1. What have you achieved that we didn't give you
2. Your successes are all ours anyway. You're us, just dirty convict versions.

If all we will have here are people who are going to criticise what they are then OcUK seems to be full of people who are too selfish to realise what their nation does for them, or the advantages they have... how about we have a little positivity in this thread.
No need to get all hoity toity. We're all allowed our own opinions.

We still lead in science and business. We still have the biggest financial centre in Europe. We still have the 4th largest economy. All of these present things to be proud of are as a result of today's hard workers. If you can't be proud of that then what can you be proud of.

Why should you be proud of the works of others just because they happened to work for the country you were born in?

Im proud to be English when I hear foreigners from tons of different nations saying how well respected and well liked the English are in their home countries.

Im proud to be English when im talking to someone and they are all down because they assume im American...Then they smile and perk up when they hear im English.

Its pride in the country, not personal pride...and yes, pride can apply to the works of others.

Why is it that the Welsh for example are so proud of their identity when there is **** all there?
England is many times better and all we have is cynics.
I am English and i'm proud of it. History, is something to do with it because that history is your family's lives before your time. It's in your blood.

If I were to carry a flag, it would be the Union Jack and not St. Georges, because I see myself as British.

Can half of these people here actually admit that if they were in another country and someone else was slagging England off that you wouldn't defend your home?
England is your family, it is your culture, it's your way of life.

People all too often find it easier to focus on the bad things rather than the good. I'm proud to know that there are decent people in this country, despite the concensous that i'm wrong. I'm proud that there are still people willing to die for their country.

I'm proud to be who I am.

Anyone who isn't proud to be themselves is either a liar or an emo.

I was born in England, Im of British nationality, yet im not proud to be British.

National pride is possibly the most idiotic thing going, be admiring of acts done by people within your country (that you were born into totally by chance) but proud?? What right have you to be proud of acts done by people other than yourself???

If i was to invent something that boosted the UK's economy by 100% then i would indeed by proud of what i did, i would be happy that i had helped my country, but am i proud of my country? No because I have no right to be.

I DO believe this country does things very well and i feel very priveledged to have been born here but im not proud, not in the true sense of the word.

Pride is an abused word in this context, i've always thought so.

excuse me, was that aimed at me?

If so, i dont enjoy being referred to as a "stain" if you dont mind.

Look up the meaning of pride in the oxford dictionary if you want. The use given to it by bald headed idiots all lagered up down the local wrapped up in a St georges flag is incorrect.

This country is fantastic, the NHS is a brilliant idea that works far better than it should, the police force is still one of the best in the world, our secret service(s?) have a very good reputation as do our armed forces. We may be taxed a lot but we can also afford to be taxed whilst still leading rich and full lives.

If your suggesting i dont like this country you are vastly mistaken, what i dont like is stupid mis use of a word which in reality should only really have any place when describing something you took part in.. or thats how i see it.

I dont really care what you enjoy mate...:dunno: Perhaps those of us who are proud of this country dont enjoy being labelled as idiots by you?

It also doesnt matter how you see the word should be used...It is correct usage to say pride in ones country.. Perhaps you should check the OED?

Regardless of what some may believe, this is not a world without borders..We live in a nation state and as such, the actions of everyone else in that nation state reflect upon us and are associated with us...That includes the good things as well as the bad.

Of course, nobody ever flips this on its head do they...The negative aspects that have been expressed in this thread..They are always associated with us..Nobody ever says why should I feel bad about something just because it happens in a country I was born in by chance?

I have to be ashamed of the bad things this country has done, but im not allowed to be proud of the good things?

you dont have to be ashamed either?? Exactly the reason im astonised when people from our generation who live in Germany feel ashamed for the acts of the Nazi's. Why do they?

Its only a land mass, we label them because humans are terratorial like animals.

Anyway i dont want to get into an argument as this one started with name calling and i dont intend to get involved whilst semi drunk :)

Well everyone else seems to think I have to be ashamed...I dont feel ashamed but I acknowledge the bad things, just as I acknowledge the good...and yes I feel proud of my countrys achievements.

Its not only a land mass. In case you missed it, theres this little thing called politics which carves up this whole world...Im sure grossly simplifying things to make your point must be nice, but this is the real world. In the real world, humans associate in groups and yes, they are territorial...thats reality. You cant change that.

In an imaginary world without borders, where everybody loved everybody else equally, you would have a point about pride of country being silly....but we dont live in that world.

^^ Not even that, I am proud of what we have achieved as a human race, sure we have done our share of bad things, but they are nothing compared to how much we have acomplished.

Should I not be proud of my ancestors for what they achieved? I was born and grew up in the same place that ideas like democracy and athleticism where conceived, to name just two, how can anyone not be proud of that?

What makes me proud is:

* Having Royalty
* We have a huge history of ruling the world.

What makes you proud?

I am proud of what we once were but not what we are now and are becoming.

Our country is now fractured to the core and we cannot even stand united behind a single flag anymore as it may offend. If we can't/ aren't allowed to even unify behind, and be proud of our flag, what hope have we got?

If we had gone into WW2 as we are now, we would probably have surrendered within weeks.

This "country" is lost in my opinion. :(

No it doesn't. You can realise that you're fortunate to have been born in England without being proud of it.

You should have pride in the oportunity and nurture that have become intrinsic parts of your personality, which have resulted from your time in our great nation...
