What have you done to your car today?

I'm sure you've checked already, but a minor boost leak?

ignore that... you mentioned compression is down.

If there's no smoke to indicate a ring land, I think it's time to whip the head off and investigate.

That's the most annoying part, if it wasn't for it making way under what I thought it was going to at the Dyno day I wouldn't have even suspected something was wrong.

Only thing left to do is pull the head now, probably won't be round to doing it that till the new year as I can't be bothered at the moment and I don't rely on the car
Not something daft like the ECU losing its map or something?

Definitely a mechanical problem with the low compression

After a couple of hours diagnosing and almost of week of pondering I'm still not particularly any closer to working out what damage the MX5 engine has sustained.

Exhaust manifold isn't cracked.
2 cylinders low on compression
Piston crown to top of the cam cover measures the same on all 4 so no bent rods.
No usual noises

That leaves headgasket, but then it isn't using coolant, there's no oil/coolant contamination either. Completely confused

With a headgasket issue, you'd only get coolant loss or oil contamination if the HG has failed on a connection with the coolant system. You could find that the HG has failed on a part not connected to the coolant system. You may even find that the headgasktet has failed connecting the two pistons if they are next to each other.

Yea we suspect it's gone on the thinnest part of of the gasket between 2 and 3.

Would explain the erratic AFRs I'm seeing on the wideband as it'll be causing some weird internal EGR effect.

Compression test was done cold:
Cyl 1 : 150psi
Cyl 2: 125psi
Cyl 3: 125psi
Cyl 4: 150psi.

This time last year it was 175psi across all 4 warm

Ringlands?

Dropped it off at BMW for the battery lead quality enhancement recall thingy this morning....
Approaching 5 hours......
Just had the call as I was half way through typing this

My car battery is flat for the 4th time this week. Need a new battery right now so need to pay Halfords prices.

This is the recommended one when putting my reg in but it seems expensive.

http://www.halfords.com/motoring/bu...year-guarantee-hcb075-calcium-12v-car-battery

The battery that is fitted now is 12v 55ah 255A, the one Halfords are recommending is 550A, seem like too much?

Is that all it cost - Just had mine changed for only £145 - Although the old battery was showing 12.3v in mornings it didn't start the car - Thought new Android radio was culprit but seems a cell had gone. Started fine ever since the change.

Focus 2.0 TDCi - I couldn't have changed it myself as it weighed in at 30kg or there about and it's half under the scuttle -:rolleyes:

I thought it was expensive as 2 of my friends changed their car battery and they were only £45 but upon checking online, prices seem to vary from £70-£130 for the battery i needed so didn't actually mind paying £87 to Halfords. I was in a rush too and couldn't wait for one to be delivered.
