I tend to buy previous gen second hand. I’m currently running a 1070 I paid £150 for about 16 months ago Planning to do the same again when Ampere is fully released and 20 series cards drop in price. I’d find it hard to justify paying more than about £250 for a graphics card.
This is a really good idea

I've put £500 but it'll be more closer to £400. I plan on doing a whole new system build next year so my budget needs to take in account for the whole system. If I was just going to buy the graphics card I would probably be looking at £1000.

I would seriously balk at spending more than £500 on a GPU. I don't think I've ever spent more than £250, so even this would be an effort.

However I want to play FS2020 at 4K60 ultra, so what can I do.
You may want to check out the latest hardware unboxed video :D You'll be out 3090 card and £1400+ for the FPS you're looking for at that res :D

Hardly.

Gpu's hold their price stupidly high second hand.

You have zero idea how they have been used or abused.

Overclocked under water with high volts, etc.

With zero warranty. I got my 1650 super brand new for £140 iirc maybe £150. Its only 30% slower than his out of warranty 1070 plus it runs cooler and uses less power.

The days of buying second hand gpu's is gone and that's from someone who has bought the vast majority of their gpu's second hand.

That extra 30% power isn't worth having no warranty, all the additional heat and power consumption vs a modern card.

yer, I don't think Cyberpunk will be as hardware hungry as that but it shows we are starting to need powerful hardware now.. tho a dx12 update will help with flight simulator.

That's also why I'm still staying away from 4k

One as in singular available to one buyer only?

If so that doesn't mean it was ever priced at £450 if only one person on the planet could get it.
A weekly sale, pretty sure it was £449.99 though it could be up to 459.99. I put £450 in when tracking prices though

It wasn't a crap blower one either, it was one I would actually consider buying, prolly a zotac one

It was £559.98 down to £549.98 with cashback 2 years ago.

It also ran extremely hot 84c at stock and loud with its crappy cooling. It would hit 84c within 2 minutes engage throttling and stay there until you stopped using it. So performance wasn't optimal.

It was never £450

Agreed.

Even completely broken cards go for hundreds. I've seen 2080Ti's go for £300-400 that dont even work at all. I mean sure to the right person it can be fixed but still anything could be wrong.

I would only go with 2nd hand if it has decent warranty such as EVGA, and is from a decent seller i.e not been abused via mining. One reason my 2080Ti has upgraded 10yrs warranty. Adds to the resale value somewhat.

Otherwise money differences i dont care. For my main rig i'd rather have a brand new card with warranty and pay a little extra.

It's not what I've got written down, though I guess I'm £100 up after getting a 2070super for £450, always kicked myself for not getting similar performance 2 years earlier, prolly ham fingers here then

Changed mine from £750 to £500 as I don’t game as much these days, about 8 hours a week.

£500 probably won’t get me much of an upgrade from my 1080Ti, so we’ll see what happens.

The 2070 is a better card overall and the 1080ti decent ones were at minimum £600 and all the way up to £1200 over their lifetime. Averaging around £750. The crap zotac for £550 is best avoided.

Ive got a 2070 super too and got it for £440 on black Friday. I had a 1080 before. I've had 10 gpu's over the past 4 years and the top 2 favourites are my current 2070 super and 1650 super. They run so cool and so efficient and are so powerful for the money paid.

I had a 970 for £230 5 years ago, was looking at upgrading to 1080ti a few years ago but didn't, then got a freesync monitor 18 months ago, then went for a sapphire vega 56 last year, it borked after a week, limped along with 970 till red devil 5700xt, that borked after 2 weeks, went to rma for over a month, full refund, got the sapphire nitro, despite the reviews comparing them I found the nitro inferior, so stomped an extra £50 for a palit 2070 super jetstream, very happy with card and nvidias drivers lol

That's the card I have.

It's the coolest running card I've ever owned bar some low end stuff.

It's actually really impressive how cool it runs compared to the 1080 it replaced. It's silent too. I also managed a nice overclock however it makes no real world difference so I dialled it back to make sure it was completely safe.

Wouldn't say the second hand market is dead, I bought a vega 56 for 140 quid delivered to my door, runs everything brilliantly even at 1440p. Msi so had some warranty remaining, nothing really comes close to it in that price bracket.

I *could* upgrade it when new cards arrive, I know I'm not hitting 144fps on all titles but every still feels really smooth. Being under water it's an even bigger expense buying a brand new block too.

I agree, 2nd hand cards can go for crazy money, especially Nvidia.

Extended EVGA warranty isn't transferable. I saw it on the EVGA site. Not sure if it's a new thing?
