What have you done to your car today?

Wtf, why even do that?
If he was in doubt, then pass and advise.
They hoped i wouldnt question it i guess. Unfortunately for them i happened to have a set of digital vernier calipers in the car so when i checked and showed him it was above the pass limit with one grrove at 1.82mm and the rest at 2.5mm- 3.5mm for the other 3 grooves he got all defensive and said i could challenge it via mot appeals and it would take a week or two. I didn't have the time to waste as i had work several hours away the next day.

Raised a complaint with their regional and got the car booked for 2 proper tyres in a weeks time. :D

Whipped out some vernier calipers

Like a boss  I would have loved to have been there

How does the appeals process work? How can they prove the date? Date-stamped photograph?

Drove the countryman yesterday and heard a rattle coming from the drivers door. Parked up and realised half of the door card was hanging loose!

Had a look at it and ended up taking it off completely to figure out the issue. Turns out 1 of the holes that a metal clip goes into had completed snapped and another was nearly done.
Ended up reconstructing the broken one with a bit of a cable tie and some hot melt glue, and reinforced the other one.

Only issue was putting it back together one of the screws (behind the interior door handle) just turns but doesn't tighten, so need to replace the clip/nut for that sometime.

Root cause for the door card coming loose looks to be that some heavy handed oaf had been in the door before and damaged the clips, as the insulating foam sheets had been ripped through to get into the inside of the door, and hadn't even been taped back up.

You email DVSA and they’ll respond within 5 days, then will re inspect your vehicle (you’ll have to pay the full test fee).
If the results aren’t correct the inspector will amend them and give you a fresh (correct) MOT.
The only problem is (especially with tyres) you shouldn’t really drive the car until the inspection is carried out, as in this case the tyre would probably be under the 1.6 mm limit if it was driven for a week.
I’ve had it a couple of times and it isn’t pleasant at all (get it wrong and I will have points on my MOT licence), hence why I said earlier in the thread that if the tester isn’t 100%, then always pass and advise.
One thing I always do with low tread tyres is put the make & measurements on the MOT certificate, that way I’ve covered my back as best I can.
But, there’s nothing to stop the person owning the car swapping the tyres around or putting on a part worn, and how the inspector handles that I don’t know.
Just to add, almost all MOT stations use the DVSA approved depth gauge (non digital) as they’re cheap, but when it gets down to reading between say 1.8mm and under 1.6mm are a pain.

Test as presented, I've known testers loose their licence to test for this, even when they presented there original paperwork. Thought that you would have known this.

Ah, ok.
@bobuk What I meant is (as per earlier posts) that if the person who’s car has failed complains to the DVSA because they thought it should pass and then goes and fits a new/part worn tyre before the DVSA re inspect it.
Why any tester would go swapping tyres/wheels mid MOT is a mystery to me, I mean you’d PRS it, then fit a tyre afterwards.

Operation improve wiring safety and add more fuses and wires for stuff complete-ish...

?
I know it’s test as presented, not sure what you’re saying?
The vehicle is tested by DVLA has it's presented, if the owner has changed the tyres before DVLA test it it passes, that leaves the original tester hanging, normally he will loose his licence with the amount of points adding up, who really wants to be a tester ? Just to clarify I am no longer a tester having retired in 2019 but was testing since 1984 and station manager.

That’s just not true, if the DVSA reinspect a car for a bald tyre and the presenter has obviously fitted a new one since, it’s incredibly unlikely the tester would get points as it’d be so obvious, that and the DVSA would (and do) ask that the vehicle is in the same condition it was when it was first inspected.
I’ve been testing for 20+ years and have seen plenty of appeals over that time.
