Had cam belt and water pump done on Wednesday. Haven't really driven it much since but popped the bonnet a short while ago and noticed the coolant level in the expansion tank was below the min marker. Topped up with about half a litre and somehow the water level didn't seem to change much at all. Then took a look underneath the car to see a couple of small wet patches on the ground and a few drips on the undertray. Great.
Took it back to the garage today. I know they've been dealing with it for at least 2 and a half hours because they'd moved my car shortly after I dropped it off while I was still in the area. Anyway they just called me to say it's now sorted out and that the problem was to do with a rubber bung in the water pump, that the coolant was leaking out from there.
Does this sound right? Why would a water pump have a rubber bung on it?
Having looked at pics of the pump for my car, there isn't one. Perhaps they meant the gasket was knackered, or perhaps it was a cover up for something else like the pump bolts not being done up properly.
