What is it that makes people hate Apple so much?

I believe that Apple are a success as a result of taking existing products, and producing prettier and easier to use versions. I value neither of these characteristics, so don't buy Apple products.

A considerable number of people rather like pretty & easy to use, and perhaps encouraged by years of frustration with Microsoft, now believe that Apple products are better than anything else in their field. They occasionally tell me this. However I don't hate them for it, if anything I think I pity them.

There's a gaping hole in this reasoning though, as some people I consider very technically proficient use Apple's products, and I don't know why. It can't only be that they're pretty.

I just don't like their arrogance. I don't go out of my way and start ranting and raving about how I hate Apple. I just decide not to give them my monies.

I just find the OS difficult to use. For some reason it doesn't feel as open as Windows, I have no idea why but it just feels restricted :(.

However, the build quality of the Macs I have to admit are brilliant. If I had the money I would buy one... to install Windows on :p.

In what way to do you find them arrogant, because they make their products out to be the best and revolutionary... that's called advertising :p

I think it's a perfect storm of a lot of things really but if I had to put my finger on it I would probably say that for many people Apple products represent the nadir of excess, decadence and consumerism.

Media showing people queueing around the block to buy a £400 phone, when elsewhere in the World people struggle to find water (yes it's a cliché but the juxtaposition is always in the back of peoples minds when presented with those images), or even just people seeing this when they know every penny of their wages is already accounted for on the various costs of living, etc.

There is probably an element of jealousy in there, but when you consider the sort of things Apple releases, and their price tags, it's tough to argue that they are anything other than a consumerist icon. no one needs an iPad for example and when people talk about these trinkets as "life changing" or things they couldn't live without it is kinda repulsive.

Not really... Surely fashionable clothes, bags, shoes fit that much more closely.

Western guilt? I doubt that's anything to do with why people hate Apple. What about, again, fancy clothes? Impractical fancy cars?

No one needs loads of things that they buy. Why are you singling out Apple goods?

Where did I say none of that applied to those other things?

People queueing up around the block to buy Apple stuff is in your face whenever there's a new launch, it's on the TV, it's on BBC News website. "New slightly modified phone has people queueing up for 24 hours". People hate the consumerist mentality that people would queue for such things, and by association the company that makes them.

The thread asked why people hate Apple, I gave an opinion. You talk as if I just insulted your family, and ironically that attitude is actually part of this "perfect storm" I was talking about. Apple users can often be irrationally partisan towards them.

For clarity I've got an iPhone, a MacBook Pro and I use an iPad at work on a regular basis. I'm not anti-Apple, but I would consider myself much more moderate towards them. I like their products, but my life doesn't revolve around each new release and keynote speech.

Way to go on the offensive for no reason.

Robbo, how many of those 16k posts are on this particular subject? Anyone would think you enjoy having this debate in it's various forms! :p

Not all that many really! I just find it bizarre how upset people get about Apple, it doesn't make any real sense.

My girlfriend is the same!

"Do you want to use my spare iPhone 4 dear?"

"No, Steve Jobs is an idiot."

!

I guess its because people I know who have macs, do not need them at all, they just have them because "they are better" and try to push their image of "hey i've got money so I buy Apple" to people. Also when confronted as to why their macs/phones/audio devices etc aren't practical for the reason they have them, they just avoid conversation with the "if u could afford it, u would buy it" when I wouldn't.
I have a very good friend of mine who is the only Mac user I don't dislike, who said to me "I just wanted to get a Mac, i know a PC would suit me best, but I just felt like buying a Mac for the design and beauty".
Also another idiotic argument is that "windows is crap because virus exists for them". When the market share is so big what do you expect? Also they tend to believe that virus do not exist for macs or that they never ever crash, when both things I've seen happen (and even caused a few crashes as well ;p).
The reason that I don't like the company is because they charge a LOT for upgrades, and generally the hardware.
An example is the aluminium used for MBPs. Sure the hardware will run cooler, so the electronics might last more, but.. it's a laptop, so what if after 5 years everything is fried?

So why are you saying that it's the "nadir of consumerist excess" or whatever you said?

Same for new cars. Same for new films. Same for new games. Same for new books. Why are you singling out Apple as the nadir of consumerist excess when this happens with all popular things?

I'm really not. To be honest, I find it perplexing that you are saying that I'm talking as if you'd insulted my family, when all I'm doing is asking you to defend a somewhat peculiar position.

And nor does that of the majority of Apple users, believe it or not.

I can totally understand someone not wanting a Mac, or iPad, or iPhone.

However, some people absolutely HATE Apple, you would think they were a load of child killing nutters the way some people talk about them. It's absolutely bizarre.

Also, if you try to reason with these people, their reasoning is often totally incorrect and their assumptions are silly and wrong.

What do you think causes it? Other companies certainly don't seem to get peoples backs up like this. Some people speak of Apple with a vehement disgust for everything they do. They're a technology company for goodness sake, relax?

Overpriced and overrated imo. You can build a pc for half the price that would blow a Mac out of the water. If you want to pay for style then good luck.

Haven't you been banned for that ridiculous thread you made?

Excuse me if I totally disregard what you say. :)
