What was the first online multiplayer game you played?

Technically, it was F-22 Raptor in late '97. However, it only lasted 5 mins as the lag was ridiculous. I assumed that's what all on-line gaming was like, so I didn't bother trying again for a while.

Then in early '98 I found the free Wireplay software on a cover disk from a games mag and thought I would give Quake 2 multiplayer a bash. I barely moved from the desk for the next 3.5 years :o

probably AOE II back in the early noughties. moved onto fps's like CS and COD later on around 2005ish (late I know...)

My first ever MMO was Dark age of Camalot on dial up many years ago :). Every time there was a raid i had to look at the floor to do it or i would go LD :D

The first game i played online was cod 4 on the ps3, i was always an avid gamer and have pretty much owned every console available prior but never got round to playing games online.I remember seeing cod4 reviews in xbox magazine whilst i was on my second tour of Iraq.I just had to buy a ps3 on r and r along with cod4, oblivion along with a few other games to play.I was gutted i had to go back after two weeks as i was totally addicted and would be a few months till i got to play them again!

Battlefield 1942 rapidly followed by the Desert combat mod, I loved that game even tho I struggled with lag on 56k modem :p

Quake 2 DM, eventually moved onto RA2 and CTF.

56k dial up at the time, used to use 0800 numbers for internet but brought out the uber quality 0845 from Jolt for clan games for the lowest ping :P Good times... rather large phone bills, but good times!

Can't be many in your shoes given that Wolf3d didn't have any online multiplayer out the box, I assume this was some sort of source port that came out a few years later?
Even so I'd say that is highly unusual because most people's first online multiplayer experiences will be via a game that supports it natively, rather than having to setup mods etc, especially 15+ years ago. By the time you could get hold of Wolf3D mods Doom would have been out a while so would have been most peoples port of call. In fact looking online I can't really see many online multiplayer ports until many years after the game was released (so after even Quake for example which supports native TCP/IP online multiplayer), although that's not to say they didn't exist. So why did you start with Wolf3D and not say Doom?

Think it was either Total Annihilation or Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight on Wireplay

<--- Still using the same Username :p

I remember for ages trying to get other games trying to work online before wireplay, mainly Doom 2, but I didn't have a clue what I was doing, despite going around all the Compuserve forums :o
