What Next for 2020? Volcanoes of Course!

Didn't Etna blow today? It's normally spewing smoke and gas anyway, but was told it's spewing some lava too. Seems it has had over 50 eruptions this year and has grown 30m

We need to tax volcanoes and turn them green this is contributing to climate change!

Volcanoes reduce global warming. Something about the particles reflecting sunlight and cooling the earth. There is actually something called the Pinatubo Strategy, about creating a huge man made volcanic eruption as a last ditch attempt at cooling the planet. It makes me think of the scorched skies in The Matrix.

Mount Tambora and similar eruptions around that period caused widespread surface cooling in the 1800s. Sadly that is then used by some to try and make it look like global warming started from that period as if that period was normal temperatures. Maybe well meaning but it is misleading if not lies none the less.

When I was a kid I wanted to be a volcanologist.

tbh, I’d love to be a tornado chaser too. Weather and natural disasters are fascinating, albeit very sad and destructive

2 of my most favourite films are still Dante’s peak and Twister.

Couple of bigger detonations from the volcano just now - one of them threw quite a lot of stuff out. Still a lot of pressure in the system.

Is there going to be a massive collapse that causes a tidal wave to wipe out the eastern side of the US?

No, there could possibly be a landslip if the fissures develop more along the supposed weak spot but the amount of land mass that could fall into sea would result in waves heights similar to that of a hurricane by the time it reaches the US

Unlikely - it would need an eruption somewhere in the region of 50x bigger than this and/or a big earthquake probably like 7.8+ in the right spot for a chance of that happening and even then the landslide would have to go in a pretty specific way.

There seems to be quite a lot going on underneath with this volcano though - I wouldn't rule out a bigger event yet - but not apocalyptic scale.

Even wave heights similar to a hurricane, which are more likely in the probable worse case scenarios, would be significant with the power of a tsunami behind them because of the larger displacement of water. EDIT: Though I suspect from a source like a landslide vs a whole plate moving it is closer to a normal wave end of the scale than a full on tsunami.

Increasingly forceful blasts from the fissures - I'm guessing that isn't a good sign.

EDIT:

Increasingly energetic bursts of gas, etc.

Putting on quite a dramatic show at the moment.

I was watching it today and it looked dead, I guess it's all hidden behind the smoke so it's only visible at night when the heat lights it all up, also I don't know what I expected but it's a whole lot like the Kilauea fissure eruptions

It died down a bit earlier in the day though obviously at night it shows more plainly. Quite similar to Kilauea but seems more energetic - at times there have been some quite percussive blasts from it.
