What have you done to your car today?

Dunno what was up last night but I was driving home around 10-11pm and there was a dead cat and 2x freshly dead badgers on the main road and a fox and a badger ran across in front of me as well - fortunately nothing I had to do more than slow up slightly for.

Spring, mating seasons? They all gone all nuts and full of energy or something.

I'd like to be able to see inside mine, had naively taken front liner out a while back but you don't see anything, or, as far as I remember, when I ran an amplifier cable to boot and had to lift carpet/underlay+remove seat.
I've not understood how dirt/water can get inside, as drainage holes suggest; ideally I'd flush any dirt out with water.
The only proper way to inspect the sills is to remove the plastic sill cover and snap a load of securing clips in the process. To a small extent you can see how the jacking points themselves are holding up by laying on the ground and looking up at the immediate area surrounding each of the four jack pads.

I did the front wheel arches four/five years ago now and replaced them with eBay specials which came painted in the correct colour and they actually had a decent colour match on the car. Now they both have very small rust spots where stones have chipped the paint especially where the panels meet the wheel arch liner and sills, luckily they still seem to be available on eBay so I'll sort those again at some stage. I know when I removed the wheel arch liner there was a fair amount of dirt trapped in a corner at the front of the sills, so that was all cleaned out. Rear arches are a different thing as I remember having the rear wheels off when I first bought the car and properly scrubbed the inner arch lip and sprayed them up with Bilt Hamber S50, but I think the rot had already crept in all the way back in 2014.

In general, my E46 has been a solid car which is why I don't mind spending a bit of money on it now and I don't see them all to often these days so it is nice to have something a bit older and something that isn't an over styled cross-over SUV blob thing. Plus the E92 is an auto, so I have to have a manual to sit along side it :)

Have an intermittent misfire on my V6S F-type. Local JLR dealers can't even look at it for five weeks but have advised to keep off the road to avoid potential serious damage to the catalytic converter. Have a local indy doing a quick diagnosis tomorrow morning but won't be able to do much until April 13th. First car failure for maybe ten years :(
Got her back yesterday with six new shiny spark plugs. Old ones were very dirty and the garage couldn't replicate the misfire. Went home happy as larry (apart from a very large hole in my pocket) but misfire reappeared after 25 minutes. Going back this morning and when they can they will try new coils. Very disappointing. I have asked them to replace the injector (£300) while they're in there. I can't be having this car broken as it's my only vehicle.

Says on Halfords page...

You have a 14 day cooling off period, during which you can cancel your membership (as long as you haven't used any of your benefits). After that time, you will only be able to cancel at the end of the first 12 months.

Fixed!

Bought a house a year ago, unforeseen renovation costs are spiralling so that means liquidating assets.
My man logic tells me that selling the Caterham doesn't make sense as it won't depreciate much more. The Q7 will probably lose around 7 grand a year, but it means a grumpy Mrs.
Also the Q7 is worth almost double the Caterham and I can get a cheap stop-gap car for family duties. Truth?

Some trials and tribulations of Crown ownership from the past couple of weeks...

Went out for a drive the other week, and it threw a CEL, I pulled over, cycled the ignition, and went to turn around and head home, when it decided to eject a spark plug out of the head...

Naturally I did not have a spark plug socket with me, or anything I could use really, and the coolant level was very low as well which concerned me, so I opted to just get recovered home.

RAC sent someone very quickly, was very happy with them!

The offending ejected sparkplug. Apparently these engines can vibrate the spark plugs loose if they weren't torqued correctly.

Removed and inspected all the plugs, re-set the gaps as they were a bit off, and torqued them to spec.

I noticed while I was in there that the rocker covers were leaking a little, and the bolts were a little loose, so I torqued them to the factory spec.

Which then caused this... Phooey!

So I whipped the cover off...

This is a common problem apparently, they are made of cast aluminium and are quite fragile.

Got it welded up by a local friend...

Lovely. Its covered by an engine cover so no need to dress it much, rather leave the full weld bead for strength.

Re-installed it, but not before noticing this on the driveway... That is where my coolant was going. All over the floor.

Pinpointed the leak to this coolant bypass pipe behind the water pump.

Got the bits... (didn't need the bypass pipe but got it just in case)

The car owes me some reliability now after this... :D

IMO you'll regret selling the Caterham one day, unless you plan to buy a replacement of some sort. Whereas will you regret selling the family car? Maybe for the short term, but if you play your cards right with the stop-gap it shouldn't be too painful.

This, sell Q7.

Your Q7 losing 7K a year is insanity. You could get a fairly plush family car for the cost of one year of depreciation.

Trust me that isn't how it works :s

Its a Toyota! :p

My 33 year old BMW hasn't left me stranded or broken down in any meaningful way in 7 years... *knock on wood*

What kind of bizarre world is this where I am driving that around picking up parts to repair my comparatively very modern Toyota??
