Who here owns a Fiesta ST?

Pick one up tomorrow!

Not the best example, but some are insane prices. £6k, white, 65k, no mods (bar the cabin noise blank), mismatched tyres so it'll be going for some rain sport 5s at the weekend.

Drives well, pulls well, stone chips on the bonnet and the seat has some wear.

Better than some I've viewed at 7.5-9k!

So my wife's mk8 fiesta st has had a message coming up about the gpf, has anyone else had this. I don't know if the message just means it's cleaning the filter (at that time) so keep driving. I've grabbed a pic below (from a random website). This has come on twice in maybe 2 months, although she was having issues with the sensor earlier this year, so don't know if that's the problem.

Have you tried taking the car for a decent journey to allow it to regenerate? If I got that message that is what I would do first of all.

I would be concerned the car will go into reduced power/limp mode if ignored.

Would the Ford Specialist not be able to view the GPF’s readings? E.g Soot level etc. I had a brief read online and seems you aren’t the only “Ford” owner having this message appear therefore could be worth calling round a couple of dealers for an opinion?

I know DPF’s can be sensitive, regularly require regeneration and specific conditions required for this to all work in harmony but having a GPF Warning seems out of the ordinary.

Yea, I'm going to text my local indy. It did have issues with the sensor earlier this year, but from what I've read it's not that common, which makes me think it's not a real thing. It does give the feeling they maybe weren't tested properly. We're going to take it on a long journey next weekend, it's not in limp mode or anything.

Is the car out of manufactures warranty?

Before your long journey next weekend are you continuing to use the car with the message displayed? Although even short journeys should be sufficient to clear a GPF so perhaps something isn’t right for sure.

Not 100% sure but when Diesels show this message and is ignored usually there will become a point where it puts the car into limp mode and is unable to regenerate on its own and will need a Garage/Dealer or someone who has the kit to perform a forced regen possibly.

Thought it would be worth mentioning.

It's 2019 plate, so not long out of warranty. I'd read the same about regen not being an issue on petrol which is why its a bit puzzling. I'm going to try a 20 min journey tomorrow and keep the revs a bit high to see what it does.

There was a problem with the 1.0 ecoboosts in the new fiesta and focus where the gpf was clogging, it needed a software update. Possibly similar issue is occuring if you have sensor problems.

OK. I'm giving a local main dealer a ring after lunch to see if it's a common thing. From what I've read, a regen seems to occur in the none acceleration phase, but that's going to be quite infrequent surely? (Or at least a bit on/off if maintaining a constant speed).

So I rang a main dealer, and he said that notification is just to say a regen is occuring. He did say they did say ford released an update to deal with excessive notifications (I assume because it was a early one). Still going to be 150 quid just to update software  .

Did you call just the one? I would call another dealership for a second opinion for the sake of a call.

I would be interested to know when the update was released and if your car has been serviced or ever in with Ford whilst under warranty why wasn’t the update done already?

If that’s the message which appears when regenerations take place why haven’t you seen this before, I assume in over 3 years it must have regenerated.

Also if it is a software update and it's not anything problematic just wait for your next service and they'll update the software as part of that, assuming you take it to a main dealer

Valid points but I normally just take it to my indy (who is a Ford specialist but doesn't do software). Not sure why it's not happened before, I didn't think software got updated as part of a service.

Wife is thinking about getting a 2-3 yr old ST-3. She likes that they're fully loaded and would like something faster than her current Mark 7 1.6 NA.

She is a nippy driver, but how are these 1.5 3 cylinders to drive when you're not rev'ing the balls off them?

I’ve test driven one, currently got a Polo GTI with a 2.0 (4 Cyclinder) - Think even out of the 2.0 I’ve only got 30NM Torque more.

Coming from a 1.6NA it will feel much quicker when low down in the revs due to being turbo charged since you get the torque lower down the revs apposed to an NA where peak torque isn’t achieved until “rev’ing the balls off it”

Worth a test drive!

My googlefu tells me the 2.0 polo only gives the same power as the fiesta (and is quite a bit slower).

Edit, thought the fiesta was 6.0 to 60, but it looks like its actually 6.5, still impressive how much power they get out of it.

When Ford announced it would be going to a 1.5 - 3 Cylinder Engine there were many concerns but since then the engine has been mainly praised.

VW have definitely used a tame version of the EA888 in the Polo - Not good for business if the Polo ends up being quicker than it’s bigger brother a Golf GTI.

It was a while back but the MK8 ST felt nippier and more eager to rev out compared to the Polo. I would say it is more of a feel thing and with the DSG and more torque the numbers are faster than it’s feels on the Polo.

Great video showing comparisons between these two including an I20N e.g 0 to 60’s… Brake Tests… Overall driving experiences.

What tyre size do the MK8 Fiestas come with? Like them all it seemed to struggle to put its power down the most in the 0 to 60’s.

I think it might be 225 18s on hers, not sure though. Oh looks like it might even be 205. Could do to be a tad wider, although it's rare it seems to wheelspin (even in this weather).

Thought they were 205’s - Seems rather narrow to me but I’m no expert!

Does hers have the performance pack with the differential?

Any update on the error message?
No update, but it's nor booked in till the 29th. I do think the tyres are narrow, I'm sure my old corsa C had 205s as standard and that had half the power. Hers doesn't have the diff either, when we got it I think the performance pack was either like hens teeth, or dealers just didn't list it (I'm sure it's now standard though).
