What Restaurant did you eat at last night?

Got her youngest to agree to come back from Leeds for it. I had to offer to pay for her ("I'm just a skint student"), but at least we are going.

Edit: St James' cheese to finish... is there a better cheese at the end of summer? It changes character through the year but is deffo at its best around harvest time. Maker here and buy it here.

Good stuff, hows the usual menu vs the taster menus you've linked to?

EDIT - Actually i've just seen they're not "taster menus" as such, but are a collab with local businesses. I like that. No wonder you went with the Vegan night given it's in partnership with a wine shop :p

Rumbled :o:cool: Vegan wines too.

I've not dined there before, although the evening menu looks great. I usually hit it up for brunch, not because they do fabulous sourdough/avo/eggs/bacon/wild mushrooms etc, but because there is a brunch cocktail list. A brunch there usually starts with an Espresso Martini, then a Mimosa to wash down the food, and into the Hemingway Daiquiris and Rhubarb Negronis until mullered.

There many places in Lancaster to make it worth a visit?

I used to visit some friends at Uni there, but that's ~15 years ago now and i've not really been since, and the places i visited then are very different to where i'd want to go now! Wondering whether it's worth jumping on the train one day when we're free to head for food/drinks.

Surprisingly few, I'm afraid. If you like Malaysian or authentic Chinese food, there is a no frills place called the Noodle House on Common Garden Street run by a really friendly Malay Chinese family. We use this more than any other place here. There is a massive Oriental Supermarket downstairs too, so be ready to buy loads for your kitchen. The only other worth a mention is Sun Pizza (Sun Street) but it is currently under refurb. Best pizzas around, amazing starters... This chef understands seasoning. Not much else really. I imagine the Quarterhouse is good. Don't be tempted by QSF, it is mediocre at best.

Ah probably not worth the trip then. Although my wife does love Chinese food. Many places for decent drinks/beer? Although i'm asking all this and i think we're booked up until around October with various things so i'll have forgotten everything by then!

Preston is slowly getting a little better, but it's taking it's sweet time! Then obviously there's the bigger issue of the standard of people who actually visit Preston :(

Would've been nice to have another option using the train rather than always heading into Manchester.

I like the two for one cocktails at Turtle Bay in Preston. Food is average but drinks are spot on. Made a right mess of my ankle on a three inch kerb after my last session there. EVerybody inside was laughing :( I like Northcote but it is very expensive.

Edit: in fact you should try the felafel man with a cart just in the square down from Turtle Bay, his fare is the best tasting best value in P-Town.

Coco Tan in Nottingham. First time I have been to a Vietnamese, though I love SE Asian food in general, and I was thoroughly impressed. The quality was very good, presentation excellent and price was very reasonable.

Going back with my partner this Friday :)

Also went to a Korean in York a little while back, Oshibi Korean bistro & BBQ, very impressed with that too.

Went to Maneki Ramen in Worcester.

Sides - Pork Belly and Chicken Karaage

I would say, the Pork Belly Cubes….amazing little things, very soft to the point that you can eat it without teeth. Chicken Karaage was good, not super amazing. I would say it's something I can do at home easy enough but it is done with the right cut of meat.

The ramen is very decent, it's real homemade broth, burnt garlic oil, authentic type noodles for the Hakkata style (thin) and all the toppings are correct and no weird fusion thing going on here which I like. The egg is done right, it's marinated but if i am being picky….the egg could have been marinated longer, another 24hrs wouldn't be a problem. They probably only marinated from this morning to be honest judging from the colour. The broth could be more salty, which means the tare wasn't salty enough in the first place.

The pork piece they give is wrapped and cut in the wrong direction, so when you bit into it, the grain of the tissue is in the wrong direction and doesn't come away from the teeth as easily.

8/10, I would recommend and go back.

Went to the Dinner by Heston at the Mandarin Oriental yesterday. The whole experience was absolutely fantastic. We had their 4 course set meal offer with wine pairing and every course was exceptional.

The courses were the hay smoked Salmon, the Meat Fruit, Duck with turnip and tipsy cake.

Can heartily recommend it for a fine dining experience 10/10.

Speaking of ramen, I'm so stoked that not-only do we have a Tonkotsu near us, but there's now a Kanada-Ya opening right down the road. Best ramen in London and I'll be blessed to have one right outside my office, and now one a 15min walk from home

We were there a few weeks back. I can't disagree with the 10/10.

I had meat fruit, pork chop then tipsy cake. The meat fruit was even better than I remember it, the bread was previously just grilled but these days it's cooked in some sort of fat so it's even tastier than it was before.

Went to Morito in Hackney the other evening,North African/Spanish tapas vibe. Really nice but a bit expensive for what are small plates

I’ve never been to Morito, but it’s worth remembering that tapas are essentially starters or appetisers, so small dishes are the norm.
A Peruvian friend who lives in Madrid told me that tapas were originally little salty dishes on the bar, designed to make patrons thirsty, so that they’d want to order beer or wine.
One tapas bar that I liked the food in was Bravas Tapas in St. Katherine’s Dock, Tower Bridge, but it can get crowded in tourist season.
One that’s probably an acquired taste is Tapas Brindisa, Borough Market, London Bridge, I thought that the plates were overpriced and the service a bit rushed, maybe due to tourists, (again), constantly asking for a table, but try it by all means, it may not be so rushed with autumn biting.
