What is it that makes people hate Apple so much?

I don't buy it.

People refer to them as "macbook" because thats what they are - a mac. Theres nothing else you can call them. Its not a PC, its a mac.

The biggest problem, and the one that has reared its head several times in this thread is that they are seen as fashionable. And thus it attracts exactly the same bile and hate, as those who spend £300 on a tshift because its got a certain designer on it.

Yes it is a PC.

Why is a mac not a PC? What does "Window" have to do with something being a PC? It just means personal compauter, that's exactly what any macs are. Is an Apple "Cinema Display" not a monitor?

It's all about differentiating between "normal" computers and "special" Apple computers. Macs use all the same hardware as any other computer, there is no reason it's not a PC.

You seem to ignore the other side of the spectrum. There are Apple lovers who do all that about how great Apple is, and how "crap" Microsoft is. I would expect it's these people that the extreme Apple haters are talking about when they talk about the smugness of them.

There are an annoying vocal minority like this, but the same applies to most things. It's unfair to brand a massive amount of people as 'smug' when they aren't.

As a company, I have to admit that I can't stand them (some of the reasons listed above), and I've noticed people like Robbo seemingly get all upset and offended on the mere mention of anything critical about Apple, he's extremely quick to bring out the "JEALOUS" accusations.

Upset? I'm not getting upset at all. If someone made a thread saying that Samsung owners were fools and were getting ripped off I'd be in there saying the exact same things. I'm also not 'extremely quick' to bring out the jealous accusations, but it's clear that as with anything, some people are jealous because they don't have the disposable income to purchase a full range of Apple gear that I personally know many people would like.

As I said earlier, anyone that defends Apple is branded a fanboy, even when they aren't.

Even as an iPhone user, I've always found the joke "How do you know some one has an iPhone? They always tell you" quite funny because I've noticed it a lot, for some bizarre reason people seem to be "proud" of the fact that they have an iPhone/Macbook/iMac/Mac and it's weird. "I'll send you an email from my macbook" sounds like something you'd hear from some one, "I'll send you an email from my Windows 7 Sony Vaio" doesn't, and you'd probably get arrested for saying it.

That's not a funny joke at all though :p

I see you've played the 'even as an iPhone user' card to try and defend your position, it's funny how often people do that as well.

Kylew, You're deliberately being obtuse, you know full well that the term 'PC' is the standard method of describing a personal computer that runs Windows.

I neither love nor hate Apple. I use their products because they suit me, the operating system runs smoothly and I can do what I want to do speedily and easily without the hassle of having to maintain a Windows installation. OS X is simply maintenance free. I still don't feel that Linux has the ease of use factor that comes from either Windows or OS X.

I've been using computers since the days of the Commodore PET when I was at school, I've done the lot and at this stage in my life I've moved on from the times when I was happy to tinker with them and now just want to use a computer. I work in IT and over the last few years everyone in our department (we're all pretty much the typical computer geek) has moved to Apple products for their computers of choice at home. None of us are rampent Apple fanboys (or fangirls), we just appreciate and use the products that suit us.

Kylew, You're deliberately being obtuse, you know full well that the term 'PC' is the standard method of describing a personal computer that runs Windows.

I'm not being obtuse at all. Mac computers are still PCs, nothing about "personal computer" implies it means Windows based, by pretending that Macs aren't PCs, I think people are trying to at like they're "something special". People seemingly like to own things that seem special or that not many people own. Fact is, everything that makes a PC a PC makes a Mac a PC too.

So why aren't they allowed to call it something else? It's their hardware (in part) that runs their software...?

Of course it does, if you say "PC" then everyone automatically thinks of a box running Windows. If you say "Mac" then it's just a way of differentiating that it's a personal computer (note, non capitalised) that runs Mac OS. To suggest otherwise is being deliberately argumentative.

Maybe you should just tell yourself that when they say "smug" they're talking about the ones who are smug.

I'm not just talking about this thread, I've seen you in other threads jump to defend Apple when some one was just being critical of them, it came across as if you believed they were above criticism. S

Some people might be jealous, but why is that the first thing you jump to? Because it seems that you think owning Apple stuff is "desirable", "exclusive" and something "special"?

As I said earlier, anyone that defends Apple is branded a fanboy, even when they aren't.

It's not "anyone", it's when (as I've seen you do) people get all defensive over someone being critical of Apple, you're very quick to defend Apple as soon as some one says something "negative". I don't blame people for calling you a fanboy from what I've seen in other friends.

That's not a funny joke at all though :p
I know you don't find it funny, I do find it funny especially because I've found it to be true (from my own experiences).

I see you've played the 'even as an iPhone user' card to try and defend your position, it's funny how often people do that as well.

You mean to show that I'm not so biased against Apple and blinkered that I won't touch their stuff with a bargepole? That I'm not irrationally afraid of Apple stuff that I can't even bare to use it? I'm not using it to "defend my position" at all, I'm demonstrating that I'll buy something because of its practical use, not because it's an iDevice. I also only buy iPods when it comes to music players because from my perspective no one else has bettered their "formula", they do what I want in the way that I like it.

I try not to mention it in such discussions, just to see how quickly the "well you're just jealous that you can't afford Apple" gets thrown about, I've always been curious as to how someone would respond to "I've got multiple iPods and an iPhone and prefer iTunes over anything else for oranising my music".

So why aren't they allowed to call it something else? It's their hardware (in part) that runs their software...?

I'm not saying Apple shouldn't name things however they want, but whatever Apple do name it, it doesn't mean that it's not a PC as well. I'm complaining about people pretending it's not a PC, but something else when it's just that, a computer that's personal.

