Who here owns a Renaultsport?

Just read the whole thread and get the general idea between em all now.

Quite a lot to look out for when buying one but I guess thats the same on most cars. Seems I can get these for <3.6k now though quite easily which seems like a steal.

Only downside is im useless when checking out new cars which is part of the reason i havent got a new one cos id proberly end up being robbed :(

where is he from?

It looks like for my price range it will be a 01 plate Phase I

Maybe 02 like the above.
Trouble is im so lazy I cant be arsed to go view it and deal with sorting insurance and that out I just want one to magically appear on my drive.

You need to find a good, well looked after one as parts can be costly to replace and servicing is expensive.

A cambelt change your looking at £400+.
A standard service with filters / oils etc are around £160 from a specialist.

Had my 04 182 for 2 years now got it on 40k miles its now just gone over 60, mechanically its been sound but I've had a fair few electrical problems to date.

Failed Heater Motor.
Failed ESP/Cruise control switch.
Both central locking motors failed on each door.
2x Lamba sensors failed.
Head Light Washer jet motor failed.
Head light amp failed.

It also suffered from start issues for a long long time which I've only recnetly tracked down to the conector into the starter motor which has come apart.

That last one is stupid cheap, must be something wrong with it for that. Although the write up doesn't sound like the usual scam, could be a Cat C/D or something?

The first one sounds genuine enough, the 2nd one I'd want to check the service history on (i.e. check it's had belts done when due etc).

2 of them have sold now but appears to be loads on Autotrader now!

Few yellow ones avail as well! Trouble is now I got to try and narrow them all down will try and go and see a few this weekend cos im kinda desperate to get a car now.

Any advantages picking a car from trade to private? Plenty on trade, only gripe with Autotrader is doesnt tell you half the stuff you need like Pistonheads.

lol in response that one going really cheap I thought id just email to ask why its valued a lot less then the others and I get this in reply

"have worked in UK for the last 2 years and I've purchased the car there. My company wanted me back home, so currently I'm in Rome, Italy. I've bring the car home with me. I decided that is better to sell it because I don `t use it anymore (the wheel is on right side and is very difficult for me to drive it in Italy) and it `s a pitty to keep such a car and not to use it.
I realize that is a cheap price for such a car but my special situation makes me do things that I wouldn't do in normal Circumstances.
The price I am looking for my car is £2,200 including the shipping costs, insurance and handling(delivery to EUROPE).
You will not have to pay additional taxes for this." SCAM MUCH?!?1

Have found another one though here http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/www/cars/RENAULT+CLIO/Ne-2-4-5-6-7-8-27-44-49-53-61-64-67-103-133-146-236,N-18-41-240-4294966970-4294967142/advert.action?R=200838318986815&distance=24&postcode=SN5+5PS&channel=CARS&make=RENAULT&model=CLIO&min_pr=&max_pr=4000&max_mileage=60000 Not far from me either just spoke to the guy and he said the belts havent been changed but they arent due to around 70k anyway?? If I read correctly than renault lowered the milage it needed doing?

Hi again Rich,

The link youve posted above the car is long overdue a belt change. It should be done every 5 years or 72k...which every comes first!!!

So its 12months over due. You could use this as a haggling point although you just need to pray it doesnt snap on your journey home after buying the car (thats so something that would happen to me) lol.
The car also has a god damn awful cheese grater grill on which i would have to change straight away (probs about £100 for the upper and lower genuine grill)

Also the car appears to have an aftermarket exhaust, looks to me like a magnex oval exhaust...again in my opinion they look awful although cant tell from the pics. I test drove one with a magnex oval exhaust and in traffic it gave me a headache but thats just personal opinion there.

I would personally try to avoid anything that has silly mods done to it, like the aforementioned cheese-grater grill.

Aftermarket parts do tend to go hand in hand with these cars, so there are a few things I'd tolerate. For instance, as previously mentioned the exhausts tend to rot or fall off - so an aftermarket one is fine a lot of the time. Just no baked bean cans ;)

But max-power grill's and Lexarse lights are avoid IMO ;)

Good mods to have on a 172 -
Uprated brakes (as long as they arent cheap ebay grooved specials)
Braided brake lines
Subtle exhaust cut into bumper...looks almost oem style
Professional remap from a Renault tuner to help cure flat spots etc

Also a good indication on the type of previous owner....what tyres are on the car, are they matching? (at least same brand on the front, same on the rear) are they a quality brand?

You'll often find if they have cheap tyres on the previous owner also skimped and scraped on other essential parts of the car.
