What have you done to your car today?

Topped the R56 Mini up with oil again. Dipstick is terrible to read so no idea whether there's enough in or not.

No visible leaks so contemplating whether I've enough skill to replace the rocker cover (with integrated PCV that commonly fails) myself or whether to pay someone.

Also thinking about whether I can do my front drop links myself as think they are a likely source of a knocking/rattle when driving over rough ground, and seem cheap enough to be a might as well replace item.

Both will have to wait though as the Countryman is now due a Service so need to get that sorted first

I can't remember the name of them but there's a mini specialist and their number 1 product is...dipstick upgrade

I thought the dipstick on mine was poor, but the one on our Mini is a whole other level of uselessness!

Lohen? They sell a Cravenspeed one.

Gave in and bought a new dipstick, but went for the killallchrome one as I'm not rich enough to spend £70 on the cravenspeed one

We have a 2003 Mini R50 which has been in the family since new. It's on 132K and it's 2nd engine - the first one I took scuba diving and it didn't end well.

Partner complained engine is lumpy and has cut out on her a few times. ODB scanner says miss-fire cylinder 2.

Tried replacing the leads and plugs and also swapped the injectors round - still No.2

Went on the scrounge for a compression test kit and, as expected, no compression on Number 2, sigh....

Spoke with the garage nearby who are pretty sound and they quoted 10 hours before any remedial work.

Decided to give it a go myself - can hardly make it worse! A few youtube videos later and I'm ready to go :)

Took the head off on Friday

This bit looks OK

I'm not confident of replacing the one valve - lapping and setting etc - so have ordered a recon head.

I took the oil pump/plate off the side and after much heat, snapping teeth and bending puller feet, I managed to get the crank sprocket off.

That and a stubborn alternator bolt that fought me for every turn and rounded off, were really the only properly hard things to overcome.

The new head, gasket and chain set and a few other bits and bobs are on their way. Going to take Friday off and hopefully be in a position to fire her up Saturday evening all being well.

I like how you've become archetypical Golf R owner so quickly - just noticed you are wearing your front plate on the dashboard lol.

How does the boot compare to a "proper" estate?
Ha ha. Absolutley.

To be fair, the front plate fell off yesterday after closing the bonnet after fitting the battery cover. The rear fell off the day after getting it home from the supplying dealer. I don't know what cheap tape he used to fit the plates, but it's pants. Waiting on V5 so I can fit my plates, so not gonna try to refit the front plate just now. The rear one is better fitted, as it was going to be on longer.

The boot is great. I don't really need any more. I have my Caravelle when I need proper space, but wanted something easier for taking the dog in, and the Golf estate is perfect for that. The boot is actually quite big, so that's good. First thing I did was add the dog guard and line the boot. I did consider the Tiguan or Arteon shootingbrakes, but they were a step above in cost. And thought the Golf would be more fun than either. And then didn't want the mk8 Golf R. As said above, the mk7.5 is "peak Golf".

The other stuff was just little bits I did to make it a little nicer. I didn't actually care about the CF mirror covers. I just didn't like the silver ones, so thought I'd try the CF style. Same with the shift paddles. The original ones were too small. Didn't like the garish metal scaffolding looking ones. So thought these looked like a good compromise. The rest of the stuff I've done are more for easier use. Adding a couple of phone charges and dashcam, and a bit of coding to unlock features I preferred.

Got new wheels to go on as soon as the tyres arrive at Costco too. Then that's probably it. Before maybe mapping it next year.

Ditched the black wheels in favour of shadow chrome... :)

Was a bit worried at first, they are darker than the shadow chrome I had on my GT, and when I picked it up, I kind of thought they still needed to be a shade lighter. But after driving away and stopping to get a photo, I'm happier - they're definitely more anthracite, especially when they catch the light, and I can now actually see the wheel design. Could maybe do with being a tad lighter, but too light can end up being a bit blingy, so happy with them as they are...

Total cost was £360 at Rimtec Refurbs, Meopham, they had the car for 2 days.
Also had brand new tyres fitted in a larger size moved from 215/40R18 to 225/40R18 - more choice for better price in that section width (Eagle F1AS6), plus the tyre is less stretched on the rim, so hopefully should protect that new paintjob from kerbs a little better :D

Replaced my stock rear tail lights with a smoked one with built in LEDs and a light bar, looks much better in person as it seems to look uneven in this photo for some reason. Quite Happy with the look of it, tail light, brake light and indicators are built in and are sequential, the reverse lights and fogs I had to use my own autobeam LEDs.

I think I will be doing this. My son started school in September and the car parking is a bit manic. Que the missus coming back sheepish with two major kerb marks on both sides of the front wheels!!! A little bit more rubber can only be a good thing! I am going to wait till after winter though and will most likely go silver or bronze. Not sure yet.

Oof. Bronze would look good on red. It would look good on my blue, too, but I wasn't daring enough to go for it.

As for the tyre size change, it seems a bit of a no brainer....the only downside I heard from other owners was that you might lose a little sharpness of feel. So far they feel good though, although I need to put more miles on them.

It's a small size difference, any changes in feel would be very subtle at best/worst. No brainer for the tyre choices though as you said.

I felt the exact same. Just got a set of wheels done for my Golf, and I was considering bronze, but bottled it and went for anthracite.

Indeed. One other nice consequence is that it's made my speedometer more accurate. It was already pretty good, reading 1-2mph higher than GPS at most. The slight increase in tyre diameter now has it showing absolutely bob on.
