What game wowed you the most when you first played it?

I remember playing an arcade game that was similar to after burner and at the end you had to land your plane on an air craft carrier.

The wow about this was the fact that the arcade machine had free movement so you could spin completely upside down etc - it was very disorientating!!

Can anyone else remember going on this?

I heard the rumors of the full 360-degree afterburner machine but I never saw one :( I saw another arcade flight-sim with 360-degree cabinet tho, think it was G-LOC. I only remember the afterburner machine which wobbled and tilted a little - obviously far more impressive when you're a kid.

edit: Yep, it was G-LOC R360 :

I think thats the major prob with a lot of games now. Theres always so much hype even when the game has just been said to be in the making. Expectations get high and upon release these expectations get crushed.

I feel game developers need to keep games as hush hush as possible until release. I think that would serve a much better "wow" smack. Because you have no idea what to expect.

That's not the problem:

The problem is games trying to appeal to the lowest common denominator, for the most mass appeal, as the gaming market now is exploding. I couldn't barely get into GAME in Birmingham Pallisades at lunchtime. There was a complete mix of people from allsorts of backgrounds. Ironically, there were none of the 18-25 y.o's :)

Clock back 10 years, there was a wall of PC games as far as the eye could see and the people in there were seen as the people who goto Games Workshop lol. Now, the latest game has got to appeal to my missus, nan, dad, nephew and my cocker spaniel.

Totally agree. I guess it's increasingly more difficult to keep hush a game when the development times, budget and teams on them get increasingly larger, according to players' expectations.

Probably either Doom 2 or Starwing.

Besides that (and for later games) it would be tight between - wipeout, ridge racer and 'later on' gran turismo.

OMG!!! Woohoo!! thats the one! I went on in at olympia in scarborough a number of years back.

I'm not the smallest chap (thats an understatement) and it was really knackering being swung around and upside down and you still have to have enough calmness to land it on the carrier after being flung about!!

Man I wonder if I can get one 2nd hand for £10 :D

Homeworld 1. No other game has made me go "woooooooooow" since....bit disappointing really :(

%100 ***. October 1999 the month gaming dreams were realized.

In a much more minor way was the original FIFA on Sega Megadrive because of the "EA SPORTS" speech at the start. I was amazed seriously.

a lot mentioned already, but 1 game that stood out for me Was Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight.

A great game in it's own right, but after I completed it a few times, I managed to get my hands on a 3D accelerator card and was able to make the switch from software to hardware 3D graphics.

It completly blew me away, not only did it look fantastic, it was smooth as silk

Actually thinking about it, i never had a PC until 1999 so Starfox on the SNES was AMAZING when it came out, my first awesome 3d experience

The story was good too. Post-ROTJ Star Wars for the win :)
