16% on Rotten Tomatoes.

In The Lost Lands (2025) - 4/10

A post-apocalyptic fantasy western action movie with good entertainment value.

The action scenes are blurry, the acting is mostly wooden and the plot manages to be too simple and too convoluted at the same time, but as pure entertainment it’s good enough with flashy visuals, memorable leads and a passable plot.

The relationship between the leads doesn’t really work and the mix of ideas is jarring, but the understated drama and effort put into the visual style keeps it engaging.

Just got back from the 12.30 showing of this, what a pile of cack, good job I'm unlimited card holder, can't imagine it'll take much as there was only me and 2 other couples in there.

Poor man's attempt at a cross over between Mad Max and Resident Evil that fell well short 2\10

In The Lost Lands (at the Cinema)

A ‘witch’ in a post-apocalyptic world goes on an adventure.

Contrary to some of the posts above I quite enjoyed this.

It’s a Paul Anderson film starring Milla Jocavich: a fast paced, no-nonsense, bish-bash-bosh action fest. Stylistically it borrows from Mad Max and 300, adding a splash of cowboy westerns.

It succeeded in my book for avoiding the ‘modern movie trap’ of having layers of lore and explanation. Instead, the characters are introduced and off they go. What you get is almost a ‘mini-anthology’ of 5-10 minute events tied in with a larger story. It’s enjoyably lean and asks nothing of the audience.

If you pine for the days of something ‘easy to watch’ at the cinema or for anything ‘wham bam’, this ought to do nicely. Perhaps some will scoff that it’s a relic that belongs in the early 2000s, but I prefer to think of it as a time capsule.

7/10

Having sat through far too many bad Resident Evil movies, that nepotism pairing alone would be enough to put me off.

Yes if you don’t like those then stay well away…!

From my perspective: I do like decent food, but sometimes what hits the spot the best - every now and then - is a good ol’ no-nonsense cheeseburger :)

And even then I feel that’s doing the film a disservice - stylistically and aesthetically, it was really quite good IMO. But that won’t save it for anyone that has a distaste for the ‘substance’ of those sorts of films.

The 4:30 Movie - 6/10

A Kevin Smith movie - "A group of teens in the 1980s spend the day theater-hopping."

Yeah, that pretty much sums it up.

Pulp Fiction.
Hadn't watched it for years but remembered the iconic moments: diner dance, gimp dungeon etc.
Some classic moments but I felt it dragged on a bit.
7/10, maybe 7.5/10 because of Samuel L Jackson.

High Tension / Switchblade Romance - 8/10

Such a grimy, nasty horror film… and one of my favourite ones! Even with the bonkers ‘twist’. One of my favourite film soundtracks too, barring the slightly jarring Muse part. Watched the Second Sight 4K release and it looked great. A notable improvement on the Blu-Ray :)

The Electric State - 5/10

I'm a huge fan of Simon Stålenhag's artwork and this film really does nail it - it's a 9/10 in that respect.

But the rest of the film is just average.

Just finished The Electric State and thought it was pretty decent.
There isn't much new that hasn't been done before in the story but its not bad by any means and as others have said the visuals and world building are good.

6/10
