Where's the QHD 144hz Smart Money at?

It does have issues especially with ghosting while Freesync is enabled.

I have one and it's pretty bad during dark scenes if you're not near 100 fps.

I was set on a VA 144hz until I got put off by all the end user reports of ghosting/smearing. It’s disappointing how many websites (even tft central) who allude to the problem without really saying how intrusive it can be (unless every end user who complains is over-sensitive).

That rting.com review is just as bad. The responsiveness section is more or less “lol yeah, great, responsive screen, bit of ghosting but whaddya gonna do?”

Thanks! I am playing games with high image settings running under 100 fps with lots of dark scenes, would have been an instant return.

The monitor is amazing outside of Freesync.

If you don't use Freesync then it is one of the best monitors out. It has really good colours, black level, low input lag and low smearing but as soon as you use Freesync it becomes a nightmare if you can't get 100+ fps.

Games like Tomb Raider and the Anthem demo really show it's flaws with dark scenes and grey colours. The caves in Anthem light up when you move your mouse and it's really distracting.

The smaller 24CFG73 is better but is only 1080p and the LFC kicks in at 70 fps.

I might go back to the Asus PG278QR this week as I read that the Dell S2719DGF might not have a good enough black level even for a TN.

It seems mental to me that both Gigabye and Razer (at least I assume, going by specs and announcement date) are both using the new Innolux panel as the Acer Nitro XV272 and the bargain basement VG270 (which previously had an AUO panel in it before it came to our shores, they seem to have swapped it out without even changing the model number) despite it seeming like a massive dud as far as gaming goes. An 8ms+ G2G avg is too slow for 144hz and if you're not bothered about sloppy response times and ghosting you might as well go for an VA panel. To put them in your 500 quid+ "tactical gaming" monitors seems like a massive con.

It's been nearly 4 years since AUO came up with their formula for a high refresh/low response time IPS panel and nobody else seems to be able to get it right. Even AUO can barely get it right given the quality control on those things.

I'd been holding off buying a monitor because I couldn't quite force myself to part with the best part of 500 quid for the 5 year old tech in the current batch of AUO IPS G-sync panels, but even now G-Sync isn't mandatory it still seems like I've basically got the same limited choice.

I quite liked the look of the Nixeus/Pixio efforts as they package the age old AUO panel in with variable overdrive freesync for a reasonable price, but they essentially don't exist over this side of the pond.

So my options are spend big on five year old tech, spend moderately on a panel which doesn't have the pixel response times to keep up with its refresh rate or wait to see how the LG panel shakes out "sometime" this year. All the while I'm running a 1080ti into a six year old 1080p 60hz monitor.

Yeah, that IS a bummer.

1080ti on an otherwise great 60hz dell I.P.S with excellent color reproduction, ideal resolution, no noticeable back-light bleed.

Seems to limit the choice more. Pay more for higher refresh with a potential compromise on all other areas, the higher color option looked attractive but the slow response times and at least with the Gigabyte no ability to switch color space for photo editing, complete meh.

Old tech at moderate prices would be good to see this side of the pond.

Yeah im never going to buy VA again. I tried the msi mpg27cq and the hannspree 32" one and both had horrible ghosting/trailing on dark images. I could even see it when dragging the steam window around, or scrolling down websites like youtube in dark theme. Freesync was pointless on these as the lower the Hz of the monitor the worse the ghosting gets.

Got my money back and switched back to my 7 year old 1080p 120hz TN panel for now (lg w2363d). Image clarity is so much smoother on this and it only cost me £180 in 2011.

Dont really want to fork out £500 for a 3-4 year old IPS panel with bad freesync range and risk having to swap out multiple times to get a good one, so might just get the Dell S2719DGF. Will use until decent OLED monitors are out there.

Anyone querying the Dell S2719DGF,

I bought mine a few days ago, and can honestly say it's worth the money. If you intend to use it with a Nvidia card, I can confirm it works fine. I've tried 10 games, and after a quick restart all work with G-Sync. I'll be uploading a video on YouTube later, with actual footage as I'm aware that there's practically nothing for the monitor available. My username is Nick Hornby

Hope it helps. Cheers
Well appreciated Nick, thanks.
Can you let us know when it's up and link to it?

Edit----

Found it, thanks man.

Thx dude.
I always enable Vsynch in NVCP for Gsync anyway so that's kinda normal for me.
Glad the monitor's working good with the VRF on nvidia though.

Where did you get you're info on the VG270 using a swapped out panel in the uk?

I read the one Russian review on the VG270UP using the A.O.U. M270DAN02. i.e older tech at a very moderate price with decent color, contrast and response times.

I can't find any info in regard to a panel switch for the U.K with slower response times. I don't see why it would use the slower innolux panel as it does not sport the same color gamut.

Considering taking a punt and picking the VG27Up up later in the week unless I can find any info that contradicts the only review.

Seems like any choice is a panel lottery with the risk of having to return. If it does not match the review or has issues with g-sync can always be returned, as the price is low I can live with the hassle.

Does that mean it's brighter?

I don't think they have update specs so difficult to tell what the differences in brightness colour or response other than anecdotal user report.

Went on the Acer site and could not find the more expensive 'H.D.R' version, was listed in the gaming section for purchase but seems to have disappeared.

All rather confusing.

It's a completely different panel from a different manufacturer. Better colours but worse response times.

It's mental really that the Acer, Asus, AOC and Viewsonic versions of the same 1440p/144hz/G-Sync AUO panel are all essentially the same monitor just marketed like they all have something different to add. Meanwhile there are two different versions of the VG270UP with the same model number that are completely different products.

Did you go for the Dell in the end @Teh_Next

Just purchased it myself and arrives tomorrow.
Still to hit the buy button mate. Ended up spending the money on something else that popped up but I should be ready to buy again at the end of this month or next at the latest.
Hope you like the new monitor though. Will you share your findings?
