Call me pessimistic, but i'd guess these 'authorized re sellers' will no doubt bend you right over, more so than they do already for selling second hand games because they know they've got you by the balls.

That can't be good for anyone (other than CEX, Game etc, they're probably loving it)
We don't know that though, and it could be offset by being able to play the games for free any of your 10 family and friends have (which seems to include DLC etc) potentially saving you a lot in the first place?

I just don't think it's anywhere near as bad as it sounds if you believe the "OMG there is no second hand games on Xbox" when you look at the whole picture.

Sure it'd be nice for no limitations but if this lets me share, and access the entire game library of 10 mates at any time then I'm happy enough. If I can sell at CEX/Game etc even if I get a couple of quid less for a game I can live with that for the convenience of the digital sharing. *shrug*

I understand that some people depend on selling their games second hand and they might be worried but that will still be possible perhaps with some changes to present.

*Edit* and yay for install it once, never have to find and insert the flippin' disk ever again :)

Ebooks it's a lottery, some are cheaper, some are more expensive.

Steam, yes their sales are amazing, what about all the other times? If you want to buy a title at launch (as I imagine a lot do with games) it's nearly always more expensive on Steam.

Cd's no you can't. If you rip a CD it is then illegal to sell it on. This is the closest parallel there is to Xbox One games. You buy them, rip (add them) to your account. If you were then allowed to sell the game to anyone, how would they stop mass piracy? This is why people like Steam have had no option to sell on games for years, it's a problem with no easy solution.

No it's not a lottery at all with Amazon and ebooks. It's very rare the kindle edition is not cheaper. Seriously go and browse the book section on Amazon as you clearly never have.

That is certainly not my experience with steam, usually it is cheaper on release day, not significantly so but certainly not more expensive where are you getting this from?

If you remove the rip from your computer you are legally allowed to sell the CD without any problem... Also they don't stop mass piracy of CD's copies are everywhere.

You have to question while there is no easy solution the value of moving to a digital download only model, it would be very interesting to see if PSN/XBL maintained pricing in line with traditional retail what the general public would buy...

I think its particularly pertinent considering the compromise MS are attempting as people that are happy to go digital download only its more than acceptable, while to the rest it still represents that move to that future where you just cant sell anything digital. Just having that compromise though seems to truly satisfy no one (I say this more as a black and white generalisation of those two sides) and probably lessens the foundation of their vision...

I think thats one of the reasons Ive sided with Sony, moreso that when the time is right its not that difficult to move to it, it is just a software construct built to a set of policies. When that time is right is obviously the big unknown, I just know personally it isnt now and looking at the varied opinions out there, Im very much not alone. Digital download only models live hand in hand with traditional retail for other media so theres always that choice and that choice drives many things within that particular medium economy, MS seemingly have removed that choice and whatever its left from traditional retail is all but superficial.

Anyway it be nice to see how many would jump at a digital copy of a game compared to a physical one and the advantages/disadvantages we associate with that if both were priced competitively. Something like The Last of Us could be a good one to look at as I dont think the digital/retail pricing was that far off, Im sure someone can suggest a better example, though I doubt theres one that demonstrates pricing parity for the whole sales duration

I hear what you're saying, and it'll clearly impact people on different levels.

For me, i'm not much of a social gamer so it's unlikely i'd even have 10 people on my 'friends/family' list, especially considering I don't even know 10 real life friends who would be remotely interested in the Xbox One so that limits one of the best features immediately.

I wouldn't say i'm reliant on selling second hand games but I do like knowing that once i've played though I can recoup as much money as possible on the bay, or this very forum rather than the hassle of standing in a massive queue at CEX (and potentially recouping not a great deal)

Kotaku: Can we be in the same family?

Spencer: Yeah.

Kotaku: What would be the limitation on that?

