What "man jobs" have you done today?

Had 2 blokes around today to quote for consumer unit replacements... the quotes are just outrageous.

One lad wanted £425 but threw a fit when I asked him about an outdoor socket on a radial (I wanted the uplift but he assumed I was asking for it for 'free'), one at £510 quoted unseen, and then some proper daft ones coming in at like £700. The latest chap has just quoted £1170!!!

@LuckyBenski do you have a recommendation for a sparks?
Is that just labour? I want a new consumer unit (again) but RCBOs ain't cheap!

400 quid is cheap to replace a fuse board

Had mine moved pre-lockdown and that came in at £500 with no extras.

One I had done sept 2021, consumer unit was on the outside of the building in a wooden box :(

The guy is expensive (for reference) but his work is impecable and I usually can get him to do work within a week or so :)

That's helpful thank you. The youngest lad of all the ones to come out and quote was the first to identify the gas wasn't earthed and the water earthing was too small. Annoying none of the mega $ lads spotted that!

Just make sure you will get a Building Regulations Certificate of Compliance or Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate which is now a requirement and helps push the price up for us :(

Yep, years ago I had a new CU installed by a local guy who was just going independent, lovely guy, mega neat work... Job done and he walked away, I didn't realise the difference between "work done by a qualified professional" and "Part P form provided".

Had my plumbing error sorted by the plumber. Nice chap and educated me on a few things!

Carpets being fitted next week. Sanded and painted skirting boards ahead of this. Fixing wobbly floorboards where I can. Anything else worth capitalising on whilst the carpet is up?

Paid £590 (cash) to have an existing consumer unit moved to an adjacent wall recently, sort of a mates rate. Included T&E extensions and other materials and long temporary tails to the meter as this was carried out ahead of it also being moved. Ceilings were already down so fairly straight forward.

If this is just a straight swap and not a move those prices are steep.

So had a young lad out yesterday who said I should upgrade the bonding on my water main too. None of the "professionals" with outrageous quotes noticed this.

His quote just arrived - £1700!!!

---

I took a punt on two more lads, one has just arrived -- I have a strong man crush on him, and he even gifted me a double outdoor socket that he said if I mount and run the 2.5mm (he even offered to give me a length of cable) he can connect it up.

Fingers crossed he doesn't quote me redic. He verbally mentioned between 600-650.

Enough internet for me today :D

Have you had over 4 quotes just to change a fuse board? You're part of the reason costs are high, just increasing trade overheads getting quote after quote.

Haha yeah I share the blame in that. I am happy to pay a fair and honest price, but right now I am getting £400 or £1200 or £1700. I am looking for £650!

hmmh £500 - Parents in 30 year old estate, none of which originally fitted with RCBO's, surprised that electricians have not touted for business, and told them they really need to upgrade,
leastaways mine has tripped to notify on electric iron, coffee machine issues, and could be a life saver

If I were having a new fuse board would be interested to get some fuse blocks/rcbo's that can wirelessly transmit real time energy use.
