Who here owns a Mini?

Thoughts on the 2L diesel?

There’s a well-specced car in a nice colour, but it’s the 150 BHP diesel.

Edit: do they rev match? I found it really enhanced the day to day driving on the 2L petrol I drove

JCW was dropped off today to have the fuel pump replaced, service and a few other odd jobs (de-carbon and replacing the rounded nuts on the track rod ends) - Seemed to drive a lot better on the way (even if it was stop start traffic for the most part) and it was running a lot better and boosting higher than I've seen it before (~9PSI so still a good bit off what it should be boosting to) Should get it back tomorrow and will see how it is. Again, I was reminded just how much of a fun car it is to drive

So I've been looking at this car: https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202402216789592

Spec wise, it seems quite decent - can't think of anything missing really.

Has anyone got any experience of variable damper control? Worth having?

Other car I've looked at is: https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202312064608179

They've had it up a long time and have reduced it quite a bit, from 16k+

Again, seems good spec but not overly keen on black as a colour. The petrol appeals to me more.

Going to have a look at this one this weekend, as it's quite a bit closer to me: https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202401285992710

I am not sure why you'd consider both of those cars - if you need the diesel then the petrol one is out of the question and if you don't need a diesel I don't see why you'd want a 4 cylinder diesel in a car like this.

If you're not bothered about performance - which it seems you're not as the diesel is an option - then why not look at the 1.5 litre petrol instead of the more expensive to run and buy Cooper S?

I'm mostly indifferent to the engine. I don't need either a petrol or diesel. I don't do a lot of driving in the car it'll be replacing, but when I do it's generally a long journey (50 miles+). For example, it's doing a 1500 mile journey this summer.

Spec is more important, and all 3 cars have the minimum spec I'm looking for.

HP not so important, but torque is. I've yet to try the 1.5L, but on paper it doesn't have enough torque.

The diesel for me is a wildcard at the moment. I'm confident I like the 2L petrol, but unsure on the diesel, hence why I posted a question about it.

As previously mentioned, spec is most important, and I haven't found a 1.5L with the spec I'm looking for. By all means, I'd definitely look at one, but I've yet to see one in budget with the spec I'm looking for.

I just don't think it's that great to drive with a 2 litre 4 cylinder diesel in it, so therefore I'd ignore them and get the petrol one.

Also, as it's a 2016 it may have the older navigation system which doesn't support things like Car Play or Realtime Traffic Information - I cannot remember when that changed, so its worth checking.

2017, but you're able to upgrade from ID4 to 5 (unofficially), which is what gives you CarPlay. I don't care for realtime traffic as I won't ever be using the inbuilt satnav

I haven't driven the diesel yet, hence why I wanted opinions on it. I personally like how a diesel drives for every day stuff - the torque is great for mooching about and being lazy in a manual. Also, before you say it, I don't find autos lazy. I find them intrusive and annoying. Torque converters especially are horrific for never knowing whether to change down a gear or stay where you are - I want control over the gear I'm in without the stupid paddles and inability to bulk change gear.

I don't think indifferent means what you think it does :D

Please explain

I’d avoid the diesels I don’t think it will be long until they start with the idea of banning all diesel cars in low emissions/congestion zones. While it might not directly affect a lot of drivers it would make the values drop.

The petrol models are all pretty good on fuel and with petrol being cheaper I’d expect there to be a small difference in fuel costs overall between diesel and petrol.

This was my main concern. That being said, I do have another car, so wouldn’t have been a major issue.

Main thing was that the Diesel seemed to be really well specced, having options I haven’t seen since I’ve been looking. E.g. VDC (electrically adjustable damper settings)

The private one in grey you’ve linked to looks the best be it the seats could have some wear.

Can’t imagine fuel economy is going to be great for shorter trips with it being the All4 and the 2L turbo.

My friend has a manual JCW Clubman that does a fair amount of short trips and his long term average is 31-32mpg. It does low to mid 40s on a run the auto should be better than this as it has a tailer top gear.

What makes you say it’s the best?

But yes agree with the fuel economy side of things. Going to check that tomorrow
Preference on colour. Private dealer sale detracts rather than adds imo.

Think I posted before my friend had a clubman cooper S and they were getting low 30s also.

Personally I’d be going for a much newer facelift car in exclusive trim (possibly get some options ontop) with the 1.5 petrol and the auto box, however appreciate that isn’t what you think you want. It seems a lot of money on a 7 year old car.

I’ve not spent a lot of time looking but something like this (which is the cooper S):
