What Restaurant did you eat at last night?

McDonald's counts? :p if so, fillet o fish burger.

Sakushi in Sheffield city center is pretty nice, I love their takoyakis, I should eat there more often, one of the best sushi places I've been to.

Not that I ate at a restaurant last night, but I am looking for recommendations! Just booked tickets to go see Matilda at Cambridge Theatre at the end of the month and looking for a couple of places nearby for eats (birthday treat). We'll be staying in Kensington, so some tips for places both there and in Covent Garden / Soho would be much appreciated! And preferably not too harsh on the wallet! :p:D

Matilda is great!
Covent Garden and Soho (I prefer Soho) both have a huge number of restaurants to chose from. A lot are aimed at the tourist but there are a good number that serve great food depending on the type of food you're after.

You'll find branches of some of these restaurants in both Soho and Covent Garden.
Flat Iron serves superb steak for £10
Hawksmoor for superb steak for more than £10
Bao for great Taiwanese, if you can stand the wait for a seat.
Blacklock for good meat
Barrafina for great tapas style plates
Pizza Pilgrims for great pizza
Honest Burgers for burgers, obviously
Not been, but Dishoom apparently serves great Indian food
Big Easy for good American BBQ, although iffy service
Franco Manca, more pizza for decent price

Loads more to chose from, and if your budget is higher, then plenty of more up market places too.

The queues for the Bao place are ridiculous! I walked past on the way to SAID Chocolate (highly recommend for an incredible hot chocolate) and there was a queue on both sides of the street!

+1 Dishoom - great Indian 'street food' style food in a nice a setting.

I went to Talli Joe in Covent Garden last night, it's Indian half plates/tapas. They recommend 3 plates each, but we found that to be too much in the end. Food was spot on.

Here are a few restaurants I have eaten at during my recent travels:

San Fran - The Cheesecake Company. Don't bother with this one, the food is average and the service is awful.
San Fran - Hog Island Oyster Company. Fantastic seafood and relaxed service looking out across the bay. Deffo worth trying.
San Fran - Blowfish Sushi. Really tasty sushi. Probably not the best I have ever had but delicious nevertheless. A quirky place with a great atmosphere. Service was perfect. Only downside was sports TV but you seem to get this everywhere in the US.
San Fran - New England Lobster Market Eatery. Super mega fantastic seafood eats at this relaxed and informal place. Service is good.

Vancouver - Tuc Craft Kitchen. A fantastic place for eats and drinks. Amazing food, great drinks and especially good service. Here is the 30 day dry-aged beef ribeye with marrowbone sauce and sweet potato chips:

Shirley (Massachusetts) - The Phoenix Bar and Grill. Amazing seafood stew and great local beers. Service a bit slow.

Mellieha (Malta) - The Hilltop Restaurant. Blown away by this place, we went three times in a week. Food was sublime and service was exceptional (except for the new youngster who was nervy and dropped a glass and spilled some drinks). Here are a few of their dishes:

Rabbit ravioli (starter):

Mellieha (Malta) - Il Mithna. Pretty good food but the waiter was full of BS. We have a Spanish Armagnac... err ok.
Mellieha (Malta) - Bouquet Garni. Superb food and service. Outstanding seafood. I had skate and she had shark. Highly recommended.

Mdina (Malta) - Adelina. Super-fresh seafood cooked simply in a rustic Italian style. Utterly nom.

That wagyu looks really, er, appetising :p;) Looks like a nice selection.

Been meaning to try this place. Would you recommend over Dishoom?

For bJn you could also try Polpo on Cambridge Circus which is good italian small plates. Don't bother trying to get into the Soho branch, it'll be rammed (as will most no-reservations places in Soho). Especially Dishoom! I walk past Dishoom on St. Martin's Lane every night and by about 6.30pm there's normally a queue of 20-odd people. Even in the rain. Quite a few people have taken to TripAdvisor to suggest they actually "manage" the queue -- i.e. leave tables empty inside to keep a constant queue outside. I can totally believe that as I've turned up at 4pm on a Sunday afternoon only to be told it's a 40min wait!

