What have you done to your car today?

Replaced the viscous fan unit on the E36. Was worried that it was not working when the temp was creeping up when I was testing it. However, I remembered that I had taken off the MASSIVE enclosed shroud to the rad, which it seems, is vital to providing enough heat to activate the switch.

Temp now seems stable in stop start traffic and stops me having to blast the heating to bring it back down :D

Oil leak!

I had a half bottle of oil top up in the boot in one of those boot tidy velcro canvas bag things and it turns out the cap must not have been on tight as over time oil has leaked all over the inside of the bag.

Lucky as everything inside there was in its own case anyway so nothing major was damaged from the oil,. the AA EU kit had to be binned though as most of that got covered.

Good thing none of the oil seeped into the boot carpet. Gonna keep it in the shed from now on I think.

At the end of the day, what is £350 to offset the death of my car for a while

I wouldn't waste the money. Just keep running it for a few months and then get something you want. Surely going by the last page it's not going to die next week?

Picked up the rear bed for the mk2 and took it to a mate to get some welding done.

Went to change my rear brake discs and pads today. Failed on taking my wheels off. Rounded off two sockets so bought a new one, got 3 bolts undone then went to do a 4th and this happened:

Damn. The guys who changed my tyres did those bolts up ridiculously tight.

The nuts being gunned on is obviously part of the issue -but your tools shouldn't be breaking like that, was it particularly cheap?

I have a length of bar I keep in the shed that's just the thing for slipping over and undoing hub nuts / stupidly tight wheel nuts

Changed the cambelt, all tensioners and water pump on the Scoob. The old belt was fine in terms of milage but was getting a little old. As I'm using the car for a hefty commute now I thought it'd be a good time to change the lot.

Surprisingly easy... I was always daunted at the thought due to engine layout and comically long belt but thoroughly enjoyed getting my hands dirty.

Locked the keys in the boot. Currently awaiting a call back from an auto locksmith. Probably get them back tomorrow at this rate.

I blame the fact that I hadn't gotten round to fixing the dash/bootlid buttons and was therefore using the button on the keyfob to open it. Otherwise the rest of the car would've been open too. No spare sadly, though I did get home today to find an entirely new blank key waiting to be cut... :D

Not with the AA/RAC?

The missus has locked my keys in my car twice and both times the AA have came out and unlocked the car for me :)

Yeah it wasn't a particularly expensive one. Now have a decent new one and managed to get the bolts undone eventually. Still a pain to do but at least this one didn't snap.
