Where is the first floor?

Why'd he ram the doors on an empty lift shaft?!

A woman refused to hold the door open for him and he got mad. He was stupid and his anger led to his demise but the woman should have held the lift for a disabled man and those doors should not have given way like that, could have easily been a child messing about.

But did he hit the first floor or the ground floor?

;)

People on those electric carts get very angry. I see it a lot. They're a liability. It's like they use it to take out all their aggression regarding their disability on the public and inanimate objects.

Damn poor design, aye.

Still...all he had to do was wait maybe 30s more. Silly man.

Look im as anti yank as the next man when it comes to our beloved language but why not just admit being on the first floor of a building should mean your on the first floor of a building. You could still call it the ground floor if you want that wouldnt matter as long as the second floor was called the second floor and not the first floor i.e ground floor, second floor and so on.

So, you admit to denying the Zen precept of a 0 level ground floor? You do realise that your affront to the gods of decency, logic and Britishness will condemn you to another cycle of the cosmic wheel? And you're probably coming back as a 'murican

Because you are supporting a system that says 2-2 = -1

doesnt matter ive already made a deal and im coming back as a dinosaur

Let me explain.. I have 2 apples and i put one on the floor and the other above the floor on a table. i then proceed to eat the apple on the table but leave the one on the floor. I now have 1 apple left on the floor.

Exactly - no one wants to bend over and eat an apple on the floor. Or is this a kinky thing you have going?

What if you put one of those apples in the basement though? You still have 1 apple but Americans don't call the lowest level 1 then move up (which would support your logic), they call the ground level 1 then call the the immediate level below it as -1, which misses the fact zero exists. If I'm in an American building and what they call 'floor 2' (floor 1 in the UK) and I go down 2 floors then I'm on floor -1, so how does 2-2= -1?

If no basement levels existed I may agree with you, but seeing as they do then surely the British system makes more sense.....

If you are on 'floor 3' of an American building and ask someone where the car park is and they say "Go down 4 floors" then you have to remember to forget that 0 doesn't exist in their system to get to -2, but in the UK (where you'd be on the 2nd floor) you simply minus 4 from 2 to get -2

Oh gawd. I should sleep but this thread is entertaining :D

Ground floor = the busiest floor where all the main roads and main entrances are...

I've been looking online for properties today (more specifically flats) and they all say ground floor (where the ground/main road is) or first floor (one flight of stairs up).... Does that mean the estate agents are all wrong??

We don't take kindly to maths round these parts.

I could quite simply label my above-ground floors F1 to F5. And my basement levels B1 to B2 (where B2 is lower).

Where are your equations now?!

You are trying to assign a numerical system based on natural numbers to floors. There is absolutely no reason to do this. The labels can be arbitrary and don't need to be a sequence of natural numbers, and thus arithmetic implications are irrelevant.

You could start labeling them alphabetically or use Egyptian glyphs.

Or, as used in American systems, all basement levels can simply be prefixed by the letter B and avoiding any need for 0. Thus the first floor you enter from the street can be labeled 1, the first basement can be B1.
