What have you done to your car today?

Why would I retrofit a USB socket on the console somewhere when it is neatly tucked into the glovebox? :p

The socket wiring will be cable tied later, it's for the dashcam and/or additional socket for charging devices. No need to make it ultra neat in the glovebox, it's out of sight anyway.

I suppose so. I guess it makes sense if you don't really use your glovebox. :p

What do you use your glovebox for that it needs to remain open, or is opened on every drive? :D I just throw stuff in there that might be useful here and there, gloves, hat, pen+pad etc!

Oh no nothing, but I mean that I'd find it a pain to have my USB connector and the power plug for my dashcam and things in there with loads of stuff piled on top. But then again I don't have that little divider like you do, to keep the USB cable away from everything else.

Does anyone? I think I only ever open mine when I need to update the satnav or something. They are never really big enough to keep anything in them bigger than the stuff you can just chuck in the centre console anyway.

I beg to differ. Not had any issues in my rattly old can with crimps, they aren't amazing but they are much better than using stuff like scotch blocks or chocolate blocks.

Acme, you don't need to rip apart anything to sort out your problem.

Where you have the wire going to the second bulb, run that into a relay (87/87a should be fine iirc) on the switching line, have an inline fuse between battery and the relay, then from the switched (on) pin, run that to the headlamp. - This is exactly what the loom I linked to for the mk2 Golf does and is all you need to do.

Hi InvaderGIR, does this look correct?

I do. I have a first aid kit, an ice scraper, a pair of pliers, some cable ties, a torch charger, a sat-nav holder, a hi-vis, and a diagnostic reader in mine. :p

The more I can fit in there, the less I have to have in my door pockets and things. For example my passenger side door pocket is empty and my passengers can put their bits and bobs in it, and the drivers side door pocket just has a duster, a torch and a lighter in it.

Everything else I need is in the boot.

I've noticed that in modern BMWs they are pathetically small.

My S3 has a fairy big one and there's loads of space, even with a CD changer in there!

I open and slam it shut on a regular basis, but that's because of an annoying rattle :o

Spoilered that up nicely Acme, top stuff! :p

On the note of gloveboxes, I like the one in the E46, it's big enough to put more stuff in there than what any other cubby will fit and on the convertible it locks itself when you lock the doors so whatever is in there is extra secure.

The Mondeo's glovebox is pretty spacious too but I only ever open it to remove the USB stick to add music.

Not sure if I have a particularly large glovebox or a particularly small centre console, but I use the glovebox all the time.

Usually have my iPad, iPod, car handbook, satnav, various chargers and cables and insurance documents in there - my centre console barely fits a few CDs so I hardly ever use it.

Doesn't your glovebox open by simply touching a part of the dash above it? I'd use it regularly just to do that :p

I grafted mine into the centre console too, I even put a white LED behind it so I can find the 'ole at night :D

Today I have done a few little bits, swapped a drive shaft, pattern shafts are rubbish! Sorted a few bits out in the engine bay too, getting there now.

Main bits left to do is to sort out the wiring loom for the starter motor/alternator, a few wires to shorten and wrap up, then paint the rocker cover.

Inner wings could do with a clean and polish too.

No need for an 87a relay, just a boggo 87...

...but yeah, pin 30 is your new 12v feed (fused) and 87 goes to the head light. 85/86 are signal wire to ground, either way round is fine on those two.

When there is a signal (doesn't need to be 12v) to 85/86 then the gate between 30 and 87 closes and you have a nice clean 12v feed to the light.

87a relay just gives an extra output which would be live until you turned the lights on (at which point it'd switch to pin 87), so I'd avoid using one of those for your application.

Forgive me if I'm being ignorant, but isnt that a bad place for the air filter, curved away from the front of the car, behind the headlight?

Love your car by the way. I have a massive soft spot for sleepers. :)

Also thanks Invader GIR. The voltage has started to drop on the other side too now, so I think I'm going to just re-do the whole lot...

Yes it is a pencil drawing, which I took a photo of, and then annotated in MS Word.
Only the best techniques used here. :D

Well I went to collect my motor from the bodyshop last night after it had been delayed anyway....and ended up leaving it there. Not happy with a few bits so he's got to get it sorted, he is now aware of how picky I am and he knows he has a rep to uphold so having the rear bumper done now FOC for the inconvenience.

Apart from a few bits it was looking lovely for the money though.

Can you see a better place to put it? :P options are very limited unfortunately, but below it is a hole where the original air box resonator was, so it does get nice cool air through there. I've monitored intake temps via OBD and they stay very low, barely hit 40C which is decent. It would hit 80C on the standard turbo and intercooler :o

I love sleepers too! It's soo much fun.
