What Restaurant did you eat at last night?

Aren't there quite a few fans of Six by Nico on these forums? I was excited to try it once it was easier/safer to get into town as it's not all that far from my office. Maybe not... ? https://www.theguardian.com/food/2021/dec/10/six-by-nico-london-w1-restaurant-review-grace-dent
As already mentioned the main critisism is it feels very rushed, especially the wine pairing which you have to chug to keep up. The food is very good and for the price you can't complain but I'd prefer to spend £35 on a smaller number of courses elsewhere and enjoy the experience, rather than try to race through 5 in a short amount of time.

Saturday night we ate at Ekstedt at The Yard and it superb. I've eaten at Ekstedt in Stockholm before so knew what to expect at Ekstedt at The Yard - bi flavours. My favourite course was the venison heart in a Swedish flatbread, it was incredibly rich.

Yesterday we had lunch at Kerridge's Bar & Grill. Typical Tom Kerridge food, packed with flavour and really tasty.

Both places we'll definitely return to.

We're due to meet some friends from Kendal on Saturday for a late lunch and Lancaster has been mentioned as a middle point.

Not after anything specifically high end food orientated, but any suggested for a decent venue? My backup is Farmyard Ales and hope Bun Chicken Bun are there. Well worth keeping an eye on them as their fried chicken is amazing and they set up fairly often!

I know you've mentioned the Quarterhouse previously.

We went to Barrafina - Adelaide St, London. We were going to the theatre.

The atmosphere was good. The food was nice. It was quick too. Just a bit expensive for small tapas portions!

We spent the weekend in Wales. Timing was really good as both the restaurants we went to had had a good week after the Michelin guide results last week.

Friday night we ate at SY23 in Aberystwyth. The food was excellent, I knew what to expect as the chap that owns it used to work at Ynyshir and I've eaten there a few times (more to come on that below). Whilst the food is very well presented it's very much all about the flavour and there was plenty of that.

We will definitely go back but after the place getting a star last week it's going to be more difficult to get a table.

After leaving Aberystwyth we went to Ynyshir where we were having dinner and an overnight stay. I booked this ages ago! Ynyshir had a good week as they got a second star. Well deserved too. We were sitting at the pass bench, right in the kitchen and it was great to see what was going on and to chat with the chefs.

I think Ynyshir is my absolute favourite restaurant, there's just 'something' about it. We last went there in January 202 and whilst we didn't feel anything was wrong or missing then, you can really tell that they've taken a step forwards since then. Everything is just a little bit better.

Everything tasted great but there were a couple of stand out dishes - lamb rib and A5 burger, both of which had huge flavour. As you can probably tell from the size of the menu each dish was small but by no means did we still feel hungry at the end of the night. Very far from it.

Sheesh Ynyshir has really upped their price a bit. We were looking at going there for the father's in law birthday not too long ago and I'm sure it was £100 less then. Bit gutted we didn't end up going then as we can't justify it's current price.
That SY23 looks interesting might have to organise a trip to try that.

We booked dinner at the pass bench and a garden room in October 2019 for a stay in January 2020 and that was £1040. Prices were the same in May 2020 when I booked for February 2022. But yeah, the prices have gone up recently, I assume because of the second star.

We went to Ynyshir for the first time in May 2018 and it was £125/person. It's gone through quite a price increase since then!

It's a very expensive place but as a very rare treat I do think it's worth it.

SY23 is definitely worth a visit. Make sure not to scoff all the bread (that's the local grains) when it arrives. Save some for mopping up the tasty sauces.

We’ve tried booking Ynyshir a few times but it’s so difficult to book a convenient date/time we’re yet to visit.

I’m also a bit put off by it seemingly imposing more and more on customers as well, you can’t dine when you want, groups must be a certain size, we don’t adapt or substitute anything etc. It just feels a bit hostile to customers. I probably don’t get it.

Ynyshir serve everyone at once so a given course is served to all the tables at the same time so I can see why there's no flexibility in the seating times. The group sizes could be a pain though, it's fine for us as it's just the 2 of us. And yes, the lack of adaptions or substitutions doesn't feel quite right to me. It doesn't bother me that much though as we've been there 3 times.

Outwardly the policies may seem a bit hostile, but when you're there it's the friendliest restaurant I've been to. Service is very relaxed and chilled out.

It isn't for everyone, and they're not trying to be.

Had a pretty epic sunday lunch at the Quality Chop House in Clerkenwell yesterday. It's been on my hit list for ages, went and caught up with a couple of mates I'd not seen for a while so we went all in. It was awesome, can't wait to go back for a dinner service.

Not the best pics, you can see I just about remembered after we had started :D No pictures of the snacks or starters but we had the croquettes, bread and black pudding which were all stunning. The black pudding looked like a sticky toffee pudding! We all had the ox heart to start as well. My friend's wife is vegetarian and the cook so he wanted to take advantage :p

...SY23 stuff...

Been to SY23 a few times, top place. If you're after more of a snack, Y Sgwar (the bit outside, out front) is well worth a go; snack doesn't really do it justice, but you can order as much or as little as you want. Everything is plated up/prepared outside, and has elements that are prepared on the Big Green Egg they've got, and it's always been very good.

Next time we're in Aberystwyth we'll go there too. Storm Eunice was in full flow when we were there so they'd battened down the hatches and Y Sgwar was closed. I would have liked to go there for breakfast the following day but ended up going to Sophie's instead. I'm glad I did, the breakfast was epic!

Well, not last night but last week .. The Dog & Gun in Skelton, 5 miles or so from Penrith. What a find, venison suet pudding followed by damson souffle. Anyone been there?
