What is 'woke' and why do we use it?

I thought the rules around talking about politics on social media only applied to news readers and political commentators working for the BBC?

Apparently, there's a part of their rules that means it's essentially applied to everyone in a presenting/host role.

In reality, we all know it depends on their level of outreach to the public and whether their views align with the current government. It would barely make the front page if one of the presenters on say countryfile said something political on their Twitter profile.

I'm pretty sure Chris Packham has delved into political stuff on his social media before and didn't face any consequences.

It would be so good if we could just shut down social media for good.

Humanity has suffered greatly.

It's fairly obvious that making strongly worded controversial political statements as a BBC presenter that might alienate parts of your audience is rather silly considering they're forced to pay for a TV license in order to watch TV. It actually risks causing people to cancel their TV license and irreparably damage the BBC as an organisation as a result. Gary Linekar is paid very well but also no one has said he can't have an opinion, rather that strong controversial statements that risk dividing the public would best be avoided. Of course the simple minded folks wish to make it a free speech issue, yet it's obvious that when you're representing your employer you can't just say whatever you want - Gary is essentially representing his employer at all times because he's a public BBC figure - which is tough, yet he is also paid very well as compensation for that.

The people in the middle of the political spectrum (i.e. the vast majority) just watch in despair at the nutters on either extreme.

to wit. Casey Met report and institutional racism branding - Casey using the unqualified term herself, then those that indignantly say the Met must own this (like Abbot for the applause of her constituents) and Met commander rejecting the phrase - the word woke has just become academic.

Linekers benign in comparison - his job isn't reporting the News. (maybe he'll refrain from commenting on the womens uefa prize funding though)

It's woke if you disagree.
It's cancel culture only if you agree.

That clears that up then. It's all just nonsense babble from subjective view points.

This is a lovely thread. Anti-woke feels to me like anti-empathy. I definitely fall into the woke category. I'm worried more about people than economics.
This is why it's a hot topic..

I personally find 'woke' people (as mentioned, those that practice identity based ideologies) are the least empathetic people around...

I can't square how you can selectively apply empathy based on group identity.. My brain is wired to treat everyone as individuals, your group identity comes second and it's as simple as that..

Poor people are poor people and all need help, I don't stop and look at the colour of their skin and make the decision that one colour deserves help and the other doesn't, I'd help them all..

Although I mostly agree, it depends on what the problem is. If the problem is that black women are disproportionately more likely to die during childbirth, the solution invariably needs to address a particular group of people (black women). We can't just ignore or pretend those groups don't exist.

The Dylan Mulvaney controversy continues to hurt Bud Light.

Beer Business Daily reported Sunday that Bud Light’s sales volume for beer sold outside of restaurants and bars–was down 26.1% from a year earlier for the week that ended April 22.

Ouch, they deserve it.. :)

This happens a lot. I think it started in the games community. People would tank a game's reviews and boycott if it was woke lol. Developers changed direction on that one pretty quickly.

Go woke, go broke is the saying

Meanings change all the time. Feminism used to mean fighting for equality, now it means you're a toxic entitled man-hating hag, woke used to mean open-minded, now it means your brain has fallen out along with all sense of reason, a useful idiot to those that want to manipulate the crowd because you don't have two brain cells to rub together.

Hmm I wonder what side of the woke/bigot fence you sit on.

Youve come out as Andrew Tate follower for god sake.

Being woke isn't easy..

A lesson about racism from the Sun. Classy.

His profile is purely from being on the BBC though.

..although why anyone would get their politics from him is beyond me lol

What are you on about. For anyone born before 1980 he was a huge footballing star, golden boot winner and came so damned close to getting England to a WC final. For those born after his career was over he might seem like a fading footballer but to the rest of us he will never be that. The BBC did not make him into the "star" he is today.
