What have you done to your car today?

Sounds like you spoke to Neil then

I had the same as far as power, they were happy to increase it within a couple of months though.

It's nice knowing that there's no nasty surprise premium increases when you ring up to inform them of a new mod. First time I have ever stuck with the same insurance company two years running

Just a shame they can't cover BMW's, but NeedToInsure were pretty good for the BMW... :)

oh they won't cover my german whip.. ah :( :D

Oh, no they can't, sorry matey. :( No BMW's at all due to claims statistics.

Apparently they attracted too many road drifters... Never! :p

The guy also mentioned that they don't really like insuring other likely candidates like S14's etc, but MX5's are OK...

Replaced the clutch pedal spring tonight.
The GT86 has a helper spring on the clutch pedal which is pivoted in such a way to serve two purposes; when the pedal is released, the spring keeps it pushed all the way up, and then as you depress the pedal past a certain point, it does the opposite and helps push it down against the clutch pressure, the idea being to make the clutch feel lighter. The downside is that is nulls the feeling of the pedal and makes the disengagement point of the clutch quite hard to judge, and you can also feel a kind of unnatural, nonlinear change in the pedal pressure as you bring it back up and the spring starts to work against you. This has been one of my main criticisms of the car since day one, and although it's a popular modification in the US to simply remove the spring, it's much harder to do on RHD models because of the design of the clutch pedal. So I'd kind of learned to live with it, but I still lurch on downshifts quite often and over-rev when pulling away.

However, about a week ago, I found a detailed guide for how to do the modification on RHD vehicles, from an Australian owner. It means taking the pedal out of the car, but apart from the discomfort of having to scrabble around in the driver's footwell, it's not too bad a job - three bolts, disconnect the master cylinder and remove some sensors, but once out of the car, it makes replacing the spring easier (no idea how some people manage it in situ).

So I took the pedal out, and replaced the very powerful OEM spring and replaced it with a less powerful aftermarket version (most people just remove the spring entirely, but this can leave the pedal a little sloppy at the top of the travel).

The result is a marked improvement in clutch feeling. The clutch itself is a little heavier, as you are now feeling the weight of the clutch itself without assistance, and this means the engagement point is much easier to judge. Straight away, I felt a difference pulling away. I took the car for a quick spin around the block and it's feeling a hell of a lot better. There's less of a tendency to over-rev as I up shift while trying to re-engage the clutch, and less lurching on downshifts. The pedal is slightly heavier, but not enormously so, and is much more linear. A bit of a faff for such a simple job, but it's made an immense improvement. Very pleased :)

Clutch assembly on my bench with the new spring installed, top right.

My girlfriends celica feels the same as what you describe and it's very hard to judge the clutch on it due to it. I always over rev the crap out of it as the car doesn't feel "right" when connecting the clutch which annoys me no end!

Perfect day to wash car today - cloudy -no wind and warm - got to drying stage and doing the channel around boot where lid sits in and heard tinkle tinkle - found new hinge pin - one of those studs with raised shoulder and hole in other end for cotter pin or slit ring. - Couldn't find where it came from so gave up looking.

Came in and sitting here I had that "I know" moment - shot out to garage and sure enough it was one of two spare ones for the garage door the door fitter put there in case I needed them - All the garage door action had made it run round the slit ring till it fell of onto car roof and this morning when opened boot lid it dropped in. Had me going for a bit I can tell you.

Huh? Greenlight are the go-to guys for insuring Silvia/200sx. Incidentally I just moved mine away from them and now with Sky, the renewal wasn't too keenly priced this year and they were going on about some nonsense re. power level and mileage. Luke smashed the price, gave me more mileage and couldn't give a monkeys about the engine power.

Tbh I've always found greenlight to be really quite rude on the phone once they realise the price is either uncompetitive or they won't cover for whatever reason.

Chris Knott and Sky have been the opposite - always helpful regardless of the outcome

Same with all these companies really, each experience will be different depending on who or what they're interested in insuring.

Looks like mine will probably go back to a multicar policy next year as the sepcialist guys don't seem competitive on an unmodified car. Had to pay £35 for the remaining 3 months cover which I find hard to believe should be representative (considering my policy only is circa £350 per year)

Weird. He said on the phone that they don't cover many cars of that type because people drift them on the roads etc. Maybe he was getting confused. :p

I found the guy to be very polite and chatty, certainly not rude at all, but then he said a price and I said yes please, just like that.

Pulled the eonon head unit out.
Swapped the whiteline arb to original.
Cleaned and waxed.
Polished the exhaust.
Ready to drop it off at dealer and collect the MPS.
:)

One bad point... The lacquer on one wheel decided to let go when I was cleaning it... Peeled off :(

car went in for front brake pads today, got phone call that they couldn't complete

apparently

wheel nut broke, there's quite a lot of paint damage to the wheel and the mechanic ended up in hospital with probable broken finger

I have to go and see the boss when he's back in Tuesday (used them for years) what would be normal? I assume they will have to refurb wheel at their expense but is the cost or removal and replacement of broken wheel nut down to them or me ?

I'd say its pretty cut and dry. They replace anything and everything they damaged.

Though its probably not worth arguing over a wheel nut if it comes to it.

I couldn't help but chuckle though... Broken wheel nut, lots of paint damage to the wheel, and a broken finger? What were they using to get it undone? :D :D
