What "man jobs" have you done today?

Yep, that low cost area in the Channel Islands where grotty houses come with swimming pools.
Do you just enjoy making a tit of yourself in every thread?
Looked like a dump in central Glasgow from the third pic so wondered if he'd lost his mind with spending any cash. Makes sense now I've been reminded it was the pool house!

Nothing wrong with being a tit - I'm not so tightly wound I'd take myself seriously

I wish the view was that nice in Glasgow. I can see a prison from my upstairs rotten dormer!

Glad you took it in the spirit it was intended!

Hoiked this in to the boot with the aid of a passing stranger and my O/H at one end.

We collected a 2 column one approx 1m x 800 a year or so ago which, being much taller, allowed for a little purchase so I could squat down, tilt it to one side and hug/lift it on to the boot on my own.

But this one being three columns, so short and much wider was near on impossible. I'm not weak either but functional strength pls respond.

The builders can get it out tomorrow :p

MDF/wood to slide and then ratchet straps to secure it down for the journey home.

Almost a month later (RIP fuel economy), with the help of 3 builders (one on each corner), this moved closer to its final resting place in the un-finished kitchen.

A similar height 3 column radiator with 15 sections is approx 145kg empty. Makes sense given how my O/H of around 50kg struggled to pick up her end when we collected it :p Offft.

Guess you won't be wall mounting it then  . Didn't realise they were so heavy, dread to think how much when full of water 200kgs?

I want to build a tiled hearth for my (non functioning) fire place. Just to make a bit more of a feature for it as I think jt looks weird without a hearth.

What’s the best thing to tile onto? I’m assuming concrete backer board? It’s just going to be sitting on top of laminate. I don’t plan to secure the hearth but imagine it’ll be heavy enough that’s not a problem.

Something like this?

Perfect for tiling on.

Guys,

Any advice for building some gates? I need to renew the side access gates as they are really falling apart. They have a top beam which is sagging too. One of the brackets has simply corroded to nothing.

I am thinking it shouldn't be too hard to get replacement wood from Wickes and not something up myself. But what wood? So that it doesn't turn to mush after X years? Or should I be doing something different entirely?

Also access is annoying - you can't get in the side gate without coming through the house and unlocking from the rear, so I need a more appropriate lock.

Thanks!

Yep, that'll be fine. Whatever you cut that board to size with will blunt fairly quickly so don't use your best saw.

Also by the time you've added adhesive and tiles it'll be quite heavy so I wouldn't complete it too far from where you intend to settle it.

No need to fix it in to place, it'll be heavy enough not to move.

Still interested on anyone's thoughts w.r.t. this.

Threw up a hanging basket earlier:

Rusty window handle snapped in the bathroom so removed one screw and thought I was removing the second screw, because it was turning without much issue, but the head just twisted off. The bolt's also rusted in the Window, but rotates fine, so I've been trying to get that out along with a screw that needle nose pliers won't grip :(

Anyone had this issue before and got any tricks I can try?

I hated my old desk, some cheap tat from Amazon that I've been putting up with for a couple of years. I can't be bothered to find a pic with all my stuff on but here's one I took just before putting it on Facebook.

My office is tiny, so the short side took up valuable space and it ended up as a dumping ground. I've been pondering which desk to get for many months and finally settled on this one from Etsy (excuse dirty wall).

Custom made to my size with cable holes at the rear. I have some under desk trays coming in the week so please excuse the cabling, it will be fixed.

Just finished putting it all together, and dragging most things back into the office after pretty much emptying it to make room.

I've considered one of those external locks with the keypad on the outside for my gate because of this as well... Should be just as secure as a bolt TBH

My folks have had one of these on their gate for a good 15-20 years now. Probably similar to most in that you'd have to unlock from the back, I remember it being quite handy.

As for wood, I'd have thought most treated wood would have been fine. Might need to paint/oil it every few years to keep it in good condition. Wood normally falls apart when it's not looked after.
