What Next for 2020? Volcanoes of Course!

I wonder how bad it's got to get before they have to evacuate the island. Its hard to tell which way the winds blowing regarding the smoke ash landing.

It has punched through a new vent - that thing is boiling right now - proper Lord of the Rings look on the Reuters cam.

My Spanish is rusty so I'm just going off the pictures but he's saying if the lava goes 45m deep in the ocean, there will be a 500m tsunami

If the lava builds up over the steeper underwater slopes it risks a collapse which can produce local tsunamis (only a few miles around) 1-5m high. Most of the island has coastal cliffs much higher than that so only a few places would it cause a problem.

Seems to be another influx of magma into the system today so probably this is far from over and could get more dramatic yet.

We honeymooned in Hawaii big island. One morning we too a helicopter from Kona to Hilo at first light around the south of the islands including hovering at the edge of the active lava in the volcano :D You could see the small lakes of red lava bubbling away. The airport in Kona is built on a lavaflow. It takes about 150 years for an area covered in lavaflow to repopulate with local tree life. So the island in La Palma is going to be a cinder for the remainder of our lives.

La Palma volcano increasing intensity again (chucking 100s of lumps of molten lava as big as cars 100s of feet into the air) - don't like the look of the earthquake plots.

My Mum and dad are going out to Tenerife in a few weeks, this is concerning

Don't be concerned, it was a joke it says nothing about tsunami I was hoping someone would have pulled me up on it lol, I think it's saying that the lava can produce new land mass upto around 500m from the current coastline

The volcano is still pretty active though 3 weeks in and reports are that it's not going to end any time soon, depending on the wind direction the air quality in Tenerife might not be so great but that's probably the worse effect your parents will see of this volcano

I wonder who gets to claim the new land which is being created? I'm guessing the government will have it and sell it off eventually.

It touches on it - but there is a real risk that if the lava pushing into the ocean builds out far enough it could reach where the bottom goes down steeply and produce an unstable structure sticking out over the deeper bottom which could fall into the depth producing a moderate local tsunami.

Quite active tonight - looks like it is generating some lightning at times. Judging by the earthquake plots looks like there will be another evolution of activity in a couple of days probably though I couldn't guess at what.

EDIT: If I read/translated the information correctly - there were chunks up to the size of a small house being chucked up to a mile high tonight.
