When are you going fully electric?

About to go full electric as a household, to go with the model 3.

Just put a deposit down on a black MG4 SE Long range. Less than 1 year old and £12k off new list price. Some crazy deals for electric at the moment.

MG dealer was offering £9K off new Trophy spec but then we would need to finance it so quite costly for a second car.

Didn’t really want to go electric, but new car prices are stupid high and spec wise I couldn’t get close second hand for an ICE car without resorting to 10% finance that involves paying a lot of interest.

Edit: and dealers absolutely hate it when you pay cash these days as they make all the margin on finance.

I keep saying that going EV for my wife would be a good move, that was confirmed today when she took my new company car out.

It's a PHEV but she drove it in full electric mode and she loved the smoothness, lack of noise, simplicity of the controls etc.

She still likes her Polo and financially it makes no sense but maybe it's worth considering a bit more.

Tavascan V2 - Thoughts so far.

The Good
  • Looks the fantastic - Bordering on over-the-top crazy inside but not quite. Exterior parked up it just looks a bit angry. Glad I went for the Atacama Desert colour, "free" too. Gives a nice light show just walking up to the car and a beep and a light show as you walk away.

  • Comfortable and quiet. I use comfort mode for my commute, not sure why you would choose any of the others except range for long journeys.

  • Power is more than enough for what it is. Don't see the VZ is worth the 50hp, +100Kg and range decrease for an extra second 0-60.

  • 15" screen - Touch interface is FAR better due to the size of the screen. Capacitive AC controls work fine, again due to the size. This is coming from a Leon that was similar but much smaller. I urge people that are put off by it, experience it.

  • The infotainment is really a step up from Seat/Cupra's previous offerings.

  • AR HUD - Absolutely fantastic. Best feature IMO.

  • Matrix headlights - Many dynamic tiny suns

  • Turning circle - This surprised me, it's pretty tight.

  • Spacious - Feels nice and big inside, especially with the roof blind open. Bags of room in the rear and although the boot isn't as big as the Enyaq Coupe (by only a smidge) it's still plenty at 540L.

  • Interior quality might not be top-end, but it's safe to say Cupra have moved up in the VAG league from where they used to be with Seat.
Meh
  • Capacitive steering wheel controls - Aren't great but It's not taken long to get used to them at all. Worth bearing with.

  • The Cupra app is, okay. No great, not bad. I can pre-heat/cool and set charging limits etc.

The Bad
  • Armrest storage, whilst big, I find myself leaning on it getting in/out of the car and it pushes the flaps in a bit.

  • Visibility isn't great - Rear window's small, but wing mirrors are huge, so swings and roundabouts. With the front visibility, you really have to guess/get used to where the front corners are. The rear, front and top-down 360 cameras really help here though.

  • A lot to get your head round in general if not used to the suite of functionality and BEV. Consider your wives ;)

  • They hadn't made the mats available for the Tavascan for when I bought, so I have ones from the Born :@ :P

Did someone on here say that they had an I-pace? How are you getting on with it? Still enjoying it? I had a lift the other day in a 24 plate and I very much liked it! So comfortable and silent, it really was very impressive It's made me look at a 21 plate HSE now. Any drawbacks to the 21 HSE? Things I should look out for? Am hoping there will be a drop in price early next year.

21 HSE is probably the sweet spot, had the Pivi Pro upgrade and the 12V battery sorted but before they started suffering from supply chain issues.

Battery is a nightmare on mine though, have had many cells replaced and a long wait each time so I'd personally not buy one again even though I do love the way it drives.

Surely that depends on how much her Polo is worth, and how much you'd saved on fuel in a few years?
No idea on the value of the Polo but I do know that I reduced it considerably by servicing it myself. When we took it on from her parents it had a full VW service history.

She only does a couple of thousand miles a year. Loads of short trips to the next village where her parents live, nursery runs when I'm working away etc. So while there is no fuel saving to be made really an electric drivetrain would be more suited to the constant short journeys from cold. She is also a bit paranoid about pollution (of all sorts) so another win there.

I'm also convinced she would go further afield if the fuel cost was a fraction of the cost of petrol. I keep telling her it's a daft mindset but she won't travel 10 miles away to do something she wants for an hour because she feels its a waste of petrol.

We're in no rush to make a decision but it's worth a consideration at least.

yes interesting - hadn't appreciated china doesn't have control of the mining resources for batteries - the start of the supply line (a chink in their armour), thought they had bought many mining rights
Even though chinese ev mftrs ww market 65% of total, thought that's not yet true in usa/eu/uk, native brands have majority, and cn penetration is pending on distribution infrastructure & friendly import duties.

£935 to chop the Pug in early. But if I get the Model Y before April 6th or w/e it is, I save £390 Lux tax *3 years = £1170. Basically being paid £235 to change my car *

*yes I know

Gotta love that man maths, spend thousands to save £200.

That said we all know someone who bought a brand new car because it had £30 road tax when that was a thing.

Bolivia, Argentina and chile all have more lithium reserves than the USA so you'd think the yanks would secure that as feedstock at least.
I bet they haven't.