"Everyone" won't automatially think of a computer running Windows considering most people are barely aware of what an operating system is. Most people are more likely to think "Oh that thing that I use to check my emails and facebook".

Being deliberately argumentative is your spin on it based on your perception, however I'm pointing out that there's no real reason why a Mac isn't a PC, and it's detracting from my point on it in the first place.

Look what this debate is doing to people. :roll eyes: I knew as soon as I read the title that it will be full of angry keyboard bashing people.

I don't think there's any anger involved. If people can be adults about it, I see no problem with a debate about things, it's why Robbo didn't post it in GD because people would have been saying all sorts of unfounded crap about eachother's parents because they hate the brand of computer the other uses.

PDF?

I'll defend any company that I believe is being slated for no reason. Apple are no exception to this, it's good practice to keep information on a forum such as this fair and accurate. Many people won't actually dare to defend them, the hatred is so ridiculous/extreme.

Some people might be jealous, but why is that the first thing you jump to? Because it seems that you think owning Apple stuff is "desirable", "exclusive" and something "special"?

It's not the first thing I jump to, it's just one of the many things that may cause it. Of course it is.

It's not "anyone", it's when (as I've seen you do) people get all defensive over someone being critical of Apple, you're very quick to defend Apple as soon as some one says something "negative". I don't blame people for calling you a fanboy from what I've seen in other friends.

The people that 'hate' Apple on here can never actually provide a good argument as to why, if me calling them out over that makes me a fanboy then so be it. Anyone with half a brain should be able to see that I'm not.

As I said earlier, if you discuss Apple in a positive light, people will brand you a fanboy. It's farcical.

I know you don't find it funny, I do find it funny especially because I've found it to be true (from my own experiences).

I've come across it too, but again, I've seen people do it with all types of phones, especially Android ones.

*Shock as someone might want to show you their new phone* Unthinkable!

You mean to show that I'm not so biased against Apple and blinkered that I won't touch their stuff with a bargepole? That I'm not irrationally afraid of Apple stuff that I can't even bare to use it? You're not afraid of Apple stuff? Good for you!

You'd think they were selling pet crocodiles the way some folk go on... :D

Indeed!

Apple Envy I find it. I know a few people on twitter who loathe Apple just because they're a successful company everyone seemed to be copying. They wanted any other mobile phone except an apple. At present one of them recently tweeted that 'Oh i'm in an apple store in Florida! Oh look at all these sad sick people' - GTFO then!

Countless Hero's, Desires, Driods, and BB's later they are still on the hunt 'for an easy to use phone, with good apps...'. I gave up wasting time with that sort of person.

Around 10years ago it was 'the k3wl' to hate and bash Microsoft. The new cool is to treat Apple in the same manner. Who's next?

I was a hater, pre-2009. Thought Macs were crap etc. Bought my first iPhone and fell in love with it. Then bought a cheap refurb MacBook and fell in love with OSX over Windows, which like most is what I grew up on.

That is funny! And it's true!!
I've had just about every iPod variant (well almost!) and think they're amazing but never used a mac pc.
Perhaps some of the snobby stuff stems from Apple's roots, back when Macs were primarily used by graphic designers etc (and still are to a large degree). I've mentioned on here before that my other half worked in CAD/3DMax and had no opinion on the PC vs Mac subject, stating there was no difference at all - however, many people in her team did and always preferred Apple Mac.
She was easily one of the better artists in her team as well so I the fact she held the opinion of not caring always made me smile.

I am holding out for an iPhone5. But I will still refer to it as just a phone :)

To be honest, I'm totally bored of this and practically all technical discussions. I have Apple gear. Great. I'm not going to evangelise to you about it unless you specifically ask me for technical advice, and even then, I'm probably not going to recommend it if you're so ingrained in MS and Office and so on. That's about the end of it. I'll use my iMac and iPhone and you can use whatever you like.

I am literally struggling to care at this point.

This is something I hear a lot, I have a CAD/Architectural background, and I have friends doing similar things in University, and it's ridiculous how often I and they hear "need a Mac for graphics or design work". I find it incredibly annoying when I hear people say this because of how much of a clue they don't have about anything. Some people seem to think that you literally can't do design work unless it's on a Mac, like Photoshop on Windows is some completely different application that is nothing like the Mac version.

Bizarre how I've coped all all the times using photoshop and CAD applications on Windows...

Of course they're exactly the same, for the most part as funnily enough a big industry standard program like 3DS Max is Windows exclusive for some reason. These people are the types who don't understand what RAM is or does, and are the types to buy Apple computers because of the fashionable image they think it brings them.

I trust you can find the back button easily enough then? :p

I think this is the age old problem of people's opinions and them caring too much about what other people think.

It happens with games consoles.
It happens with phones.
It happens with TVs.
It happens with cars.
It happens with everything.

A small minority get too vocal about how their product is better than anything competing, and then another minority fight back defending their product and it escalates into a petty argument that has no real winner. Eventually any user of a given product becomes labelled.

Even in this thread, there are posters who seem to care just a little bit too much about their side of the argument and just won't drop it.

I own a self-built desktop computer. I own a laptop that runs Windows. I own an iPhone 4. I now recently have come to own a MacBook Pro. I enjoy all of the equipment I have for various reasons.

What I don't give a rats-*** about is what someone thinks about what I own. My purchases are my choice.

I've actually had long arguments with people who say that for any kind of graphic design, you HAVE to use a Mac. I don't believe this to be the case.

Their argument is basically based around the fact that Windows doesn't handle massive image files as easily or smoothly and that it's very unreliable.
