Honestly, the game i remeber making me think WOW!! got to play that over and over was a old arcade game called

TEMPEST...

It was amazing, colours, sound, 3D, fast, hard, simple... Better than SCRAMBLE even...

PC games, thats a different ball game. ELITE has to be the one that made me sit up and want to play it, along with REVS as it was the 1st racing game i had seen where 5 people could play at the same time, on a BBCb of all things.... lovely.

Remember going into a pub, saw a crowd gathered in the middle, pushed my way through and wow!

Arcade Pong in all its graphical glory!!

Awesome, just awesome, nothing like it had been seen before, the birth of gaming.

In the pub,I would say for me it would be space invaders in B/W and missile command.

total annihilation commander pack (TA, BT and CC) which i got for my birthday (twelve or eleven not sure) back on my Pentium II with 32!!!Mb RAM and S3 graphics, and wait for it, and ENORMOUS 2.1Gb hard disk :p but no game has left as lasting an impression on me than that, IMO its the best game ever available for PC, many years of enjoyment with that until my PC ate the disk :(

I had the Commander pack too, Total awesomeness!
I played that game to pieces, I think I even have 2 copies of it :)

i remember the first time i 'discovered' the krogoth! sent three of them against a huge arm base, one shot the commander i though 'oh well they're all dead' and they emerged missing like one tenth their health! it was the first game i played with all theatres of war, stategic like nukes and artillery, ships and submarines, planes, it has everything!

Another wow moment for me was first playing Freespace 2. When you're in that nebula which totally obscures your vision and suddenly there are these absolutely huge capital ships appearing and opening fire on each other, while there you are piloting what suddenly feels like a miniscule little thing. It was just unbelievably awesome! Epic music, epic dogfights, great storyline...I think I'm going to reinstall it right now actually. :o

I got Freespace 2 from GOG but i can't change the resolution and i want to play it as high a res. as possible :(

I'm reinstalling the game but I also wanted to try the Freespace Open Installer that I'd heard about some time ago. It seemingly updates an awful lot of the game so perhaps higher resolutions are one of the additions, it's worth a try anyway. Here's the page for more info: http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Main_Page

So i just download that program and install it? That would then give me the source/updated game engine?

Maybe Final Fantasy VII on the PS1 and Max Payne on the PC.

The storylines on both games were fantastic, cut scenes in FFVII were great with the gfx being pretty amazing for the time.
The idea of Max Payne was very nice with the use of bullet time etc, loved it.

That's what I'm doing anyway! They do give you a walkthrough which makes it all reasonably simple: http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/FreeSpace_Open_Installer

I've since run the installer and it's chugging away downloading texturepacks and other niceties. This gives me hope that I'll be able to run it at 1440x900:

On the "Video" tab, you can choose which API to use (OpenGL or Direct3D), what resolution to run in, and whether to use anti-aliasing (Multisampling) or not. With FreeSpace Open 3.6.9 OpenGL is strongly recommended over the Direct3D

"Allow non standard modes" will let you choose resolutions other than 1024x768 and 640x480. There may be some small graphics alignment errors, but these are generally small and virtually unnoticeable.

Half Life = Tram at the very beginning.
Half Life 2 = Train at the beginning, first time playing with the mavity gun.
World of Warcraft, first flight from Ironforge to Stormwind, still makes me go Woah every so often, flying mounts did.

Half-life 1, with the opening tram sequence

Eve Online, my first MMO, seeing other players flying around, and the scale of universe

"Red Five standing by"

Are we allowed arcade games? The original vector graphics Star Wars sit in version wowed me like no other game before. It was always the first machine I'd look for if I went to a new arcade. Absolutely thrilling game.

Kingpin

had just got my first PC with a Voodoo 3 in it, was absolutely amazed by it plus you could tell the characters to go and get ****** haha
