What have you done to your car today?

A little bit of an experiment. On my previous car I replaced the original screen with a 10.25" Android head unit and got quite used to the size. With my current F30 3 Series I've got the stock 8.8" screen in there which needed a few tweaks to get working with my retrofitted NBT Evo head unit. It doesn't have the same colour depth that a native Evo display would have, it has no touch screen and it needs a voltage regulator to work, but it does work.

I also wanted touch screen but the Evo 8.8" touch screens for BMW F3x cars are selling for stupid money - £300 to £400 which is just ridiculous. I did a bit of research and it seems that a G30 5 Series screen can be made to fit and I found one for significantly cheaper than any of the F3x displays. So I bought one.

Old vs New:

New screen coded and loosely fitted:

Just some slight mounting problems to overcome:

I've got a few days off work soon so I'll get it all sorted out properly :) Just nice to have a bigger screen that's much nicer to look at and touch functionality is a nice bonus.

I'll see you and raise you , his previous car

Reminds me of years ago when I was 18 and impaled my Polo on a tree.

At the time I had a thread going to spec me a hot hatch. I had to put it on hold because I stacked my 53HP puddle jumper. :D

People suggested I should probably hold off on the hot hatch for a while... :o

My 1st car was an XR3i when I was 19 about 10months in I crashed it into Wool/Knitting shop and no it wasnt a soft landing either , came around a bend too fast to be honest to find a bus in the middle of the road coming at me .

Its was late eveing so shop was empty luckily all I remember were all baby clothesand little hats all over the windscreen , poor car was a right off .

My car is chucking intermittently under hard acceleration. Coincidence that I filled up with petrol yesterday? Will see how it runs tomorrow. Could be expensive. No errors and fine under normal acceleration.

Not the start to the day I was expecting..

I was coming off a slip road onto the Orwell bridge and saw something in the road and managed to avoid it with the front wheel, but not the NSR, and pop went the tyre.
I just carried on driving until I got to work, then chucked on a part worn as I couldn't get the tyre I wanted until 3pm, and I finished at 12 today.
The sidewall damage is from driving it flat and not from what I hit.

Wasn’t great on the dual carriageway this morning, but then seemed fine for the rest of the journey. Will see what it’s like later I guess. No warnings or anything. Floored it on the final leg of my journey, no issue.

please keep us updated. I wouldn't mind getting a bigger screen in my F36

Managed to get it screwed in with a little fabrication of some mounts:

So far so good. Just waiting for some Kydex to arrive to sort out the gap at the back now.

Definitely loving the additional screen size. It's also a higher resolution than my original 8.8" screen was and colours, brightness etc are much better so it's been worthwhile so far. Having touch screen wasn't essential but it is nice to have and makes CarPlay a bit nicer to use.

Can you supply a quick parts list of what you got?

I'd love to give this a go.

Also, any coding you had to do, as I can replicate via ProTool app I expect.

Sure. I bought the 10.25" screen from a G30, part number on the screen is down as 6810511. Same video cable works fine so nothing else needs changing. The mounting brackets you can see I kind of bodged with some nuts, bolts and some leftover Ikea wall mount brackets. I've seen people doing it using cut down bits of plastic though so there's many ways to do that. It doesn't need anything too extensive.

What head unit do you have? If it's NBT Evo then this screen will work fine after coding it. Coding variables I changed are under HU_NBT2 and I changed the following:

These settings are probably already set correctly if you have an Evo 8.8" screen but I had to change them as I had an original apix1 screen working with it:
CID_APIX_MODE - apix2
CID_COM_MODE - mii
CID_COLOR_DEPTH - 24

These need changing for the 10.25":
CID_DISPLAY_RES - Default 1280_480, change to 1440_540
CID_DISPLAY_SIZE - Default 8_8, change to 10_25
DISPLAY_SIZE_RESOLUTION - Default 8.8_1280x480, change to 10.25_1280x480,
DIMMUNGSVARIANTE - Default neue_dimmung, change to alte_dimmung

Then for enabling touch screen if you don't have it, I changed the following 3 - all were nicht_aktiv and I changed to aktiv:

CID_TOUCH_SL
CID_TOUCH
CID_HMI_TOUCH

Thank you, that's great.
I'll get bidding on some screens.

Did an easy job on the E92, even for me. New brake pads and wear sensor on the rear. When it comes to brake calipers and pads, there seems to be no difference to what is on the E46, so that made things even easier. I would've thought that they would have at least changed something about the design/build of them on the face of it. The only thing slightly different was the design of the wear sensor and the routing of it.

The next job is to try and finally sort the handbrake on the E46 so that I can book it in for an MOT, I don't think it holds quite well enough for an MOT at the moment. I still feel more at home when I sit in the E46 even though I haven't driven it anywhere since January, and the thing starts on the button even though I've never had the battery on charge during that time. I'll try and sort it tomorrow because I've had enough of the sun for one day.

The following job will be fitting a new control arm on the E92. I've changed the drop links, but there is still a knock from the driver's front. The car had a new control arm on the passenger front just before I bought it, so I'm hoping a new one on the driver's side will sort it. Obviously, the previous owner decided that the driver's side would be OK while they sold the car, so they cheaped out and just changed the passenger side.
