What "man jobs" have you done today?

@ChrisD. Where did you get the desk from? Or did you make it? Looks like the style I’d be after for my office space.

They were great, answered questions and cut holes where I wanted. They'll pre-drill for an under tray etc.

The only thing is the desk is not 100% level, due to the wood. If you're a pro gamer this wouldn't be suitable, but mine is fine for my level.

Chaps - whats the crack on insulating under the floor? Can I just grab 90mm insulation boards and go at it?

I have noticed that stuff is expensive so I am thinking I might scavenge Facebook Marketplace for a few months grabbing what I can.

Someone has listed some 2.4x1.2 + 1.2x0.6 150mm EcoTerm for £50... presumably that is a fraction of brand new?

When I was looking for insulation for the office this place seemed to get suggested a lot https://www.secondsandco.co.uk/

I ended up buying new from https://materialsmarket.com/ along with the other sheet material I needed and was quite well priced as long as you are buying enough to bring the delivery costs down.

After my fan being left open for about a year I finally put a cover on it.... Unfortunately realised its a bit lopsided because I've put it level and the ceiling is very out of level (it's also only hanging from the top left side bolts) any issues /easy ways to rectify?

I want to replace worktops for quartz (and hob to a wider gas hob) and also realised the fan is just off 700mm height to the hob but I imagine not a massive issue if the height is just shy of regs/install manual? Im pretty sound with my plumber and he's coming to sort another job sob

Jet washed the decking after brushing in the decking cleaner, then removed all green growth from a shaded concrete path.

Serviced a dropper post + cleaned & serviced two mountain bikes.

Cooked a roast and helped make banana cake.

I seriously doubt they’d get their tape measure out unless it was obviously too low.

Yesterday was a real eye-opener for me. My parents are having their house re-wired starting tomorrow. My dad called me on Saturday evening and asked if I could help with a few things preparing the house. Now, they have been aware that this is going to happen for 3 months and they even had a false start when the electrician had to postpone at fairly short notice. I could not believe how much there was still to do!

I went round at noon thinking I would just be needed to help do a final run to the storage place (my dad had already done 8 estate loads), move some heavy furniture and put some plastic sheeting over things. No. Despite all the stuff they had taken to the storage place, you wouldn't think they had started. There was junk *everywhere*. It was complete chaos. I always knew my parents don't like to throw things away but yesterday was truly shocking to me, I've realised my parents are borderline hoarders. As a result they can't clean effectively and there was thick dust everywhere, I had to wear my mask (asthma) and wipe everything down before moving. Even easy things like glassware hadn't been packed away, they could have done at weeks ago.

The highlight, in a long list of things that went wrong, was the carpet in my old bedroom. For whatever reason they had put down office style carpet tiles after I moved out, and it turns out they were stuck to the floor boards and wouldn't budge. They could have tried to lift one at any point in the past 3 months to see what was involved but they leave it to the day before, on a Sunday when no shops were open, so we couldn't even go out and buy a product to try and get the glue off. I think the floorboards in that room are a write-off to be honest. They even bought the wrong adhesive plastic to protect the carpets with so it wouldn't stick, and we had to improvise with bits of plastic.

I think we got just about enough done that the electrician can make a start, but if I hadn't been available to help it would have been very different. I got home at 11pm exhausted and vented to my wife for an hour before going to bed. What a terrible day.

Reminds me when my wife had a go at me for packing away cutlery/glasses etc. as part of the house move about a week before. "It isn't a priority!! You haven't even put a dent in it!!" - but it really is death by a thousand cuts and it is all needs to be sorted.

Hopefully they see it as an opportunity to cut back/sell some stuff. Fair play to them for doing it "properly" tho.

I have found the only thing that will make you dump all your rubbish is to move house -not once but twice in 2 years.

Unfortunately after another 13 years the wifes stuff has multiplied 10 fold and it was all a tight fit then.

I was lucky we were renting while I did this place up -just walk out and leave the mess till next day. .

Guys,

Any advice for building some gates? I need to renew the side access gates as they are really falling apart. They have a top beam which is sagging too. One of the brackets has simply corroded to nothing.

I am thinking it shouldn't be too hard to get replacement wood from Wickes and not something up myself. But what wood? So that it doesn't turn to mush after X years? Or should I be doing something different entirely?

Also access is annoying - you can't get in the side gate without coming through the house and unlocking from the rear, so I need a more appropriate lock.

Thanks!
You want pressure treated wood

I made one a good few years ago with example photos here in old house

You should use end grain sealer also, which I'll hold my hands up and say I didn't bother! Definetly should to allow expansion at sides.

Those pictures are spot on actually - the wall situation with next door is identical. At the moment some 2x4's (ish) are bolted to the retaining wall (rather than being 'in' the wall). I think I may do the fence at the rear of the garden as that has some 3x3 posts that I can salvage - replacing with much bigger posts - and then rest part of the post on the neighbors wall to help sturdy it up a bit.

Gate-wise I've paused a bit as I really need to focus on getting the radiators sorted for the plumber in 2 weeks... thinking if I can expose everything he may be willing to do them at the same time.

Rusty window handle snapped in the bathroom so removed one screw and thought I was removing the second screw, because it was turning without much issue, but the head just twisted off. The bolt's also rusted in the Window, but rotates fine, so I've been trying to get that out along with a screw that needle nose pliers won't gri
the handle spindle doesn't have any play to allow it to be replaced/inserted in a new handle without dismantling mechanism ?
otherwise I'd probably try and dremmel it / drill a big gole to access fractured bolt - after you have checked from another window/web that you really know you will not damage metal that is part of the window

I've some patio doors where broken spindle was pulled further out and wedged in hole in handle, you just have to remember to pull door closed w/o handle.
