University
University of the West of England, Bristol

Subject
Bsc Computer Systems Engineering

Period
4 year sandwhich course, currently in second year trying to find a placement...

Do you like what you're doing?
aye, course is great, uni pc's aren't the best but workable so can't complain :p

Career Ideas
Probably something to do with embedded systems/hardware design, hoping to have a better idea on what i want to do after my placement year though :)

Sorry to bring up an older thread and go a little off topic, but I've got my interview for the Imperial College this week for civil engineering, to you guys who are studying there, what was the interview like? and since I've been asked for an interview, does this mean I have a decent chance of getting in if all goes well?

my imperial interview was easy, nothing technical really and we ended up talking about my interests outside school and what i thought of the politics, as i mentioned i had an interest in current affairs onmy application.

some people i know had more rigours interview in different subjects particularly maths and physics, but nothing too taxing. Not sure about engineering though.

University
University of Essex, Southend Campus (basically southend college)

Subject
BSc Network Technology

Period
Its a 3 year course, im in the second year

Do you like what you're doing?
love the course. A bonus is i have the opportunity to get a CCNA and MCP's out of this degree as well. The college itself sucks tbh, i would have loved to of gone to a uni, but i probably wouldnt of got my work experience if i had.

Career Ideas
Obviously a network engineer of some sort :)

University
University of Wales, Aberystwyth

Subject
BSc International Politics & Intelligence Studies

Period
3 years, I'm in my 2nd!

Do you like what you're doing?
Like some of it (the strategy/military history/intelligence bits) but some of the theory and philosophy does my head in :(. Second year much better than the first.

Career Ideas
At the moment, thinking mainly of joining the RAF...

University - Sheffield Hallam University

Subject - Computer and Network Engineering

Period - 4 year SW, 2nd year atm

Do you like what you're doing? - Yes, brilliant course

Do you like the University and do you like your chosen subject area? - Yes to both

Career Ideas
What you're looking into, and list any job(s) you've been offered.
On my SW year i'm working as a computer engineer for a computer outside Sheffield. With my degree offering IEE membership upon graduation, I feel I have pretty good career prospects after graduation.

University
University of Wales, Aberystwyth

Subject
Physics

Period
4 Year Masters - I'm into my 2nd semester of my first year.

Do you like what you're doing?
The University is awesome, at the minute i'm enjoying the maths modules a lot more than physics ones, but next years look slightly more interesting.

Career Ideas
Havn't got much of a career plan sorted yet. Might do a Phd, i'm not sure yet.

Computer Science

Period
3yrs BSc, currently in my first year

Do you like what you're doing?
Subject = Excellent. Really enjoying it atm. Uni = Academically amazing, but the social life isn't the best.

Career Ideas
Absolutely no idea, and don't want to think about it for the next two years. :)

What University do you attend?
University of Birmingham

Subject
Mechanical Engineering with Automotive [MEng]

How long is the course and how much have you done?
The course is 4 years study, plus an optional years industrial placement.

I'm currently in my second year, doing a placement year next year (hopefully).

Do you like what you're doing? Do you like the University and do you like your chosen subject area?

I do like my subject, but it can get very hard sometimes. I especially like Formula Student, but that's nothing to do with my degree though, well, until my 4th year anyway.

Career Ideas, What you're looking into, and list any job(s) you've been offered.

Career wise, I'm looking for CAD based work, preferably in the Automotive industry, but I'm keeping my options open at the moment.

I'm currently seeking an Industrial Placement, but I'm having a bit of bad luck at the moment, as I've had two rejections so far (Vauxhall + Perkins), waiting to hear back from Toyota. I'm likely to be getting interviews with Bentley and Nissan, and a very very slight chance Red Bull Racing, depending on if they like my CV enough.

University

Cambridge

Subject

Medicine

Period

4th year and one degree down of a 6 year monster course.

Do you like what you're doing?

Yeah, but I'm knackered and poor. Cambridge is great, but slowly beginning to seem smaller and more closeted over the years. Nice and safe from the real world here though :)

Career Ideas

Pretty much sorted from day one for a career, want to specialise in trauma and orthopedic surgery :D

History and English Language (Classical Literature as an outside)

Period
First of four years.

Do you like what you're doing?
I like the university and enjoy my subjects for the most part, though I find English Language rather dull. In any case, we do not have to choose our honours until the 3rd year so I'll probably drop it in favour of Classical Lit and History.

Career Ideas
None.

What University do you attend?
Sheffield Hallam

Subject
Mechanical Engineering with Automotive [BEng (Hons)]

How long is the course and how much have you done?
4 years.. In the 3rd year now on a placement at Nissan in Sunderland

Do you like what you're doing? Do you like the University and do you like your chosen subject area?

There's good and bad areas for me on the course but i've managed so far and will keep going :)
The placement year has definitely been beneficial. Not as specific to my degree as i though as most of the work is planning engineering. However i've made some good contacts and feel i will treat my final year far more professionally :)
I'd recommend for anyone who has the option to do a placement year. It's a great experience for you and also will look very good on your CV. Especially when you can say things like "I helped in a task to save the company £xxxxxx a year."

Outside of course.. Sheffield is a great city for a student!! Frouk on a Friday up at sheff uni i still come down for, plus all the other nights out in the week. I recommend it highly!!

Career Ideas, What you're looking into, and list any job(s) you've been offered.

Having done this placement it has proven to be lonely at times so far away from family friends and girlfriend. Therefore i think i will apply for the graduate jobs at Toyota in Burnaston. But that's only one option. Want to travel for a year, might join the army and also thought about a million other things. I won't know until i'm doing it!!
