What have you done to your car today?

I don't want sympathy, I don't deserve it. I know I'm an idiot already... I'm in disbelief at myself.

I want constructive comments which I have received (thankyou), all I wanted to avoid was people saying "I told you so" smugly, and taking the pee toooo much... :p

The seller is talking to me, I think he feels guilty... I'm going to tread carefully and see if he feels like making a small contribution to clear his conscience a bit...

Don't be so hard on yourself. It's 20+ year old car, they have issues and these things happen. This is nowhere near as bad as the Celica. That was accident damaged and the seller was a toad.

Just deal with it logically. Frozennova is spot on. This won't be as bad as it seems to sort out. Shame you're not up north as my local specialist (CBS autos) would have you sorted in no time. These cares are like lego compared to most and parts are abundant. If you can't sort a deal with the seller, find yourself a local specialist and get some advice and use the MX5 forums.

Replaced both crankcase valves on my 645ci and got rid of a daft whistling noise it was making. Next up is trying to figure out why my vacuum pump is so damn noisy.

My Dad has actually taken sympathy on me this time (or perhaps he has just admitted defeat that I'm incapable of buying a car which works) and has offered to rebuild the engine for me. Sounded like he might even fit some better internals in the process of I chose to buy some... He talked calmly to me about it on the phone, which was unfamiliar.

I feel a bit better now.

Acme you could sell the car and cut your losses but I think it would be too much of a loss.

Get another engine which is ok for cheap and stick it in. Couple £100 at most and go from there.

We make mistakes but you have to go with your head to buy a car these days not your heart.

Good on him for doing that but try and do most of it if not all with him to build your own confidence. You love getting stuck in anyway so will be a positive experience (hopefully).

Its not nice but at the end of the day, every time something like this happens make sure you learn from it! Mistakes are fine as long as you remember what you did wrong for next time.

Don't be too hard on yourself and get it sorted. See what the seller says too, he might own up to some problems if you're frank with him and say your keeping the car and just want to sort it so any more details would be appreciated.

@Rybo89 - I'm pretty sure it already has with cars. End of the day this is how you learn but @Acme you need to learn properly. Don't go give your hard earned money before seeing a car. This is the biggest mistake. Head over heart remember.

I made the mistake with both hondas I bought. Never again have I made that mistake.

Blimey, when will you learn? People don't tend to blindly swap cars on the internet for no reason.

Mind you, it doesn't sound as bad as the Celica situation was. As said, MX5 engines are cheap and plentiful, swap one in with the help of some friends and borrow an engine crane if need be. If you're serious about learning to work on cars then this would be an excellent way to get stuck in. Even replacing the rings and rebuilding it won't be the end of the world. The rest of the issues are easily sorted, and this is likely to be less of a loss-making exercise than simply selling it.

Don't need one, my chances of procreating are slim enough as is. :p

I do feel a lot better now, thanks all... It seemed like the absolute end of the world but I see its not quite as bad as I thought...

think it shows how immature you are mentally, you're sooner or later going to actually "grow up" and deal with problems better ;) right now you seem to freak out and run to the internet haha.

imo it's far from bad, deal with it and get on with your life. No point stressing.