Spencer: [After encouraging me to check Microsoft's published document on this] I do think that sharing in a family group is an important part of the positives in our ecosystem today...You don't have to send in your birth certificate. You define what a family unit is and the people who connect to you and how that library works.

So that's confirmed then from Phil Spencer that family members are defined by the user.

Rotating with 'family' could save...umm...quite a lot?

Really? Can you do it with ebooks from Amazon? albums bought on itunes? movies bought on itunes? games bought on Steam?

None of that is physical, so why could he?

I love how everyone is accepting this BS for the big MS. I love the xbox 360 and think MS have made some seriously poor choices with the xbox one.

They're the same point! You're the one saying MS are doing something wrong by limiting the sale of physical products but that other retailers aren't doing something wrong by limiting or banning the sale of digital products. Why are you angry with MS and not them?

So people have the right to sell things they buy....unless they're digital? Why?

I've already alluded to the scenarios where digital works, and that is when there is a benefit to it. Like steam or kindle.

Many people only ever buy games in the Steam sale because that's when the price makes sense to them for the product.

Full price games under Microsoft's full price, limited trading restrictions doesn't make sense to many and thus the PS4 appeals to them more. This is reflected in polls you can find all over the internet.

Games won't stay full price will they?

So it's fine if we're losing our rights as long as we get a benefit?

We'll be able to share our library of games with a group of friends, bingo there's just one benefit.

Games won't stay full price will they?

They are more likely to stay a higher price for longer now they don't need to compete with the 2nd hand market. Plus as much as you try to sugar coat it their move with 2nd hand sales sets a horrid new precedent.

Add that at any time in the next 8 or so years a publisher can change a few settings and take away your right to trade your game even in an authorised place and it doesn't look good.

The benefits clearly aren't enough or advertised well enough. Plus the ludicrous other negatives (Indie policy, lesser specs, kinect, higher price) with the console add to it's lack of appeal.

The Xbox One is a console with lots of things working against it, and very little working for it. Not only that Microsoft has done a terrible job advertising its benefits.

I think when you buy digital you know what you're getting in for.

I don't see the point of physical media on the X1, years from now when the servers are down this console in it's current state of having to be connected every 24hrs will have no use to any retro collectors.

Well now we're in to wild speculation. There's nothing to suggest that the servers will be taken down any time soon. They could just as easily change the system to not require the validation if they ever wanted to shut the servers down (like Valve always promise they'll do with Steam)

Xbox One games are no different to Steamworks PC games, they're a digital license in a physical box. My copy of Dishonored says on the back "Requires internet connection and free steam account to active". I can't sell it on but once installed I don't need the disc to play. Xbox One is almost identical except you can sell it on (with some restrictions) and you can share it with friends or transfer it once permanently to a friend.

If I could get a new game,on release day,for £25 then i'd be tempted to buy some games. Well.when I have fibre optic where I live. I wouldn't wanna download a game on a 7MB connection!

So people have the right to sell things they buy....unless they're digital? Why?

Actually we do have a right to sell on digital,er,things. We just aren't being given a way to sell them. And none of us have the money to take on Steam in a legal battle. Luckily the EU is fighting for us. So may be able to sell on digital copies of whatever soon.

The other few things your neglecting are choice, if your a PC gamer you really have little choice but to get on board with Steam, however luckily the PS4 and Xbox One debate leaves us with a choice whether to accept it or not.

Also Steam was different because it was released with this policy, it wasn't suddenly changed it has always worked this way.

With the Xbox One they are forcing Steam digital style distribution on a dedicated fan base, obviously they have a right to disagree with the change.

The Xbox One is being released with this policy

They're not forcing it at all. Forcing it would be putting it on 360 and saying all new games from now on require this policy.

If they had ditched the name Xbox I would agree with you. However it's an Xbox it's users relate to it as an Xbox and it will forever be an Xbox.

They are forcing it on the Xbox One, is what I mean. Not on people, smart people will obviously choose not to be forced to use it and instead use the PS4.
