What GPU are you planning to get? Or at least roughly how much are you planning to spend on one?
I see 4k mentioned quite a bit but have no clue what it is about
27" 1440p PLS here.
I have suffered from very itchy feet with regards to monitors this last couple of years, just couldn't settle on one that I wanted.
Started with a Samsung 1440p 27" that I had for nearly 4 years then decided I wanted to give 21:9 a go but couldn't stretch to the 3440x1440 models so got a LG 34" 2560x1080 - enjoyed it for about 4 or 5 months then realised I really missed the pixel density and vertical height (real estate) of a 1440p monitor - sold the LG.
Then i went to BenQ 32" off of the Rainforest, didn't take to it at all, far too big for my desk and overall usage so that went back after a week or so.
Then went with the Dell U2515H 1440p which was a fantastic piece of kit, it looked awesome but for my gaming I found it just a touch too small - so guess what, it was moved on as well.
And where am I now? Full Circle back to another Samsung 27" PLS 1440p - although this one is wall mountable which I really like.
At the moment I can't see me moving to anything in the near future - possibly one of the 34 inch ultra wides at 3440x1440 resolution as that's about the only thing I haven't tried yet!
But I do love the 27" @ 2560x1440 - a real sweet spot, for now.....
Either an R9 380 4G or GTX 960 4G
In that case 4k is going to be a no for gaming and 1440p will require you to drop some settings for decent framerate. You'll be fine at 1080p with pretty much everything max though

CONTEXT
This is dependent on the games you're playing. A 380X or 960 is capable of playing a lot of games at UHD (It's not 4K!) depending on the age.
If you play a lot of older games, it'd be fine.
Full settings at 60fps? Older games, sure, anything relatively demanding and new - not at max settings. Perfectly capable, but like I said, he'll have to drop some settings for a decent framerate (i.e. consistent 60)

Depends if he prefers resolution, framerate, or quality settings I guess.