Trying to list restaurants off the top of my head in Soho/CG is pretty hard, there's too many! But I'll add Tredwells and Homeslice Pizza for another two totally different options. Homeslice will be a queue scenario also, I'm afraid. There's also Burger and Lobster in Soho, not sure if you can book. Or Zelman Meats in St. Anne's Court. Koya or Tonkotsu if you want noodles. I'd better stop now... :o

I've not been to Dishoom to make the comparison unfortunately. I've always been put off by the queues outside. I did find Talli Joe to be very very nice though, everything we had was lovely and fresh and tasted great. Particularly enjoyed the Halwai ki Mutter Kachori and the Chicken 21. The Kale Chaat deserves mention too, never had kale like it before, was lovely and crispy.

Well we ended up at Hawksmoor Seven Dials after the theatre. Lovely setting, lovely atmosphere, great staff and fantastic food, so thanks for the recommendation! She loved it so much she wants to know if I can propose again so we can go back!

Also ate at Theo's Simple Italian at Hotel Indigo in Kensington the night before. Quite basic Italian food but incredibly tasty, decent selection of wine to compliment it too!

No problem, glad you enjoyed it, and congrats :)!

You said "not too hard on the wallet" but went to Hawksmoor? Ohhh-kaaay.. :p Congrats!

Bodeans Tower Bridge. Haven't been for a few months and it's always a decent option for meat and beer. Not up with the better BBQ restaurants but still had some tasty ribs, burnt ends, chicken & pulled pork :).

Friday lunch - Red Dog Saloon, Soho.
Decent burger, fries ok, service poor.

Friday evening - Restaurant Sat Bains, Nottingham.
Bizarre location for the restaurant, but it is in lovely grounds.
We had the the 10 course taster menu with the additional Great British Menu egg course, along with matching wines.
Some lovely dishes although the 3 sweet courses were the standout ones of the evening.
The food and wine matching was some of the best we've ever had, spot on for every course. Service was also superb.
Breakfast the following morning was also fantastic. Delicious Muesli followed by a lovely full English.

Saturday evening - MeatUp Grill, Wandsworth Town.
Fantastic slow cooked and smoked pork rib to start, and then beef rib for main. The burger was quite plain but still tasty. The skin on chips were superb, the fries were just fries.
Big portions!

I wish I had researched places to eat in Vancouver before i went a couple of years ago. That looks really nice, I would never had seen it despite walking up and down that road several times!

Restaurant Sat Bains is pretty much top of my list of restaurants I want to eat at. I really must give them a call and make a booking.

I always knew this restaurant good but had no idea it holds 2 Michellin Stars! The people who have had the veg alternative 7/10 course tasting menus are full of praise about how amazing it was (on TripAdvisor). I'm definitely adding it to my list!

I hadn't heard of this place, so I googled it, and discovered it's in Nottingham.
While I have nothing against Nottingham, it's not a place that figures largely in this Londoner's life.
I can't imagine going up there just to check on a restaurant, no matter how much the restaurant is bigged up on here.
If I'm ever in the Midlands, somewhere in the region of Leicester or Nottingham, I hope that I remember the name of the place, and I get the opportunity to check it out.
Another place I rarely find myself, is Warsaw, Poland, certainly less than Nottingham, but I'd definitely rush back to Dom Polski, (Poland House), if I was there, duck roasted with apples, served on plum sauce, mmm.
Last Friday, Juillet Quatorze, was Bastille Day, I took my wife to Bellanger, Islington Green to celebrate the National Day of the little bit of my blood that stems from France.
Encouraged by 4 or 5 glasses of Lanson champagne, I ordered a dozen escargots instead of my regular 6 to start.
When my main arrived, Choucroute d'Alsacienne; ham hock, montbélier sausage, ham and garlic sausage, on pickled cabbage, I really struggled, as good as it was.
I had to give up and ask for a doggy bag, (great lunch on Saturday).
Kaffee Kirsch, and a balloon glass of Armagnac made a good end to the night in Bellanger.
Vive La République, et l'Angleterre aussi!
