Where is the first floor?

It's obvious now that the people in the American camp are quite far ahead in the argument

Here's a clue....it's in the name

Ground Floor

Notice the word floor. That's the clue. It's a floor.

People seem to be confusing elevation with floor.

What us brits should be doing is the following:

Second Floor
Ground First Floor
-1 Basement

forget the zero! This is better as not every building has a basement / underground level. If you lived in a bungalow, you'd have one floor, the ground floor. If you said I have no floors, what are you walking on? air?

But 'Ground First Floor' just doesnt sound right.

For me the first floor is the first floor. If you have a ground floor then the first floor is the first one after that. If you dont have a ground floor then your first floor comes first so you start on the first floor USA style :P

We're the stupid ones on that score. Ground floor is idiotic, it's the 1st floor of the building.
ground floor flat vs 1st floor flat.

makes perfect sense it's the ground level of the building, it counts as 0 you add a floor on and it becomes the 1st floor.

it's perfect logic
apart from where I live the elevator has the buttons
4
3
G

the 3rd floor should be the first floor.

How you missed that out completely. Then tailor your argument to suit.

Just like leaving out the zero and tailor your argument to suit.

ground floor
nounBRIT.
noun: ground floor; plural noun: ground floors; modifier noun: ground-floor
1.
the floor of a building at ground level.
"a ground-floor flat"

stop being silly.
