When are you going fully electric?

Yeah, it’s the same myth people think turning off one pedal drive mode = no regen. That only applies to Tesla.

Every other modern EV just moves the regen to the brake pedal (not the friction brakes).

If you get proficient with both OPD and brake pedal regen, you get efficiency within margin of error*

*all other conditions being equal of course.

In fact brake pedal regen is more efficient on non-Teslas because you never recover 100% of your energy and braking unecessarily when you lift off the pedal is a net negative

You are correct in general I think but that could be because getting proficient at the constant OPD throttle modulation takes practice. It’s possible to get similar efficiency, but certainly harder with OPD. I know people who think they are great at OPD but they really aren’t. If done wrong it’s quite a jerky see saw type experience and their efficiency suffers.

With my I-Pace at first the difference in efficiency between low and high regen was about 10% in favour of low. As I improved in OPD it became margin of error. Though ultimately I ended up with low regen and creep mode as it makes for a more relaxed drive in my opinion.

My old E-Tron and my wife’s C40 have full coast mode with brake pedal regen. They feel like you are gliding when you lift off the throttle. I just don’t like that OPD gives a constant feel that you are fighting some invisible force.

OPD is awful - I’ve had it permanently turned off in my Polestar since I bought it. The idea that my foot could slip off the pedal at 70mph and my car would immediately start braking is just crazy to me. I’ve set the car up so it drives like an automatic - with creep mode on it’s exactly like any normal car.

I much prefer controlling it at slow speeds using the brake pedal - feels much more natural…

People seem to think you only get regen by using high regen and don’t realise that brake pedal will regen without using friction material.

Can ever take your foot off pedal to move around if you cruise along. Anyway cyclical conversation as those who don’t get it will still talk about how regen creates energy

No ACC?

I adore regen on electric. It makes the driving so intuitive and natural

I’ve not got tonnes of experience in electric cars, but I’ve driven my mums Q4 Etron a fair bit and it’s great.

Regen in all situations except dual carriageway and motorway.

It’s not as efficient as coasting and managing speed better, but it’s the most compelling thing about driving an electric car for me.

Must do, how else would a 'self charging' hybrid work. ;)
that has to be one of the most irritating marketing terms i have ever seen.

i mean if we use their definition, then every EV on the road is a self charging EV!.

just call it what it is, a petrol hybrid with regenerative braking. i am really surprised that advertising standards didnt take issue with it.

Just had a call with Octopus and pretty much decided on the Q8 Black Edition 55

Bit of a curve ball in they have a BMW iX xDrive40 M Sport with Sky Pack on. 24 plate with 3,800 miles for a bit of a steal....

Decisions decisions

Very nice cars although the 40 is a bit short ranged as well but if it suits it’ll be a lovely place to spend hours driving

76.6kWh battery vs 115kwh battery. Depends how important that is to you.

Thanks - yeah the range isn't so good and at 215 (on the details I've seen) may be a deal breaker in itself
In the warmer days I easily get 270 miles. The 215 miles is Winter range.

The Sky Pack just adds
  • Sky Lounge Panoramic Glass Sunroof
  • Sun Protection Glass

Not really, they have a plug, thats the whole reason for such a term with the general public.

Regenerative braking people think that has something to do with the actual brakes!
