What retro things have you done today?

You can actually mod OPL3-Less SB32's. There is the space and pads for the ymf289b-s and accompanying dac chip and required bits. Few guys on VOGON's have done it to full fat AWE32's also.

Having a nightmare getting the SB Live 5.1 to work in DOS, SB16 emulation is configured correctly, IRQ is not shared with anything else, yet load Duke3d and the program refuses to find the soundcard.

Using the vxd drivers at the moment, just about to switch to the retail cd drivers see if that is better.

Have you tried installing Phil Computer Lab DOS drivers for the live? It's worked fine for me across 440BX AMD Ironthingy and Via chipsets of that era.

You might need to edit the .ini's to point to where you will have the drivers stored on your C: drive.

Yea no luck, even with the his exit to dos shortcut and the dos drivers in the same folder as him.

I’ve been hunting for an Alpha PAL8045 or Swiftech MC462 for about a year now.

Of the currently available “new” heatsinks there are a handful of full copper ones available, but they all take 60mm fans so can be a bit loud if you want decent cooling performance.

I used to have the Alpha. Can't for the life of me think what I did with it. It's probably still attached, in my old case somewhere! Do people actually buy all this old stuff?

@LewisRaz, still not received the Slocket I take it?
Thats a negative mate!

Still waiting for my DIY adlib too which was posted last friday :(

For a reference.. A letter from my work was received on the 21st of may for most. It arrived June 4th for me... Just a little delay :(

Edit: and when they did turn up on the 4th it was at 8:15PM!!!

Got XP + SP3 installed on the Shuttle finally via PXE, then went through the loft and found a stack of CD and DVDs of old games. I think this evening it's going to be a mixture of Settlers 2, Empire Earth, and maybe Soldier of Fortune 2. Ah who am I kidding it'll be a 4am Empire Earth session. :D

I forgot how spoiled we are these days installing Windows 10. XP takes and age to install, then having to update all drivers manually and rebooting after each one etc.

@randal I’ve just spent the afternoon making my shuttle dual boot between XP SP3 and Vista x64 Ultimate (mainly because I wanted to run 3Dmark Vantage - P5209 was the score FYI).

Now I don’t actually mind Vista like some people do, but my god getting updated was a pain in the ass!

My only gripe with Vista was wireless on laptops, nearly every machine I looked at with Vista had some kind of wireless disconnection issue or something like that. Stability wise, I agree wasn't anything too negative to note.

How does the Shuttle run with Vista? Did you go for XP 32 or 64? I assume 32?

Yeah XP 32-bit, 64-bit XP was more trouble than it was worth as nothing was written for it really. Shuttle actually runs really well on Vista, and I’ve got a wireless card in it!

Most of the issues I had with Vista (and XP for that matter) on wireless were down to third-party software trying to control the WiFi (Intel PROset I’m looking at you!) and ruining the profiles and conflicting with Windows itself.

Empire earth 1 or 2? I've got both on disk (and 1 on GOG actually) but always seem to bounce off it despite it seemingly being right up my street. I love C&C, Rise of Nations, history in general.....

EE1, many an hour spent at LAN parties talking to mates and amassing massive armies. Ordering pizza and passing out at 4am.

Good times!

So, looks like i'm doing two Socket 7 builds now, the first aimed more towards Dos gaming, the second, using Super Socket 7 aimed primarily towards windows 95/98SE.

Reason for the above is the current Socket 7 motherboard not wanting to place nice with PCI sound cards, however discovered the onboard audio is an ESS1868F which is geared quite well towards Dos.
