I can't see the PS4 being DRM-free. If Sony doesn't implement it then publishers will. It's just a PR play.
Exactly.
But they do it today anyway. Online passes are about the extent publishers can go with any form of DRM. Without the console manufacturer implementing it themselves, publishers will be limited to what they do today.
Sony have said that they're actively making sure that publishers can't impose drm on the PS4, saying that they don't want people to pay any more over the price of ps plus to play online

It's fairly easy for them to go a step further though - the game could just install to your console from the physical disc, but then need to be activated via a 'single player pass' - in the same way Steamworks games have to be activated and tied to your Steam account before they will work (Dawn of War 2 for example).
This is great news - but really, who has the power here?
Can Sony tell EA to foxtrot oscar if they want to put single player DRM into the next FIFA?
Does EA need Sony, or does Sony need EA...?

Wont be getting a ps4 as cheap and nice looking as it is....just cannot get used to their awful controllers.
PS4 for me.
Ah, you've played with the new controllers then? Awesome! Tell us more.
I think once you consider the fact that the publisher has to use their own system external to the OS (so could be within the game itself which then links to their online authentication server) then its quite a reasonable amount of effort required to get into place. This is great news - but really, who has the power here?
